How are these so popular? Seems weird

I don’t have a commute though so maybe that’s why

I don't get it either. I don't subscribe to spotify or any of that other bullshit and I don't have a commute anymore. Last time I had more than a 10 minute drive I was listening to DJ Gonzo on WKNC. Good times.

That's your problem, man. You don't have a commute.
My commute is around 40 minutes each way, so I regularly listen to podcasts. Also, I regularly spend 3-4 hours at a time behind the wheel for work trips. Having something to keep you from getting bored out of your mind is crucial.
1) Regular dial radio wears out quick
2) Stored playlists get redundant
3) Pandora sucks ass

Pardon my Take and True Crime are my regular podcasts.

Personally i enjoy listening to music over listening to (mostly) white people talk.

For real. Where do they find the hosts for these things? Annoying-White-People-R-Us?! I commute, but would typically rather make phone calls or space out to my muzaks.

I don't drive or have any other time where Im not actively listening to actual live speach or music. It's also stupid that pod was retained in the name.

I’ll listen to them in place of listening to the radio or music…if I’m driving or just doing work around the house.

I (still) have an iPod in my car that I literally have 1,000s and 1,000s of songs on, and I regularly update it with new music, so I always have music that I want to listen to.

But with that said, we do listen to Podcasts on trips sometimes. Mostly interviews with Mark Marion, Dax Shephard, and NPR podcasts, mostly about music and musicians (there's one really neat one where they break-down specific songs, get into the whole song structure and arrangement, I can't remember the name)

I've gotten into one or two podcasts (mostly historical), but I'm an infrequent listener. My commute is barely ten minutes and I ride in with my wife, so we are usually talking and have some music on in the background. I primarily will listen on a long road trip, like when I go to Asheville for work on my own, or ride down to Charlotte. I killed a bunch of episodes this past summer when we did a two week road trip to the northeast. I normally like just listening to music, but I personally feel that my brain is more engaged and stimulated with a discussion going on, so long drives are the perfect time to listen to either an audiobook or a podcast and stay more alert behind the wheel.

People who listen to podcasts kinda remind me of people who back-in park. Not the same kind of people, but just have an "I'm better than you" air about them.

Yeah I don’t follow. It’s not really any different than listening to a radio show, or music, or an audiobook. Do people throw it in your face…like, “I’m more informed than you because I listen to a podcasts”?

the people who brag about listening to NPR are clearly the holier-than-thou element of the radio listening audience

Strong Songs was the podcast I was trying to think of earlier. Some of the songs the guy analyzes include Radiohead's Paranoid Android, Michael Jackson's Thriller, and the entire Talking Head's Stop Making Sense album. I find it very neat: https://strongsongspodcast.com/

Recently been listening to some SmartLess hosted by Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes. Heard them interview Bob Odenkirk, Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood, Eddie Vedder, David Byrne and Johnny Knoxville: https://www.smartless.com/

I can't focus for shit on podcasts (also, I have a 7-minute commute.)

Audiobooks are hard for me too. Finally cancelled my Audible cause I just wasn't using it.

But I can listen to old-time radio for hours at a time.

(Yeah, I only listen to them on longer trips. Alternate between them and my music.... and sometimes some NPR)

I can't really listen to weekend NPR anymore... it's not really a narrative thing as much as a voice and tone issue.

Everything just sounds like "Variations On An Ira Glass" to me, no mater a/s/l.

And I'm left, I feel like I'm progressive, I'm savvy... but the liberal snark on "Wait Wait" really burned me out sometime around the early 10's.

I only drive to work an average of 1-2 times a week now, but I can't stand NPR anymore, either. All the begging for donations and fear porn just depresses the fuck out of me. On top of that, the average caller is some batshit boomer shrieking about the most absurd left or right wing talking points while the hosts just cringe and stammer trying to get them off the line without provoking a bomb threat.

Sports talk radio is noticeably worse as well, so I either just drive in silence or put on a playlist of my favorite songs and pretend the world hasn't gone to complete shit.

I often listen to snippets of NPR at all different times during the day. But none of the shows I listen to have callers. What show are you listening to that have callers? (And yeah, I never could really get into any of the weekend shows like Wait, Wait Don't tell me, Praire Home Companion or Car Talk... which of course did have callers)

Well, the local station KQED I catch from time to time for news updates (an NPR affiliate/member station?) has shows where people call in during the times I'm commuting. I guess I'm using NPR as a catch all term for public radio, as opposed to the actual NPR shows (World Have Your Say, Fresh Air, All Things Considered, etc)?

Do any of you use TuneIn?

https://tunein.com/

I'm still a big fan of terrestrial radio. I have a need to hear live dj's playing song/curating music and to know that I'm having a collaborative experience with people listening to the same thing at the same time.

It's really nice to have all those stations in one place; everything from freeform KEXP in Seattle, to Jazz/Blues on WWOZ in New Orleans to a pretty rad Lofi station in Paris called Chillsky radio.

More often than not, if I'm not listening to Spotify, I'm listening to a live radio station via TuneIn.

There are still terrestrial radio stations where the playlists are decided by the DJ and not from some corporate higher ups???
