I can solve all of the problems with police.

Education and Salary:
Better, more formal education will lead to police who are "people persons" first and "soldiers" second. There should be levels of police based on levels of education.

Masters: The top level of police should be required to have a masters degree in a related field and should be publicly elected.

Bachelors: There should be different levels of police with different levels of power. Power that the typical officer currently has should only be granted to those with a college degree. These police should make significantly more money than the typical officer does today but there should also be fewer total officers as these will work more effectively as well command lower officers.

Associates: These officers do not carry guns and are simply eyes and ears for the police with proper training. The other police carry all of the guns and can hand out guns to associates if the situation presents itself. Municipalities should provide continuing education opportunities so that these entry level police can ultimately earn a higher degree.

Specialty Training: Every officer is a specialist in at least one area. Specific situations require police with specific specialties. This already happens to some degree today.

Psychology- Many police officers have no idea how to approach people during conflict. Many are great at it but it either comes natural or it doesn't at this point. We need to train police like we train child psychologists so that they can diffuse situations instead of ignite them. Most of them need to have this training.

You would still have swat, hand to hand combat, riot control and all sorts of "special teams" for special situations.

Duties:

Police shouldn't really be regulating transportation or mind altering substances as part of their daily routine. Its a huge distraction from their main duties and also provides too many opportunities to put them at odds with their communities. In general, we need to scale back the duties of police so that they can focus on doing a good job instead of regulating every aspect of society.

- Regulate traffic with cameras and computers
- Legalize weed

All of a sudden police have like 60% fewer things to worry about and can do a lot better training for the things we absolutely need them to worry about.

During conflict?

"Hey Mike Brown, I know you just reached for my gun and punched me and you're rushing to fight me again, but this psychology class taught me to" *gets knocked out*

In that type of situation, psychology training would prevent the officer from being rushed in the first place. Its about deescalating incidents before they get to that point

That isn't how arrest works. Police have no obligation to try and coax a criminal into calming down, if they show weakness that will just be exploited.

It's easy for a TWW liberal to say "use magic money to make evil racist cops magically nice through training". In reality though cops have to deal with suspects on drugs, possibly with weapons, that are desperate and stupid. I'm sure a feel-good solution like "why didn't the officer put down his pistol, give Mike Brown a hug, and do trust falls?" appeals to the left, but it has to basis in reality.

The world was done a huge favor by the shooting of Michael Brown!

One violent thug was taken out.
The Ferguson #BLM got their martyr to give an excuse to get some cool free shit by looting then got to frame a societal issue of police violence into the new civil rights movement using Mr. Brown's death as evidence that the system just picks on poor African-American folks

I get where you're going, but I think your faith in pieces of paper that prove someone's education level is misplaced.

And, you're asking someone to put in what, $80k worth of education if they want to advance in their police career to turn around and make 60-70 at the top? Granted, I have no idea what top-level police make, and I'm assuming when you say top level, you're talking about detective and above, but you really give no reference for the current framework of the police force.

Do police forces alternate beats? I bet if the same cop works the same tough area day in and day out, that contributes to the problem. Yea, you'll get to know the people and the area really well, but if you are assigned a bad area, I'm sure it will eventually get to you.

That's just a guess by me...I really have no idea what the pay structure is like for police, other than not enough.

But the OP just shows how out of touch people really are. To require a masters degree for policework? And what he probably doesn't realize is that many municipalities require at least a 4 year degree.

Not all terrible ideas, always good to look for better ways. The associates though, would they walk around in uniform throughout inner cities reporting crime?

Except we shouldn't let people drive around when they're fucked up, and cameras are not the answer to traffic regulation. The overhead alone would be smothering, and that's just the beginning.

Agreed. Impaired driving and reckless driving should be policed, but it can be done in targeted manner (more police around bars at busy times and at closing, more on the highways during holidays, etc.) but speed cameras, as imperfect as they are, would be superior to cops sitting on the side of the road looking out for speeding out of state motorists or at the bottom of hills.

Cops should not be revenue collectors and their budgets should not be tied to the revenue they collect as is the case now in many places.

Areas with high rates of violent crime would have higher concentrations of masters and bachelors. Associates would get easier assignments thus freeing up the specialists to do the difficult policing.

Just because someone has a bachelor's or masters degree doesn't mean they will be a better fit. I've met several college grads who couldn't figure there way out of a wet paper bag.

Notice how the "problems" haven't even been defined? This limits the productivity of the discussion because that's where the 2 sides generally disagree.

shouldn't we try to correct the few bad apples and prevent them from doing harm? because doing so is a net positive...if it can save lives (including the lives of officers) then shouldn't we try to improve training, for example?

"Improve training" is pretty vague. Police already receive training, and given how rare unjustified shootings are, the training is already very effective. Again, the "problem" needs to be identified... what specifically is the problem, what do the statistics say, what do we want them to be, and is it feasible?

That's not a popular question among most of those people because they just want to cry about a statistically irrelevant "problem" the media has exaggerated. Since the statistics don't support the narrative, the resulting dialogue has to be vague and avoid specifics at all costs.

i don't think anybody is limiting the problems to only unjustified shootings. "abuse of power" is vague and broad...but definitely applicable.
