Yesterday, I was standing at someone's desk and looking down at something when I felt something about to drip from my nose. I'm not sick, so I figured it was a nosebleed and grabbed a tissue. I dabbed my nose, but when I looked to see whether it was blood, I didn't see red--I saw a strange, bright yellow color I'd never seen come out of my nose before. That evening, I was in the bathroom and felt it happen again. And sure enough, something bright yellow was running out of my nose. I'd just happened to have been tilting my head down at the time, just like earlier in the day. So I did what anyone would do and searched for my symptom on Google. You know that feeling when a search engine anticipates what you're searching for and auto-completes your query with eerie accuracy? I started typing "bright yellow discharge from nose," and Google finished for me: when bending over. What the fuck, right? So it turns out this is a symptom of a possible condition called spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid leak. In my case, that would mean there is a hole (maybe several holes) in my dura mater, a membrane that surrounds the brain. This allows the cerebrospinal fluid that cushions the brain to leak out.CSF is normally clear! But it can appear yellow if you've got excess bilirubin in your blood, which I do because I have some kind of stupid fucking syndrome no one cares about called Gilbert's syndrome.Maybe I'll go to a doctor!
