Nah, I didn't see that man. Honestly, DC was live today. There were protests in front of the White House (Lafayette Square, where I was), U Street, Logan Circle, Lincoln Memorial (national Mall area), and Capitol Hill.

The helpers were out. There were street medics helping to cart people away who got gassed. There were people giving out free snacks, water, masks, and hand sanitizer. The city blocked off the streets.

I was very proud of my city today.

I was down there Saturday as well. Lots of different groups marching, speaking, joining each other. It was...fine. Honestly - and I know that as a white guy I'm not supposed to criticize protest methods - I found parts of it to have too much of a party atmosphere. DJ's playing dumb dance songs like you'd hear at a wedding reception and shit; I think for some, it was as much a celebration of being out in public with strangers as it was an expression of frustration, sadness, and anger.

Other parts, though, were more what I expected. Some excellent speakers with good messages. And I don't care what that asshole said about "smaller than expected," that crowd looked enormous enough to me.

Otherwise, concur with all EMCE said. City did a good job, and lots of volunteers handing out things ranging from mini water bottles to pizza and sandwiches.

I'm not going to deny this. It absolutely happened. I would just like to note ( as a native Washitionian) much of this is DC culture. While some might see it as performative, DC culture dictates that as much as you might protest, it is a necessity to break out some go-go music and dance. People like to get together and do a block party. Political fights aside, DC will always party. Always.

OK, looking at the scale of destruction of and violence, this was objectively way lower on the scale than the summer protests and riots.

But, looking at it quantitatively is myopic. We need to look at it qualitatively as well: what exactly happened yesterday that was different and more dangerous to the fabric of the Constitution and democratic institutions relative to the summer events?

Just think about this: If anti-Trump protestors stormed (or tried to) the Capitol, what would the response have been? I mean, if they had announced it in advance and it was known they would, like it was known about yesterday, fully armed riot police and paramilitary personnel would already have been on the ground and thwarted any attempt at a breach of the Capitol, let alone letting them roam inside taking selfies with the cops and breaking into offices of lawmakers and tweeting while sitting on their desks making seditious and treasonous demands.

Is it really that easy to storm the US seat of Government?

What happened yesterday was arguably the biggest white-privilege moment in US history.
