charlotte is not just about charlotte. people needed a reason to vent over tulsa and colombus annndd....everything else
9/20/2016 11:03:15 PM
cops are well known to hate readers
9/20/2016 11:04:30 PM
why do the police have to respond to protests? when there are a bunch of people angry at police and in the streets sending a bunch of police to clash with them is the worst idea. just goes to show how little police departments understand about deescalating situations. "hey these people are mad at us for being brutal, lets show up with tanks, teargas, and riot gear so they will go home"
9/20/2016 11:05:39 PM
What was the book?
9/20/2016 11:05:51 PM
Gunzz magazine. Disabled. Waiting on his kid.
9/20/2016 11:20:10 PM
having had to deal with several cycles of violent protests in Oakland because of crap like this, all I can say is that having to deal with them is going to suck. GL, Charlotte.

When the local news coverage of this ended last night, the cops were just then corralling the protesters and leading them onto a bridge over i-85 (WTF are you thinking there?!). And then I wake up this morning to find out that they had to shut down part of I85 and that there was looting of trucks? This whole thing has been handled very poorly by police so far.
9/21/2016 7:07:11 AM
cops sayin he did have a gun.
9/21/2016 7:29:22 AM
At this point I take whatever the cops report with a grain of salt. Also - having a gun is not grounds for execution.
9/21/2016 7:34:03 AM
plenty more details need to emerge...because, obviously even if he did have a gun there's definitely nothing illegal about that.
9/21/2016 7:58:37 AM
has elusis posted the guys criminal record yet?
9/21/2016 9:01:15 AM
Just watched the press conference with Charlotte chief of police, apparently a gun was recovered, but said no book was recovered
9/21/2016 9:55:53 AM
Black cop this time. Only thing The Charlotte Observer could dig up on the guy was a DUI he got in Gaston Co. Otherwise the guy looks pretty clean.Obviously a tragic case of mistaken intent. This will look bad though - how is it possible that some guy just sitting there waiting on his kid at the bus stop could get to the point to where he would try to shoot a cop. It doesn't add up.Also, does anybody know this neighborhood? Is it so bad that children need armed escorts from the bus stop?

Don't twist my words, I'm not saying he shouldn't have had a gun, and it is somehow his fault, I was just curious if this was in a bad part of town.

it's the militarization of police that is disproportionately affecting POC and not the individual, necessarily. It is the system that causes these murders.
9/21/2016 11:24:35 AM
^^^Taxpayers I'm not saying the system works flawlessly, but the collateral damage is unnecessary. Just an excuse for weak, insecure people to lose their civility and blame it on society. The individual should somehow be responsible if found guilty. But then we would have a conflict of interest where police officers would be too afraid to engage in certain conflicts for fear of the consequences. But then again, not everyone who wears the uniform deserves or should be in the uniform. I could go back and forth on this and I don't have a pragmatic solution to the dilemma. I have ideas, but I think it would take a real conversation with worthy officers to know what its like for them and how we can mitigate this. I think it's mostly a recruiting/training issue...[Edited on September 21, 2016 at 11:28 AM. Reason : ^^^]

Scrutiny is good. These are the people society entrusts with the power to use up to lethal force to enforce it's laws.
9/21/2016 12:56:55 PM
you know what we need??? that show COPS to come back out. the cops on that show always de-escalated and detained people. that's how it's done.[Edited on September 21, 2016 at 1:05 PM. Reason : ]
9/21/2016 1:04:37 PM
Bc there was a camera on them
9/21/2016 1:14:37 PM
Oh yeah, the officer wasn't wearing a body camera in this incident
9/21/2016 1:16:17 PM
No, not because there was a camera, because I seriously doubt that a body-cam is going to elicit any change in behavior. No, a camera for a TV show is what did it.
9/21/2016 1:17:14 PM
Plus COPS was the best reality show of all time.OF ALL TIME.

COPS is still on Spike TV, new episodes air Sat 8PM. Should be hitting their 300th episode later this season or early next.
9/21/2016 1:58:19 PM
the worst show
9/21/2016 1:58:49 PM
Scrutiny is good, and I'm all for accountability. But how? I can't remember or find the article/video, but I recall one a few years ago when a young officer pulled someone over. The occupant had a firearm and pulled it on the officer. The officer hesitated to pull his own firearm. By the time he did, he had already been shot several times, left on the side of the road to die. This was apparently days after his department was criticized and was under investigations for pulling weapons carelessly or being too aggressive. Do we just ignore this? Criminals don't abide by laws. So how do we combat this? How do we enforce accountability? How do we disband the "us vs them" culture?
9/21/2016 2:03:16 PM
Oh, I didn't realize that it was still on. My black ass can't afford cable these days (refer to income disparity by race chart).^It depends. Do you want to arm our police officers with fear based on anecdote or do you want to go on statistics?[Edited on September 21, 2016 at 2:05 PM. Reason : ]
9/21/2016 2:03:52 PM
So I see the shot while reading a "book" narrative has predictably been abandoned already. Not that any of the facts really matter to those people besides a cop shot another black guy.
9/21/2016 3:33:53 PM
9/21/2016 3:36:23 PM
JCE which statistics are their fears based on again? srs question.
9/21/2016 3:44:37 PM
oh jesus christseriously?
9/21/2016 3:47:27 PM
So unless there is some smart phone footage that's yet to be posted this is going to be a 'he said she said' situation. Thanks to our GOP legislature body cam footage is not available as public record, but I'm sure it'll be 'leaked' if the police narrative is the correct one.
9/21/2016 3:54:57 PM
that law isn't even in effect yetand in all fairness to the GOP, most of the democrats also voted for it. in fact more republicans voted against the bill than democrats[Edited on September 21, 2016 at 4:10 PM. Reason : .]

I hope the police release the video they have, because I don't really believe anything they're saying. The police have lied in pretty much every other shooting incident that became national news.
9/21/2016 5:03:10 PM
^And the other side hasn't? "Hands up, don't shoot"
9/21/2016 5:12:43 PM
