Explosion in Chelsea area of NYC. At least 2 dozen injured. Early reports from a couple reporters indicate IED in a dumpster per sources on FDNY and NYPD but not confirmed on any major news sites as of yet but all over TV.

Earlier today a pipe bomb went off at a Marine sponsored 5k in NJ and more unexploded along race route, may or may not be related incidents. My guess would be related, maybe even the same person or group.

They've not "officially" confirmed it was an IED, but it was an IED from multiple reporters via FDNY and NYPD sources.

Proximity and time frame is what would indicate that they may be interconnected, don't know anything about devices themselves at this point so can't do more than suppose. It would be very coincidental though.

There's no indication that this was say, Islamic terrorism, or neo-nazi terrorism, but I'm having a hard time thinking of none terrorism motives for detonating a device in a public area.

Looks like the NJ pipebombs were a lot smaller. Still doesn't mean they're not related, maybe 2 separate groups coordinating an attack?

Fox news reporting second device is a pressure cooker device. Not seen any other sourcing on this yet.

^In New Jersey it was 3-4 pipe bombs wired together but only one went off. Also, very fortunate that start of race was delayed so no one was on the course when bomb detonated.

My understanding of those things is that it doesn't take much. The enclosed space amplifies the force of the explosion and the shrapnel is the real danger anyway, not the blast.

Twitter is a cesspool when this happens. I did read a CBS story but are you sure you're interpreting this correctly? Witnesses heard the word Allah and then asked if they were Muslim. Could be the attacker was trying to avoid Muslims? Though, that isn't exactly a usual thing in Islamic terrorist attacks.

This NYC thing, though serious, doesn't strike me as the kind of mass casualty thing ISIS or an ISIS inspired attacker would prefer. There have also been no claims of responsibility from ISIS on social media or radio. This is more reminiscent of old school leftist bombings from the 1970s like the weathermen.

The pressure cooker bomb they found and disarmed/performed a controlled detonation of was similar to Boston. The one that went off was apparently in a toolbox and doesn't seem to have been a shrapnel device.

Not super sophisticated stuff, not a high profile location. Given that it's Chelsea it could have been targeting gay people but that's pure speculation.

This is saying he stabbed 8 and they all survived.

Assuming the weak pressure cooker bombs and pipe bombs were also ISIS, this doesn't seem like a successful attack on their part in terms of casualties.

If this is the best they can manage as their territory dwindles, then we don't really have much to worry about.

Maybe. Problem is that these ISIS inspired attacks are nearly impossible to predict or stop. Lethality is a matter of what the attackers gets ahold of and uses.

The NJ bomb hurting no one was a stroke of pure luck. The race start was delayed, and only one of the devices went off, had race started on time we're looking at injuries and possible casualties.

I don't think NJ and NY are ISIS, I think it's probably leftists or anarchists.

Minnesota has a very large Somalian community, plenty of whom are refugees and almost all of whom are Muslims. It's a very fertile recruitment area and there have been some nasty incidents there there this summer.

Being confused about different Islamic terror organizations doesn't mean he wasn't inspired by isis. There's also zero evidence for the self loathing gay theory that was so popular early on. It was an islamist attack.

At some point we need to take these people at their word. We wouldn't question a white supremacist who claimed to be inspired by rival white hate groups.

Lack of specific target makes me think it's not a right wing group that would have targeted a minority area like Harlem.
