Crazy that we can't find them yes, but that doesn't mean they aren't there. We only really know how to look for life in ways that we know exists. For all we know, life could have evolved into sentient gas that communicates through changes in pressure. We could be looking right at it through a telescope and be none the wiser.

I agree the equation is too simplistic, and is hard to draw any real conclusions from. The thing that has always bothered me most is that we've never been contacted. With the amount of life that could potentially exist, you'd think somewhere there would be civilizations far beyond our intelligence who have figured out a way to travel to or communicate with other life forms out there. Maybe we're the most intelligent. Maybe we're alone.
