Just fell down that dark rabbit hole and binged watched most of it. Never read the book, but really liked the show. Not going to spoil anything.

Wife was sick this weekend so we binged it after great reviews. Thought the show was good, acting was all great, I just didn't like the ending. I also never read the book, so can't really speak to how closely it followed it.
5/1/2017 9:51:47 AM
I've heard there was an alternate ending in the book, but I'm sure they are just leaving the ending open in case they want to keep exploring the characters.
5/1/2017 10:08:52 AM
On ep. 5 or 6. Not sure I want to finish it. I don't want to be all sad and shit.
5/1/2017 3:36:30 PM
Yeah...probably shouldn't finish it then
5/1/2017 3:47:57 PM
I'm on episode 3. Only watching it because I work with teenagers, they're all watching it, and I want to be able to discuss it appropriately should it come up in conversation.I've been hearing and reading that counselors and mental health experts are saying the show glorifies suicide and is grossly inaccurate and inappropriate. It's a revenge story as opposed to exploring the mental health of someone who is suicidal. I'm going to watch all the way through, but I'm not excited about it.
5/1/2017 11:08:25 PM
They apparently left it open-ended because they're trying to get a 2nd season.
5/2/2017 9:11:47 AM
Watched it. Personally I thought it was overdramatic and up until the last couple episodes I was unsympathetic towards the main character.I also wanted to strangle all the parents that just let their kids wander around like that, is that shit normal now?
5/2/2017 9:35:00 AM
^Depends on the town. I've lived and taught in a few places, and each had a different local cultures of looser parental control than others. The less parents controlled their kids the more mature the kids tended to be, but the more often teens would get into things like smoking and drinking.

Wife made me watch a few episodes of Pretty Little Liars...that is EASILY the worst parenting on a TV show I've ever seen.Only consistently bad parenting I saw on 13 Reasons Why was Clay's parents who seemed to ground him and never actually hold him to any of it.
5/3/2017 9:00:28 AM
^ I think his dad was trying to be the "friend" and kept overruling the mom's punishments.
5/3/2017 9:26:30 AM
I get that actors have to wear makeup for the camera, especially to accentuate lips to help the audience see who's talking and what they are saying, but damn if they didn't make every set of lips distractingly bright and pink.

this is the show encouraging young millenials to off themselves for attention right?
5/12/2017 5:04:44 PM
It's not the young millennials I'm worried about. They're all in college now and should (mostly) not be at a point where a tv show can affect them like that. It's middle schoolers that worry me. They are watching stuff like this without knowing how to talk about it and it's going to mess with the way they think they are supposed to handle social situations.

I'll post spoilers!

So... Anyone finish Season 2 yet? Thought it was much darker than Season 1 but I still struggled to find why it was necessary for a 2nd season, and it seems like they clearly intend to have a 3rd season.
5/21/2018 10:11:22 AM
So this second season ... are these, like, the deep cuts?
5/21/2018 11:48:24 AM
More like a traditional sequel where they follow up the aftermath of Season 1. I feel like it needed a name change, but at the same time I understand why they wouldn't change it. No new tapes for Season 2, but definitely a continuation on some of the bullying and criminal activity they identified in Season 1.
5/21/2018 2:59:48 PM
I have no interest in watching the show ever again. However, since I work with teens, I usually watch whatever is trending for them so if it comes up in conversation I can help them navigate it (only reason I watched season 1, EVERYONE was talking about it and processing was necessary). So far I haven't been approached about season 2. Hoping it stays that way.
5/21/2018 4:10:42 PM
^Yeah Season 1 definitely had a ton of buzz about it when it came out, but Season 2 definitely isn't getting talked about a lot it seems. I'm not sure if the material is too sensitive now with a recent school shooting or if people just don't see the point of a 2nd season with Hannah's tapes being complete.I know they left it open to continue the series but based on lack of hype/buzz, wouldn't be surprised if they didn't renew the show.

I just don't understand how people could view suicide as glorious. Even if you have some warped sense of "I'll make them pay, they'll feel horrible" revenge mentality, with the 12-24 hour news cycle, your death would be forgotten by all those you want most to impact. And you're dead, so it isn't like you'll be around to enjoy it.

Area Man Doesn’t Understand Depression/Mental Illness

^^That comment is primarily within the context of this thread and what people are saying about the show.Suicide from depression is one thing...suicide for revenge is something else. Mental illness? Sure. But you're right, I don't understand mental illness to the point of wanting to kill yourself to get revenge. I understand that mental illness is something that you have some experience with - and I mean that in the most serious way, so I'm not going to give you shit for giving me shit here. I don't have a lot of anecdotal experience with it. I have an aunt who is a diagnosed schizophrenic, but outside of that, thankfully my family is ok.I don't understand why you're always riding my ass, no matter what or where I post.
5/23/2018 9:24:29 AM
^^You as an adult might see it that way, but I don't think 14/15 year olds do. The main kid comes to the realization that they all deserve it and helps execute the revenge plan. And he keeps "seeing" her, so it's as if she is still around. The show concept is dangerous for younger teens and they should not be watching it.I however do think it's worth it for parents to see how bullying and mental unwellness goes unnoticed in many homes and that they should be doing more to know what's up in their kid's life.
5/23/2018 12:45:38 PM
^This +1,000,000The 12 and 13 year olds who watch this have no idea.
5/23/2018 2:04:26 PM
^, ^^My thoughts as well. I do think 14/15 yr olds should watch it with a much older sibling or parent that they can communicate openly with. It did help me see things differently in the high school environment that I'm in regularly.
