"A New Jersey couple and a homeless veteran caught in an acrimonious battle over more than $400,000 in donations to a GoFundMe fundraiser have been charged with second degree felonies for allegedly fabricating the story that got them the money in the first place.

"The entire campaign was predicated on a lie," Burlington County Prosecutor Scott Coffina said at a news conference on Thursday.

The couple, Katelyn McClure and Mark D'Amico, and Johnny Bobbitt Jr. have been charged with second degree theft by deception and conspiracy to commit theft by deception, Coffina said.

...

"Ok, so wait. The gas part is completely made up but the guy isn't," McClure allegedly texted. "I had to make something up to make people feel bad. So shush about the made up stuff.""

I'm trying to figure out the felony part... They told people they met this guy and it was a lie. So... they go to jail? I'm just not seeing it. The homeless guy on the street tells me he needs gas money all the time. I don't press charges against him for it.

they did meet him, actually, i think.

but the felony is the lie used to collect money from the public.

i kind of don't think the people should be refunded. if you are giving thousands of dollars to some homeless dude on gofundme, you're probably financially secure enough to take an L here and there.

#BelieveHer amIrite?

Sounds like she wants an out. She was cool with it when she was going on trips, driving a BMW, and getting multiple handbags costing nearly a grand each. Now she's ready to pin it all on hubby and send him up the river. They are both shitty people and it sounds like they deserve each other.
