Say what you will about drugs, but that man's best music came from when he was whacked out of his gourd.

bums me out

saw them twice. once while he was on heroin, once while he was sober.

one of the most underrated bands of the 90s for sure

^Underrated? You couldn't turn on a rock station on the radio in the 90's for more than an hour without hearing one of their songs. I mean yeah they were deserving of more awards than they received, but I think that was more due to Weiland not being a showboater.

AND FUCK the original poster for posting a picture of Scott Stapp instead of Weiland; that shit is disgraceful.

The man was an incredible musician and performer and I'm lucky to have seen him perform three times. He was definitely a more animated front man back when he was on the hard stuff, but never failed to impress. Live hard and die young, can't blame the guy.

Compared to Pearl Jam? Fuck yes. Blows my mind how people prefer PJ over STP.

I disagree, but it's a matter of preference when you compare the two singers.

PJ sucks. Sorry, but it's true. Most overrated band of the 90s aside from RHCP.

Nirvana, Sound Garden, STP, AiC, and PJ were/are all awesome. This is a stupid debate.

Most people are. It's the #1 reason I post on internet message boards.

Here's the thing about STP - what made them great wasn't Scott Weiland's songwriting, it was the combination of his stage presence and the amazing talents of the DeLeo brothers and Eric Kretz. STP songs are classics despite the fact that Scott's lyrics were a bunch of heroin induced nonsense. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Alice In Chains all had much, much more talented songwriters.

I can't think of anyone in the history of music who ever got better after getting more sober.

WTF? That's probably the least-good AiC album (definitely if you're talking about their full-length albums).

I can't believe people put SG in with the lives of Nirvana, PJ, AiC, and STP. Not saying all four of those are equal but SG is by far the most generic, uninspired band out of all of those.

Hank Jr. At least he could make it through an entire concert when he was sober.

Soundgarden wasn't uninspired

they just ran out of steam earlier in their career than the others, IMO

calling Soundgarden uninspired is insane.

With that being said, in retrospect as a 30 year old, the Seattle music scenes was pretty lame overall.

^ you must have fallen on your head.

^^^ Ehh, when did he sober up? The last 10 years or so? I saw him a few times in the late 90s/early 2000s, and he appeared to be shitfaced most of the time. He's always been a shitty live act, I think.

He certainly hasn't been any good in the last decade or so, so I don't think I'd make him the poster child for sobered-up musicians.

they might have gained popularity Bc of the Seattle music scenes but they didn't exist bc of it.

A quick google search shows they met at a black flag show in the mid 80's.
