Disagree there. It's hard to support that the first film in a series that's entirely new, as opposed to something built of existing comic books, etc., is specifically for the toys.

I could maybe toy sales being a strong incentive for 5 and 6 since Star Wars toys were aggressively popular, but even that would be a hard argument for toys before plot.

I'm open to any evidence, though.

Fine, 4 wasn't made specifically to sell toys. But there's a reason why George Lucas made sure he kept all the merchandising rights.

And ewoks exist solely to sell toys.

Selling toys and merchandise is definitely a big part of Star Wars, but it's more of just milking more money out of people than the #1 focus of making the movies.

Exactly. The only reason 5 and 6 were able to be funded were because of toy and merchandise sales. That's not the same as those movies being made just to sell toys.

100% agree on the Ewoks. I feel like I saw a special years back that showed they did marketing research on them before creating them. So there is a lot of credibility there.

But back on track...

Are we thinking this movie takes us back to canon, with there being two children of Leia and Han? Ben told Rey that her parents were nobodies but I'm not sure if he was just lying to fuck with her. She and Ben definitely have some sort of connection.

It would be kinda weird if they were. In Ep 7 when Han and Leia were reunited. She was like "You gotta go talk to our son. He needs you." You'd think she'd be like "I see you have this girl with you that is the exact same age as our daughter that we left on Jakku and there is a physical resemblance. And she's really strong with the force like everyone in my family is. Anyway, while you were just on Jakku, right? Don't suppose you happened to run into our kid?"

Don't want to jump too far back on this one, but the Netflix series "The Toys that Made Us" covers this pretty well. Up to this point, movies didn't really sell toys, cartoons/TV did. Lucas kept the merchandising rights because no one wanted to buy them. Star Wars was one of the first movies to show merchandising was viable. (Assuming I remember correctly...)

Rey goes back in time and becomes the matriarch of the Skywalker family (Rise of Skywalker because she literally raises them). Star Wars 9 becomes a remake of Terminator 1.
