Motörhead were pioneers of speed/thrash metal/punk. Lemmy was a hard-partying legend and was well-respected throughout the "rock-and-roll" community.

Surely you've heard of "The Ace of Spades" (and he also co-wrote Ozzy's "Mama I'm Coming Home")

A lot of the shock is due to the suddenness of his passing. He found out he had cancer on the 26th and died on the 28th
