You could just set up a wireless router as a bridge and do this same thing, no? With some DD-WRT? I think I did exactly that a few years ago with an old WRT-54G so that I could connect my arduino to it

I bought this one from amazon (first link). It's a repeater, that has a ethernet port built into it. My desktop upstairs with an old wifi adapter in it was only getting about 5 mbs. For a desktop, i'd totally just go with a powerline adapter. I'm using one for a desktop I have upstairs and it's AWESOME.
