I keep hearing these things aren't profitable.

I know when I order Postmates they charge me a 20%+ service fee (after the $85/year I pay them for "free" delivery)

Now I hear they're taking up to 30% from the restaurants too?

And somehow they can't make a profit?

My experience has been shit the couple of times I've used Uber Eats and GrubHub.

I don't really get the whole food delivery thing.

There is something to be said about pushing a button and having anything you wanted appear at your door. You are free of all the risk associated with going out in public and save all that time to do whatever you were doing at home.

Being able to get any item delivered on demand is a luxury that used to only be available to the wealthy. Postmates uses the bike courier logo because bike couriers is what it was modeled after.

Postmates stands out from the other apps because you can order from restaurants and stores who aren't even fully participating. You just tell the app what you want and the driver orders it, pays for it with a postmates card, and then postmates charges you. You can order from liquor stores, smoke shops, and other retail. They are competing with amazon as well as the food-only apps. Postmates is much quicker than amazon same-day.

I know a family of 5 who postmated everything and spent over 100k in a year on postmates. They never ate meals together and each person just postmated whenever they got hungry. The little girl had a problem with her macbook pro and just postmated a new one. Crazy stuff but it was good for them because they were able to limit public exposure and keep the kids from wandering around the city unattended. Kids under 16 are not supposed to take ubers anyway so they are kind've "stuck" in the house.

Postmates is catered towards clientele from a wealthier demographic than the non-caviar food-only delivery apps. Generally, people who don't have the time or paitence to pick up their own shit or just don't want to risk going out in public.

This might be why postmates has made profit

The experience is not just on the app but has a lot to do with the restaurant's integration and use of the app. Some restaurants just don't get it. Also, if you order from a busy restaurant at a busy time (like dinner rush) then you are asking for a terrible experience. For the best experience, I would try to order from places that are close to your home and order lunch before 11 or dinner before 6.

If you go to a restaurant you are spending time and gas on the drive there, possibly paying for parking/valet, and paying a high premium for drinks on top of the 20% service fee you are paying anyway.

This makes it a no-brainer for a lot of people who'd rather be at home anyway. They are driving leads for restaurants by connecting them to delivery customers who wouldn't otherwise have access to their food. Everybody wins.

Exactly. These delivery apps are for people with fuck you money. Middle class people with good fiscal responsibility should not be using them.
