These types of situations are going to keep happening because it is tough for one party to get 60 seats in the Senate. Our politicians are too busy playing Republicans vs Democrats. There isn't enough time to take a timeout and compromise.

DACA and CHIP each have extremely high public support, even among republicans... But sure. Pet issues
1/20/2018 5:00:10 PM
^^ Is that comparison even applicable to this situation? Republicans in Congress have been sitting on CHIP for months, and there's a bipartisan DACA fix that would pass if brought to a vote.
1/20/2018 5:08:24 PM
I just want 1 sitting Senator or Congressman to say "Yup, we blew it and we owe our constituents better."
1/21/2018 9:44:27 AM
^I've seen some say things like that. "We have to do better" "we owe to the American public" blah blah blah.Problem is more the action than the words. They all say a lot of right things, but the actions are always in the order of self-money-party-self-self-re-election-money-self-troops-self-party-America.

I'm furloughed. Really great timing. Not as though I'm trying to pay for a wedding or just bought honeymoon tickets or just had to get two surprise flights to LA or anything. It has been interesting, hearing from people around Washington how different this shutdown is from the last one. Last time, it was Executive vs. Legislative, so Obama made a big show of shutting everything down - national parks and whatnot. This time, since the same party controls everything, they're working real hard to soften the blow, at least in terms of optics - national parks staying open, etc. It tells me that the Republicans rightly expect the blame to land on them. If they thought all the shit was going to stick to the Democrats, they'd be throwing around a lot more shit.
1/21/2018 6:32:04 PM
why does this shit just sneak up on us out of the blue every damn time. It seems like a surprise...
1/21/2018 7:48:32 PM
^It probably makes it easier for at least one party to get what they want because they can't sit around forever once this happens. Honestly, the best fix would probably be to let people protected under DACA stay under the condition that the government is allowed to get way tougher on immigration than ever before. That would include building a wall and increasing security along the border. I'm guessing the Democrats won't go for that though. At some point we have to do more than grant amnesty to people from shithole nations once every 30 years. I know there lives suck, but it isn't our duty to save the world. They'll just have to do a better job hiding from gangs and terrorist in their own nations to prevent being murdered.
1/21/2018 8:25:05 PM
^ that’s completely wrong and idiotic. The pedigree of America, the reason it exists, is that otherwise poor and desperate People motivated to leave their homelands we’re seeking a better life. “I had always hoped that this land might become a safe and agreeable asylum to the virtuous and persecuted part of mankind, to whatever nation they might belong.”- George Washington“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” - Emma Lazarus“you can go to live in France, but you can’t become a Frenchman. You can go to live in Germany or Italy, but you can’t become a German, an Italian. He went through Turkey, Greece, Japan and other countries. But he said anyone, from any corner of the world, can come to live in the United States and become an American.”-Ronald Reagan

Trump is a white supremacist, his ideal line is 0 brown immigrants. His views on immigration are wildly out of step with the majority of American's by a huge margin, and they are nearly completely antithetical to what American has long stood for.

The Dems will give in, McConnell will lie and go back on his promise and then the Dems will give in again and give Trump more than he initially even asked for in exchange for DACA on March 2.This much is obvious.[Edited on January 22, 2018 at 10:38 AM. 1/22/2018 10:36:36 AM
Gutless pieces of shit are about to give Trump a huge win without getting ANY guarantees. Even if McConnell allowing a vote on DACA, without assurances from Paul Ryan what good is it?Democrats suck.
1/22/2018 11:53:40 AM
what are your #sources?
1/22/2018 12:09:19 PM
My Bloomberg and the TV above my desk.
1/22/2018 12:09:50 PM
Of course McConnell isn't going to simply bring that for a vote. The best language I've seen from him is that he "hopes" DACA will come up, as if he doesn't hold that power
1/22/2018 12:13:19 PM
I'm not really sure what people expected Democrats to get out of this. Paul Ryan was never going to break the pedophile rule and bring DACA to a vote in the House. Those folks have already embraced Trump, embraced the most extreme wing of the party. The Democrats were never going to get DACA. These Republicans were never going to cave on illegal immigration for ending the shutdown. We're talking about a group of people that want to reduce legal immigration by 40%. Their first action on immigration after taking power was literally detaining people with legal status at airports. Their position is deport all 11 million illegal immigrants, build a wall behind them, and then change the laws so it's impossible for them to ever come back. There's no winning as long as they control the government. This is no different than Ted Cruz trying to force Obama and Reid to repeal Obamacare by shutting down the government, that was never going to happen either. Hell, the Republicans at least had a majority in one of the chambers when that went down. DACA was dead the moment Trump signed that order, there is literally nothing the Democrats can do about it now. This is why elections matter.

1/22/2018 12:22:07 PM
Everyone pays some price during a shutdown. If they didn't than why are any Rs even talking to the Ds instead of just going to play golf and saying, "let us know when you're ready to open back up"most republicans care about opening the government back up, and since they need democrat votes to do that, there is an opportunity (yes, a small one) to get something on of those votes. What exactly is your idea of an alternative?
1/22/2018 12:23:00 PM
What did they get?Verbal assurances from a proven liar that don’t matter anyway because Ryan won’t bring a vote without the awful Freedom Caucus being on board? They got straight up played.[Edited on January 22, 2018 at 12:27 PM. Reason : at least everyone sees how feckless Trump is.]
1/22/2018 12:27:05 PM
I'm not sure a DACA bill could ever be negotiated regardless of how clean the bill is, or wall funding, or who gets what concessions etc. There is a significant group of the GOP that is only interested in inflicting pain on immigrants. Their base demands it, and the rest of the GOP refuses to move forward unless every neo-confederate in the house agrees to the bill. We may have to accept that they simply won't allow any movement here. What is frustrating is they're too big of cowards to come out and say "Fuck Dreamers." Instead they feign interest in some bills and negotiations, claim they eventually want to do something on this issue, but deep down know they'd never agree to anything.[Edited on January 22, 2018 at 12:29 PM. 1/22/2018 1:00:24 PM
it's pretty amazing
1/22/2018 1:04:52 PM
Now Ted Cruz is trolling and saying he would never support a shutdown.Nothing matters.
1/22/2018 1:37:31 PM
I think the only maneuver here is to ramp up DACA "negotiations" between now and February. A good bit of the GOP, including the president, can't talk about immigration without dropping comments like "shithole countries," "cantaloupe-calf drug runners," "AMNESTY!!!!! AHHHHH," etc etc etc. So I think it's in the Dems best interest to bring the subject up incessantly, as well as reminding everyone they agreed to come up with a solution. At some point, hopefully right after Tom Cotton screams "FUCK MEXICANS" into a news camera, it'll become clear to the public that one side isn't interested in solutions.
1/22/2018 1:53:07 PM
no it won't, the people who would mind comments like that already know what's upthey had a deal before, if they can keep it from becoming too much of a political football they will make a deal again
1/22/2018 2:20:26 PM
By deal do you mean Graham-Durbin? Trump already has spokesmen on CNN flatly saying he won't sign it, Tom Cotton, Steve King, and the rest of the Klan are already pushing out "AMNESTY AGHHHHHHHH" talking points on twitter and I'm sure will be on Fox Mews within the hour. The deal is already toast, I think it's fair to question if it was ever a deal to begin with, or even a good faith negotiation for that matter.[Edited on January 22, 2018 at 2:44 PM. Reason : As the minority, only thing left to do is try and make hay off how racist the GOP is.]
