Went and hit some balls at the range last week for the first time in years. Still slice it every single time almost haha. At least I only completely missed the ball like twice which is a lot less than I assumed.

I apologize for what follows. it is really just a random assortment of thoughts. but this questions seems to be a fairly common one. I think many people find themselves in this situation (or some variation thereof)

Do you have both? if so, the obvious answer is whichever one is more reliable for you (assuming they are similar distance).

do you have room in the bag? personally, I like to keep my bag at 14 clubs. this is a little strict, but I enjoy playing within the rules (I mean, what's the point of a game if you don't?). if you have room, and they play different for you, then put them both in the bag.

if you haven't played them both before, keep in mind that if they are similarly lofted, you may still get more distance from the 5w, as it will have a longer shaft and therefore higher clubhead speed (in theory).

the 5w may be a better option off the tee on long par 3. 3h might be better in difficult lies (e.g. thick rough).

No, I don't have both. Yes, I have room (lots of room) in my bag. I do have a 5w, and I'm just wondering if it is worth the $$ to invest in a 3h if I already have a 5w, and I'm considering both distance from the fairway and playability from the rough.

I keep a 3H instead of a 5W just for the tough lies. I can get the ball up and out of bermuda rough A LOT easier than trying to get a wood all the way down to the ball with any consistent contact.

The 3H is actually been useful to me around the greens a couple times in the past month when I've been up against the collar and used it with a putting stroke.

I actually play a 7w. I never planned on doing that, but I bought a TM V-steel 3w years ago and liked it so much I got matching 5w and 7w. at the time I was also playing my original set of clubs, including TopFlite irons from like the mid 90s (3i-P). the 7w made the 3i irrelevant.

fast forward to this summer when I was looking for new irons. I bought a set of Callaway XHot2 (4i-A). I now have pretty nice spacing from the irons to the woods. having the 7w made the iron set a tad cheaper (since I wasn't looking to get a 3i), and I can hit the 7w way more consistently than I could ever hit a high iron anyway.

btw i'm not a good golfer by any means, but since this thread is here, I figured I'd mention that I've put in almost 20 rounds since April, and have gotten my average score down from around 100 to 90.

back in high school was when I started playing, and I wasn't good then either, but I was OK enough to be on the school team. my personal best I shot a 92 in a school tourney, which stood my entire golfing life until this year when I shot an 87 just a few weeks ago.

Looks like Tiger is actually playing well, he might be able to really fine tune his game again and play...his short game looks really good...and that's where he won tourneys, not his distance.

Crazy thing was, I didn't even really realize I was scoring that well...

next day I hit 83 so it was a fluke

It'll be interesting to see how he can build on this. It's probably the most positive he has played in 2 years. If he can even get back to 85% of his peak performance, he will be contending all through next year.

I saw a stat that he had as many birdies/eagles as Matsuyama. Unfortunately, Woods had a bunch of bogies/doubles. Should be expected though.

This is the most recent thread I could find on golf.

I have played a few rounds of golf on actual courses but this was probably 6 or 7 years ago. After a trip to Scotland and St. Andrews I have the desire to start attempting to play again.

Any suggestions on the best way to get myself to the point I dont look like a complete idiot out there? Last time I played most of the time I was picking the ball up at 13 and just moving on to the next hole so I was pretty terrible. Are there courses around Raleigh that are a bit more beginner friendly or not so busy so I dont have people breathing down my neck and having to constantly let people play through?

I know the driving range is option number one but that will get old fast I am sure. I live near the Wendell country club which I assume will be a good place to start as it shouldnt be super busy but figured I'd see what TWW has to say.

Get some lessons...unless you have a good swing that just needs work on consistency. If you've got some kinks, you need a professional to work those out.

I've actually played a few rounds for the first time in over a decade (just completely stopped after college). I was pretty good in high school...consistently shot in the 85-90 range...breaking 80 wasn't too uncommon. But I was afraid I was just going to absolutely embarrass myself when I played for the first time about a month ago.

Fortunately/unfortunately...I played pretty well. Fortunately because I didn't embarrass myself...unfortunately because I think I have the golf bug again (and I don't really have the time or finances to fund that bug right now ). While I shot a 110...I had one birdie and a couple pars and on the front 9 was consistently driving it 250+ down the middle of the fairway and hitting great iron shots. But I wilted on the back 9 and my putting was atrocious.

I think if updated my equipment a bit (my driver is 20 years old and the head is half the size of the guys I was playing with...I slipped a couple of time on drives without golf shoes...my grips are disintegrating...and I don't have a sand or lob wedge) and hit the driving range once a week, I could probably get back down to bogey golf. We'll see if it ever happens though..

I am already looking forward to my first legit triple bogey. I dont know that I am serious enough to pay for lessons at this point I need to play for a bit again with my hand me down clubs and on a few courses to make sure it sticks before I go investing money in my own clubs and things like lessons for sure.

Is Knights Play still around? I was rushed into action when I played my first round about a month ago...but if I had to do it all over again...I'd go...

- Driving range

- Par 3 course

- Driving range again

- Play a real round

Driving range first to see if you can get your swing back and somewhat consistent. Par 3 course to solidify those irons and short game a bit. Back to the driving range to hopefully get your drive decent before playing your first round. Then time to get your dick wet!

Yeah it is only annoyance is its in Apex and I live in Wendell so its a bit of a trek over there but I plan to include that in my first few rounds. I feel I need to hit the driving range a few times and take notes on how long each of my clubs is playing so I dont go out there hitting things 50 yards short or over the green.

Start with your short game.

Honestly, Start working on chipping and hitting the ball 50 yards with a wedge or lofted wedge like a 56 degree or more.

You can work a lot out on your game as far as when you make contact just by practicing that in your backyard.

Otherwise, it's all repetition. Finding a swing that fits your speed and body.

Look on youtube and watch instructional, a ton of help there.

As for clubs I recommend Callaway Pre Owned you know what you are getting and they constantly have sales. I have gotten to where I am below 100 but still not willing to spend texas on brand new clubs. Also took a few lessons which really helped me in controlling my driver and that is what helped me break 100.

You must be the Worlds worst.

You need to work on hitting one club consistently evertime. Like a 7 Iron. Hit it every hole if you have to. My Great-Uncle played that way when he was old and still would shoot 80s.

Phil Mickelson has a really good tutorial on Youtube about putting.

I joined a club. I still only end up playing once a week or maybe once every 2 weeks 9 holes after work. All my friends who do golf either have "lives" or don't live in the RDU area or are terrible. I shoot 46-54 no MATTER where I play, etc.
I average 2-3 penalties a round, hit about 65 percent fairways, and average 2.1 putts per hole. Take away my penalties, the fact that I am very short since I am not flexible and have a terrible back swing and I have potential to shoot 80. That being said I played at Eagle Ridge a month ago and was 33 through 8. Just a simple bogey and I would break 40 for the first time. I ended up shooting a 10 but a 43 is still my best 9 hole round

mind you this is all with starter clubs, no lessons, and probably bad swing in general.

I am sure the improvement from shooting 180 to shooting like 140 comes pretty quick. I would imagine getting under 90 or so takes years of playing consistently. Thats less than 5 shots per hole I mean you see pros out there shooting in the 80s on a bad day. Gonna try to hit the driving range this weekend try to take some notes see how things go I will let you know how the first few rounds go maybe I am not remembering things right from 6-7 years ago but I dont remember any holes being lower than maybe a 9 but cancelled out by all the 12s and 13s.

I don't think you should be on a course if you're in the 140-180 range. I've played a couple foursomes where we're all in the 110 - 125 range and I felt like we were borderline on fucking up the course rotation. Get some lessons, hit the range...and if you want to play some holes before you get out of that range, call up and make sure you get the absolute last tee time.

How short are you? I'm 5'7", not overly flexible, and I have no problem with my backswing.

I would be going as a single which would help with that and I have no issue letting people play through so its never been a problem in the past. Last time I went to the range I was making good contact with the ball which was a bigger issue last time I played so that should help if I can keep that consistent. Nothing ruins a score quickly like skulling the ball down the fairway then into the water haha. Im also going to go more prepared this time with more knowledge of club distance and an idea on how far I am hitting each club. Before I just showed up and grabbed a club so I was always over or under shooting distances by quite a bit.

I ended up going to Wil-Mar probably the closest place to me with a range. I'd say about 30% of my shots were very good and went where I expected them to go, 50% were good solid contact but either were line drives close to the ground or sliced etc. then there were the 20% where I missed, skulled, or generally it only went like 10 ft. I would have felt bad but when I watched the other people out there they seemed to be doing fairly similar so maybe thats not as terrible as I thought. Obviously I need to work on eliminating that 20% as I can live with solid shots that just dont go straight at least they are making progress towards the hole haha.
