One of my favorite indie game devs is selling a collection of 155 paintings from a game they released in 2013. This is actually pretty interesting because the paintings are unique in game and only one person can own each at a time. But you can steal them, since it's a game about stealing.

I helped him test out some stuff on OpenSea. It appears that even after you buy a piece, the original seller can modify the art. I'm really struggling to understand the value proposition here besides proof of ownership. But proof of ownership of WHAT? It's a fucking integer. The integer isn't even unique, only unique among a particular smart contract. This is wild.

In the high art world there have been cases where someone pays $120k for a garbage piece of art and gets the garbage art plus drugs. Easy way to do the same thing with NFTs.

Some good stuff here about NFTs. At last job I worked on a music tech stack. Some of the music execs were real interested in NFTs for licensing like mentioned above.

Lots of weird rights resolution that is mega complicated: joint roller in the studio gets 0.5% of streaming, cousin gets 1%, band members ex girlfriends mom gets 1% of radio play in Norway. Shit like that.

How do you have it? Is that a literal copy or just a picture/downsampled copy?

Seems like maybe this would make sense if you used actually unique videos (for example go to the basketball players directly), then build a video player that requires connection to the blockchain to properly decrypt the videos/images for playback

Beeple or the owner of the JPG cryptographically signs that you now own it. Then it's recorded on the blockchain as long as you own the wallet (private key). Kind of like a deed, but with cryptography and the underlying asset is digital.

The NFT as a trading card makes no sense, because the useful data is referenced in a completely arbitrary way, where as a playing card is physical thing.

One interesting thing i did see about NFTs is that if you resell the NFT, they can be structured that some portion of the price you resell it for gets routed back to the original artist. Since it's a "smart contract", this is basically an automated process. And the NFT broker always gets a cut too.
