Turned off the water at the street to have plumbing work done in upstairs I an above/below duplex. Today the city comes by without notice and turns the water to the unit back on. This floods the upstairs And water is leaking from the light fixtures down stairs. Do I have any legal recourse?

What does your municipality say about control of the valves at the meter? I know in Raleigh technically you're not allowed to use those valves, they can give you a hefty fine for turning off the water at the meter (even on your side).

In the future if a valve has to remain off tag it lock it closed

this is oxford,nc . i guess i would have to call and talk to them to find out. thing is the home was built in 1945 so there is no shut off other than at the street. I just don't understand why they would see a valve turned off for a unit with water service and turn it on.

Is this meter shared between both halves of the duplex? If so, was the other tenant aware that you shut the valve to perform repairs?

Make sure to add a whole house shutoff.
