It is very distracting, especially in formal settings (speeches, news anchors, etc.).

I disagree. It's annoying. Girl at work does it ALL the time. Jump off a bridge already.

Depends on the setting, your relationship with the person, whether you find them attractive or not, and their natural vocal characteristics.

Yes, it can be very annoying, especially in formal settings, or if you already dislike the person for unrelated reasons. On the flip side, it can enhance the attractiveness of someone you already find attractive, when used sparingly and in the right settings.

Another way to shit on women, specifically millennial women.

No surprise that video came from CBS Sunday Morning. What's the average age of their viewer, like 90?

^^ Yup. The complaints about it are typically lodged by 50+-year-old males.
Although, sometimes it is annoying as hell

I don't notice it much unless it's an overdone thing.

It's really no more annoying than any other obvious affect. The "gay lisp" is probably the thing that bothers me most. Vocal fry from young women can be annoying and is clearly an affectation, but it's not generally over the top noticeable/distracting like some other vocal affects can be.

I wish I had never opened this thread a few days ago.

now, I can't unhear it. I had never noticed it before, and I've heard it so much since I think my brain is going to melt.

^^ I hear upspeak a lot too. Usually from air headed sorority sisters.

College aged people where I teach generally lack acceptable public speaking skills. I blame the internet and YouTube.
