Wasn't sure how many of you are in a sales job, just thought we could start a discussion about what works and doesn't work in your experience. I'm trying to be better about forming working friendships with my customers and want to entertain them more. The big thing in my industry (and probably most) is golf. I have a terrible low back, and haven't even attempted to play golf in about 5 years.Would you think it's weird if someone took you and your friends/co-workers out to play golf, but didn't play themselves? If I just drove the beer cart and hung out, is that odd?

While tempting, I'm going to NOT paste the inside sales meme here.

lol, I was wondering if that was going to be the first response

I do think it would be weird to initiate an activity and not actively participate in it (driving the golf cart is not participating). That would be like taking them all to a strip club and just wait in the car or stand in the corner away from everyone else.It would be okay if you were one of the ones invited and you just cited your injury and volunteered to drive the cart.Find something else to do that you can participate in.

is your back bad enough that you can't play at all? if you can just play some of the holes it would be less weird. i've sat out a few holes playing golf at a conference before and no one thought it was strange (i was a little hungover and it was hot as hell)

Find out their sports interests, take them to a respective game if they are into baseball (Bulls) or hockey. Hell if they like basketball you can't go wrong with either Duke, NC State or Carolina games. If they're out of season, then I guess fall back to golf, but it would seem weird and obvious, to me, what you were doing if you took me to play golf and didn't play. Try to build common interests, you're obviously not interested in golf. Common interests would form more natural friendships.

putt putt could be a happy medium

I hear million dollar deals are made every day by high powered executives in the shadow of the putt putt giraffe.

What industry are you in? I personally wouldn't try to start a relationship on the golf course. I'd give them a reason to actually be interested in doing business with me and my company. Golf and other shit like that is a way to maintain a relationship. Most executives, if that's who you sell to, have very little time to golf.
