if having a terrible lead singer makes you better, then Rush is obviously the best.

but it's Zep

Stones are the best hands down.

But vinylbandit will show up and say the stooges. Which is also correct.

Y'all don't even get it. You can say Zep, the Stones, the Stooges, whatever you want, like a bunch of children who glimpse a woman's curves but don't--and cannot--know her mysteries. I'll invoke the spirit of vinylbandit and hip you to the fact of the thing:

IT'S FUCKING AC/DC

What are we basing our criteria on? Personal preference? Records sold? Single best selling record? Doesn't the latter still go to the Eagles? I think the most records sold goes to the Beatles, but like someone else said I don't consider them rock. Next up by the numbers is Led Zeppelin.

But then you've got to figure, those guys have had what, 50 years to sell records. Metallica is still selling records, but any new releases - how are "units" defined these days? In 1968, you had to purchase an entire album, which had anywhere from 10 to 15 songs on it. Now, you just buy the songs you like, so you're not buying the entire album. How does the recording industry accommodate for that with modern bands?

Although let's be honest with ourselves. We haven't had a real rock band emerge since the early 90's.

The Beatles are a great band for people who don't actually like rock and roll. The Beatles are to rock and roll as the Black Eyed Peas are to hip-hop.

They were THE pop artists of their time, what do you expect me to say? If they came out today, they'd be played on g105. There isn't much on g105 I consider rock. And I'm sure by musical definition their considered rock, but they aren't the first band that comes to mind when someone asks me what rock bands I like.

Ehh, mid-90s, with the Foo Fighters, Weezer, or maybe Sublime if you count their major-label debut, which dropped after the band no longer existed.

I mean, I guess you could go later than that with, like, Buckcherry, or the Black Keys, or the Killers...or shit like 3rd Eye Blind or Shinedown or Staind.

But yeah...I can't think of anyone with real A-list success and who is actually better than "ok."

^^yeah, i almost mentioned them. There are a few others.

...but there has been nothing remotely comparable, like within an order of magnitude or two, of Nirvana/AiC/Soundgarden/Pearl Jam/STP/Foo Fighters/Tool, or Mötley Crüe/Van Halen/Dire Straits/GnR/Metallica/REM/Iron Maiden, or Springsteen/Stones/Pink Floyd/Aerosmith/Lynyrd Skynyrd, or Jimi Hendrix/Led Zeppelin/Doors/Grateful Dead/Beatles.

We are over 2 decades removed from a great, hot new rock band coming on the scene, as best as I can think of. I mean, nobody younger than their early 30s knows what that's even like!

Even the "successful" bands of the last 20 years, aside from mostly being mediocre...how many people could even name or recognize the members of the band? Hell, most of them, I recognize the songs on the radio, but I couldn't name them, and many times, couldn't match the songs and the artists, haha.

[Edited on June 9, 2017 at 10:33 PM. Reason : ^^^^^ Radiohead, not very rock-ish to begin with for the most part, is from the early 90s, dude]

The new rock stars are rappers mostly, and DJs to a lesser extent.

We don't have to like it, but that's the reality.

The Black Keys is a legitimate rock band. "Hey! You're a crazy bitch but you fuck so good I'm on top of it" is not.

The White Stripes is a example of a great rock band whose music can hang with some of the older greats that strangely nobody has mentioned yet. They got big in the early 2000's. Way more legit than cage the fucking elephant and the killers.

You're getting older dude. This is all a prime example of backinmydayism Everyone's favorite music came out when they were in high school/college years, and kids these days listen to rap, not rock.

Stones, Stooges, AC/DC are all good answers

Sabbath is a good answer

Thin Lizzy is a good answer

Led Zeppelin is not a good answer

Quote :

This is just nonsense. First, what does emerge mean in an era where you can have a #1 album with less than 100,000 copies sold? The specialization of media markets does not extend past streaming services and satellite radio. Very few artists are truly emergent in the sense of penetrating all aspects of culture; the ones who do are almost always pop artists (Beyonce, Adele, etc). If you like fast, loud, blues-based rock, there are hundreds if not thousands of great bands out there waiting for you.

^^ there's a difference between "best" and "greatest".

Iggy and the Stooges and Thin Lizzy are awesome, but not in the running for "greatest".

I think it's gotta be the Stones.

(And what's wrong with Led Zep?)

You can't even be in the running for greatest rock and roll band if you don't have at least one song that is about rock and roll in your body of work.
