Fuck man, in the humanities his career would be toast. It’s all gonna come down to how valuable he is to the school / grant funding he brings in, etc. unfortunately. Granted, it may have been a joke but super inappropriate and he should have known better and at least apologized when he realized it offended people but he seemed to just double down.

He's one of 6 PIs on a long running grant that brings in around $700,000 per year. He's not the lead. It looks to be funding for a pretty big multi-scientist lab.

Other than that, he's had a non-funded proposal he submitted in late 2017 and a proposal pending since June of last year, but it's only for ~$90,000.

So he's not a cash cow for the university.

But if he had said men are useless after two guys didn't answer the question, then I'm sure the women who posted wouldn't have been as outraged. When I'm considering "jokes" and what to do and how to manage the situation, I try to evaluate if the alternative would have happened would I still have been outraged.

I don't think the professor is a misogynist. I mean, he definitely has some biases about women and likely wouldn't have said that about the guys, but I don't see this as fireable on discrimination grounds.

This is overly simplistic. If this is a physics class there’s a problem with women in the sciences in our country. It’s partially because the atmosphere is often misogynistic. Even very minimal misogyny over time builds up.

There’s other scenarios where maybe these comments wouldn’t be such a big deal, but this isn’t one of them.
