in 2011 we started getting a bunch of user registrations that looked pretty sketch. mostly just typical porn/pharmaceutical type links in the homepage or user bio fields. most of them coming from russian email addresses. at that time, when users registered the account was created immediately and for non-ncsu.edu emails it would just sit there until they paid to activate the account. well, all those spam accounts were getting created, and even though they couldn't be logged into, it was still filling up the user table for no good reason and showing them on the new users section of /user.aspx which at the time was still being paid attention to by folks around here. since then, there have been about 60,000 fake user accounts created.

I really like how so much of the student body is well over the 18-22 age range we typically associate with college students. Good for those people for going back to get their educations.
