ICQ was better. It actually had a search function that fucking worked, unlike AIM. Because of that I found a lot of other folks in my area outside of my usual social circles. Also ICQ was the primary way I began chatting with my wife back in high school. We used AIM as well, but it started on ICQ. She was pretty shy in person with new folks but more talkative online. So yea, ICQ and AIM to a lesser extent were a pretty big part of my high school years.

Facebook status messages today are what away messages were back then.
12/29/2016 1:01:01 PM
At some point around 2003 or so people started posting their daily schedules as their AIM away messages and it was all downhill from there.e.g.:9-12 class12-1 gym1-1:30 so fresh so clean!!! LOL2-4 chillin5:30 dinner
12/29/2016 1:47:17 PM

Who eats dinner at 530? Were you friends with senior citizens on aim?
12/30/2016 7:30:40 AM
Post ambiguous away message just to see who would send you a message.
12/30/2016 8:41:21 AM
^^ I don't know lol I never did that
12/30/2016 9:41:43 AM
AOL IM was all about the sexting before there was sexting haha
12/30/2016 2:34:16 PM
^a/s/l?Also that was fairly common on ICQ. Oh and on catfishing, I have no idea whether it was real or not, but some chick on ICQ I think hit me up for a while and we used to chat a bit. I just knew she was from LA, but she later said she was Shawna Waldron. I remembered Little Giants but didn't know the cast by name. She sent me some pics of her in paintball gear. Looked like a grown up Icebox. As I was into paintball at the time and thought it was more bad ass that a chick I chatted with online was into paintball than that she was a celebrity. It was all random as hell and we chatted for a bit longer but that was definitely my most memorable chatting with somebody famous (or somebody catfishing) thing from the instant messaging days.
12/30/2016 6:50:06 PM
it was a dude.you were chatting with a pedophile.

I love to tell Millenials how we didn't have cellphones in college, we used AIM to communicate. They laugh.
2/13/2017 7:51:01 AM
I like how you old motherfuckers like to say "Millennials" as if it means "younger people." The birthdates for the Millennial cohort start in the early '80s. I was born in '81. I'm a Millennial. I used AIM in college.
2/13/2017 8:08:22 AM
I was born in '81 but I'm not a millennial. I think I'm near the cutoff.

12/14/2017 11:34:04 AM
Ahh... the memory of leaving an away message on purpose for certain people to see. Today's kids will never know.
3/14/2018 6:03:21 PM
"hey you seem cool. What's your AIM name?""Oh I'm not on there."*awkward silence**never speak again*
3/14/2018 8:33:33 PM
That sounds like me and facebook
3/15/2018 11:43:16 AM
I too signed in about a year ago. It was kind of nostalgic to see the buddy list, but then it was depressing to see that no one was online. We used to use AIM when I worked at Nortel in 2009. Now its office communicator/skype
8/6/2018 1:46:39 PM
The art of the away message was a noble, ephemeral thing
