I disagree, but it does take a certain sense of humor to appreciate it

I thought it was "meh". But now I'm having a hard time remembering it.

there were parts that were very darkly sarcastic and satirical and over-the-top ridiculous, and several characters and situations and concepts that are very indicative of the military mentality. I think they can be especially appreciated by someone who served in the military.

the characters are also pretty memorable and funny, and Yossarian's character arc is actually pretty interesting.

I admit it can be a slog to read though, and the non-chronological order can be a bit confusing

I think Catch-22 is highly overrated but to me the worst book called a classic is Catcher in the Rye

I agree about Catcher in the Rye.

I really enjoyed Catch 22. Just read it last year for the first time. Checked it out from the library but want to buy a copy as soon as I get off my butt and do it. I'll second what red baron said about military experience probably helps understand all the nuances of the book.

I enjoyed Catch 22, but I'll take two tickets for the "'Catcher in the Rye' Sucked" train. I read it and I understand why so many lunatics and serial killers said it was their favorite book. I wanted to kill people, too, after I read it. Specifically J. D. Salinger and the teacher that assigned it.

Things Fall Apart actually does a really good job capturing the culture and the relevant issues, but if you don't care about those things, you're not going to like it. I didn't like it either, when it was assigned to me in high school, because it was one of about fifty "white men are bad" books that I had to read that year and I was getting pretty sick of it.

Catcher in the Rye was wayyyy better than Catch-22

The "worst" classic book I was assigned in high school was probably the Scarlet Letter. Moby Dick was awful too.

So much talk about palm oil and yams.

My most hated book is rather similar to Things Fall Apart is The Good Earth. I hate hate hate hate hate, The Good Earth.

And Holden Caulfield is just a whiny little bitch to anyone who has any real perspective on actual problems people have in the world.

I did not like Things Fall Apart.

And Holden Caufield was a whinny little bitch. Maybe I missed the point, and its been a while, but---hes fails out of prep school, hangs out in NYC for a while, gets beat up by a hooker and pimp, tries to run away but his little sister says not to, they go to central park.

The Outsiders---which I didnt read till waaaaay after school as an adult and never realized was written by a 17 year old girl---was actually really good. Stay gold Ponyboy

I got called a racist by my 11th grade english teacher because I said that book was awful ...

why would anyone like a book where the main character tries to shoot his wife in the back with a shotgun because she tries to run from abuse?

that book was fucking miserable

Catch 22 is an amazing book. Right up there with 1984, catcher, and animal farm. You guys are nuts

I loved Catcher in the Rye, but mainly because I identified so strongly with Holden. So Ima go out on a limb and say that if you like this book, you're a whiny little bitch.

I don't think anyone was personally insulted I was just trying to clarify Holden's appeal. Perhaps you only like him if you resemble him somewhat.

I relate to the character Sheriff Bell in "no country for old men"

the book, not the movie. the book is superior in every way and the movie misses the point of the book completely

I had to read The Awakening in high school. That book about bored me to death. That's the worst "classic" book I can think of.
