honestly, probably some alpha male mentality shit

but do you agree with your bff vinylbandit that Prince was a better guitar player than Jimi Hendrix? Cause I'll argue that asinine shit all day, since it's asinine.

Price has done things on guitar that aren't replicable

Jimi, while insanely amazing, doesn't have that claim

if he was such a good guitar player that you claim he was better than the G.O.A.T., how come he couldn't replicate something he already played? And how the hell is that a plus?

He couldn't play something he already played, so somehow that's an argument for him being better than fucking Jimi Hendrix? lol

I don't seriously know, but aren't you the same way?

And seriously, if you're gonna claim that Prince is better than Jimi and you want your argument to hold any merit, you've got to do better than "Prince played something and said he couldn't play it again" as if that's some kind of compliment to his abilities with a 6 string.

you're the type of TWWer who makes it his mission to call out people for being non-politically correct and you claim you're not even close to being argumentative? Ok.

I mean, you took a thread that basically said "Jimi is still the greatest," called me out for arguing too much, and are doing nothing but arguing. Yet you're not also just as internet-argumentative as me?

Might I suggest youtubing Michael Jackon's "Man in the Mirror"

Words help explain your opinion when arguing, not trying to be snarkily concise.

You can think Prince is a better guitar player than Jimi if you want, but you haven't made any decent arguments to convey that opinion.

All you're really doing is arguing, yet you seem to be completely ignorant to the fact that you're doing what you hijacked the thread to do.

[Edited on April 24, 2016 at 12:36 AM. Reason : ibyou harp on the word hijacked]

Because he was not only an groundbreaking innovator and trendsetter, and by far the greatest guitar player at the time he was alive and active, but he could do anything with a guitar. Maybe you could argue since Prince lived 30 years longer that he put out more music or something, but I still don't get this notion that anybody, Prince or otherwise, could fuck with Jimi's skills and overall musical ability. I mean, most people agree with me that he's the best, and all you've done is hype up that Prince couldn't recreate an intro?

Music ability with a guitar. Prince was more diverse with his music as a whole, but that's not the argument that you latched onto.

If Prince and Jimi were both given some sheet music to play off the cuff, maybe Prince would do better. That doesn't mean he's a better guitar player.

just seems like you and VB's argument is that Prince is a better technical guitar player than Jimi. As if music is math and not an art.

I'm trying to actually argue substance and not witty retorts

In this thread, but VB has said as much in his arguments previously. I figured y'all would be on the same page and whatnot.

So why is Prince better again? Because he couldn't play something he played before? That's your only argument in this thread, correct me if I'm wrong. And it's a weak argument, if not terrible.

pretty easy for you to search for videos of Prince playing guitar

even easier for you to read every response in this thread

Hendrix is obviously an all-time great, but Prince was a virtuoso who did things (plural, just in case you thought he only did one solo), that aren't replicable.

What's your obsession with replicability? How is it a compliment if you can't exactly replicate something you've already done?

And I mean, did someone ask Jimi if he could redo the Star Spangled Banner again in the exact same notes and cadence and stuff? Did he say no? Your argument is weaksauce.

And just like you're giving Jimi props, Prince is a great guitarist. But you are trying to argue that he's better than the Muhammad Ali, the Michael Jordan, the Babe Ruth of the guitar, and your one, single, solitary argument against the vast consensus is he couldn't replicate what he'd already played?

if your suggestion is that jimi was more innovative than prince, i'd agree with that

but i firmly believe that prince could do anything that jimi could do and more

plus he's a superior composer and was a studio-quality musician on numerous other instruments

a severe limiting factor on hendrix is that his entire recording career lasted less than six years, and his career as an artist barely more than three. he might've gone on to do even more incomprehensible things, but we'll never know

prince picked up/expanded on almost every innovation in guitar playing in his 35+ year career

if you want to call it a tie, that's fine by me, but the difference is subjective; there's not a gulf of talent between them

See, I appreciate you for actually debating this. And I honestly value your insight on Prince's talents, and didn't consider him as great a guitarist as I did years ago when you put him in the convo. It's certainly a tough argument because of body of work, era, etc, and I'll still put Jimi at the top, but I genuinely enjoy your perspective as a music nerd (compliment.)

And don't you think that if Jimi had lived a full life, that he could keep up with Prince at minimum?

i mean, you could talk about that forever

paul mccartney wrote some of the best songs you'll ever hear, but also some of the worst

so who knows what would've happened if hendrix had kept going

some artists make relevant things 20, 30, 40 years into their careers and some don't

not much rhyme or reason to who can keep it fresh/quality

in short, ¯\_(?)_/¯

Exactly.

I could probably name a couple dozen guitarists who would play circles around Jimi Hendrix, period, end of story. SRV, Nuno Betancourt, Steve Morse, Dave Mustaine, Vai/Satriani/Yngwie/John Petrucci/etc. I would even argue Brad Paisley.

Jimi Hendrix was a pretty good player in terms of chops, but the reason he's the man is that he was so innovative. I also wish I could hear his stuff with better recording quality.

(also, if you want to compare apples to apples instead of Nuno to Jimi, I think you have to discuss Slash...although it's kinda moot, since that one's a fight for 2nd behind Stevie Ray Vaughan. )

Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhoads deserve mention somewhere in here (partly for the same reason as Jimi Hendrix--they introduced that style to the world), and while he's less flashy, I enjoy the hell out of Mark Knopfler. Chet Atkins is another subtly impressive guitarist. And yes, Prince was a great player.

dude can absolutely rip, and is as clean a player as you'd ever want to hear. it's kind of sickening.

these kinds of solos aren't really my cup of tea, but they're still pretty mind-boggling.
