So, let's try to make the argument here, without science or pictures showing that the world is round (because that is all crap and fake news), that the world is flat. What is the first thing that you would bring up to this discussion?

The first thing that I would probably say in said "debate" with a Flat Earther (which is what they call themselves) is, how can the world be flat when you can fly in one linear line West (Or East) from LA back to LA? How does fit in this scheme? They would just say that if the earth is flat and the north pole is in the center, flying from east to west (relative to the north) would just be a motion of going around in a circle that would be identical to flying around a globe.

OK, got you there, that actually makes sense. But, this is where the argument starts to crumble a bit, what about when you take a plane from LA to Columbia, and then over the South Pole headed towards Australia, then what?

At this point, even after playing their game where all space agencies from all over the globe are involved in one big conspiracy, this is where I can't believe people of today's world can actually be convinced by some ass on YouTube selling books that the Earth is flat and NASA is just one big conspiracy.

Please get somebody from the I love Trump crowd to prove me wrong.

Aside from the world looking flat in all photos (excluding those from space agencies), really interesting points like "pilots don't have to keep the nose pointed down when they fly". Also, there are youtube videos where people perched on a high building claim to see the skyline from a major city that should be theoretically impossible when calculating the curvature of the earth as if it is a perfect sphere.

umm... Airplanes naturally come back down to [the surface of the] Earth (flat or not) because gravity, so I don't get how this is an argument. The nose attitude of the aircraft doesn't directly correspond to its flight path. If you'll notice, the pilot doesn't point the nose at the ground to land. It's also very possible to descend wight he nose pointed up.

Why not just put them on a window seat in a plane and go up to about 30-35000 feet? You can see the curvature of the earth there.

or you can detect the curve of the Earth from ground level at the coast with a pair of binoculars – just look for distant ships on the horizon and you’ll see that their hulls start to disappear before their masts and other superstructure. Ancient Greek scientists, who spotted this without any optical aids, used this to conclude that the Earth was round.

^ You can measure the length of shadow made by two sticks in two different locations at the same time of day. If the Earth were flat, they would be the same length.

Eratosthenes proved the Earth was round in this manner around 300 BC.

Hell, just look at the Earth's shadow during a lunar eclipse to prove the earth is round.

Yes, you can see a "curve" on the horizon, but flat things bend. Since the earth is just a big flat plan like a piece of paper, than it obviously bends due to the gravitational forces of the sun and other stuff.

Like when you hold a piece of paper out by one end, the other end flops downward due to the force of gravity.

So, in all honesty, I am not sure if you are trolling or not, but this is exactly what you would deal with when you confront a flat earther. Which is why I think that beyond a doubt, the one thing that you can not refute, is that you can fly from Dubai to Houston, Houston to Sydney and then from Sydney to Dubai... without flying off of a cliff.

There is no way that this could be done with a flat earth. It is impossible.

This only proves that the sun moves relative to the Earth. You can do this experiment on your coffee table (flat) and move a light bulb around on a plane parallel to your coffee table. The sticks will have shadows of different lengths depending on where you move the light bulb on its plane.

Are you saying by going over the South Pole, or flying from Sydney to Dubai passing over India or the Asian continent. B/c I'm going to contend that the later is possible if East and West are directions perpendicular to the radius of the flat Earth's disk, and North and South are directions parallel to the radius. So, you're flying around the disc not around the sphere.

The coolest thing about this is that it forces you to think critically about what we "know". I totally believe the Earth is round, but I can't think of a solid way to prove it. Maybe the ship disappearing over the horizon example combined with shapes of shadows on the moon during an eclipse is the best evidence I've got.

I love the idea that pictures from space are fake!! And, while this may seem stupid, according to Neil Degrass Tyson all of the pictures we're told are of the Milky Way Galaxy from outside of it are fake. We haven't sent any space craft far enough out that they could have taken that picture and sent the data back to Earth. (According to his podcast, I don't have a link)

I really want to have a debate with a Flat-Earther now, just to see what I can prove!

And.. I've now read a better explanation of the stick shadow experiment, and that version does NOT work on your coffee table, because you measure the ANGLE of the rays of light to find that they are not the same relative to two places on the Earth, which they would be if the Earth were flat since the Sun is so much more massive and so far from the Earth.

Houston to Dubai via northpole. Dubai to sydney and then sydney to houston again via the south pole.
