It's just hard for me to appreciate Avatar, it had a very cookie cutter story and the acting was just okay. It felt more like a tech demo than an actual good movie. I only saw it on DVD and not on IMAX, so maybe that was part of the issue? They story was literally just Fern Gully/Dances with Wolves.

Avatar's story is the most basic cookie cutter imaginable relying on tropes. Remove the "first film in 3D" and that movie was a lot of nothing.

Anyway, pretty ambitious to have this many Avatar sequels planned when the second one hasn't even been made yet. Yes the first one was a commercial success (which I guess is all that matters when it comes to sequels) but was otherwise meh.

Well what I was getting at is that what if it flops? It likely won't just because it has James Cameron's name on it but planning that many sequels with this young cast looks like it is trying to be a sci-fi/nature version of Harry Potter where the second movie came out like 11 years later.

Who from the original movie is planned to be in it?

No one claims waterworld is a cinema masterpiece, therefore it's not overhyped. I literally just saw a list that put matrix as the second best sci-fi movie of like the last 30 some years. That's insane. A movie that has terrible performances by every actor, a plot that has more holes than plot and a story premise that is a blatant ripoff of earlier films is not an all-time great film

For the record I enjoy waterworld despite its faults. The extended version is much, much better than the theatrical one. Also Waterworld is a fucking beautiful piece of cinematography even if you don't like the story or Costner's acting. It's not on anyone's all-time best list, but it doesn't deserve the maybe shits that have been taken on it.

I'm not quite sure what that has to do with anything. Just because it's expensive, doesn't mean people were looking forward to it or remember it fondly. It tanked at the box office, the production of it was made fun of for going over budget/running late/the director quitting leading up to the release, the reviews were shitty.

No one was chomping at the bit to see it when it came out and it didn't really get a cult following afterwards. If you're not doing either of those things, you can't be overhyped

In the early 90s when it was being filmed and marketed, it was being hyped up pretty widely, for the star power, the budget, etc. I don't know of anyone in the last 20+ years that has hyped it up, but at the time, it was a pretty big deal.

The leading Avatar couple, the female scientist, the greedy white guy, and of course, James Cameron.

Pluse, Kate Winslet, Vin Diesel and Michelle Yeoh. So it's a much stronger cast.

The 2nd HP came only a yr after the 1st one. This series has potential to become the Star Wars of the 21st century, or the Terminator series.

I don't know if the Terminator series is something you want to compare it to. The first two Terminator movies were some of the best movies in their respective genres but everything after T2 is pretty awful. As for Star Wars, there is absolutely no way the Avatar series will ever reach the same level of popularity.

T3 and the latest T6 are still solid, at least for me. And Cameron will make two more Ts. So he's gonna be back and take it over again. Also you can't guarantee the new Avatars are not awful either.

Have you ever been to Disney World in Orlando? In Animal Kingdom, they have built a themed area inspired by the film called Pandora – The World of Avatar. It's as popular as Star Wars themed area in Hollywood Studios.
