the military is just a job works program to support american imperialism, unless the veteran fought in WWII or were drafted in Vietnam their paycheck is all the support they needstop acting like every service member is a hero, they aren't[Edited on November 12, 2015 at 9:31 PM. I expected a paycheck when I was in and now I expect the benefits I've earned. Those benefits are the GI Bill/VA homeloan and compensation/care for my injuries. I, like most of my fellow veterans, don't care if anyone thanks us for our service, gives us a free meal once a year, throws up a yellow ribbon in their yard. Their support is appreciated but not expected.

For the record I've done 3 deployments: 1 to Iraq for USCENTCOM, 1 Japan for USPACOM, and 1 (that's recently been all over CNN with CVN-71) to the Arabian Gulf, again for USCENTCOM. I've been in the Navy for a little over 10 years. I agree 99% with [USER]behe[/USER]. I expect a paycheck and the benefit programs that were/are available when I joined and while I'm active. Thanking me for my service doesn't really do anything for me. I'm more convinced it's to make the "Thanker" feel good than to do anything for the Vet. Golden Coral and the NFL play the yellow ribbon game for the same reason Yoplait plays the pink one: [I assume, but have no data] It's a tax write off, and cheep advertizing. I don't ever expect a free meal, or a discount. That being said, if it's offered I'll usually accept, but I rarely ask.
11/13/2015 5:13:30 AM
You bunch of low life privileged assholes. These men and women fight so that you are ABLE to flip your fucking burgers. Without veterans you would be speaking German or butt fucking goats. You idiots have no idea what keeps you free because you've never lived in a place that wasn't. So fuck all of you. Go to Chapel Hill where all the other tree hugging liberals are. Bitches.

Of course dtownral feels this way.You know some people get a signing bonus with their job. Some people get performance bonuses. I see the GI bill as a sort of signing bonus. You do you realize that many military positions require highly specialized and trained individuals, who if in the private sector would easily bring down six figures? The military has to do something to attract those folks.Unless you're talking about what some others have brought up, about buying them a meal or something, which I doubt anyone expects.[Edited on November 13, 2015 at 7:20 AM. Nobody is saying this abput ww2 vets. It only applies to beterans after ww2. None of those wars have protected our freedom.

Does being free involve sub $3 a gallon gas and access to bananas year round?
11/13/2015 8:01:05 AM
there's some truth here.
11/13/2015 8:01:17 AM
So what? After the last WWII vet dies we should just cancel Veterans day? What kind of support are you people complaining about?

- calling every service member a hero- aggrandizing veterans as part of a larger over-the-top nationalist patriotism - NFL teams getting $7 million dollars of public money to recognize soldiers and show giant flags at half-time- the weird football-military relationship in general- the way that blind support for military turns into a culture that says its unpatriotic to criticize any military action- the way too much support makes it easy to forget that our military is too big- the fact that a lot of our military actions are completely immoral etc...[Edited on November 13, 2015 at 9:17 AM. so "cut military spending" and "keep military out of football" is your argument and you take it out on the people that work day-to-day? write your congressman and suck a dick.

11/13/2015 9:23:35 AM
^^not acting like every service member is a hero is "taking it out on people?"are the members of our military that fragile? i don't think so, why do you think they are all fragile snowflakes?[Edited on November 13, 2015 at 9:24 AM. Reason : .]

My Veteran Hero is LCDR Penlandhttp://www.syneedapenland.net/2015/05/for-immediate-release-military.htmlTHEY ARE ALL HEROES AND IF YOU DARE SAY OTHERWISE YOU ARE A SCALIWAGGING RASCAL UNCOUTH AND UNCOMELY UNPATRIOTIC LORD OF DITHERING UNAMERICANISM
11/13/2015 9:30:42 AM
I never said they are fragile snowflakes. The fact that you want to diminish the value (even perceived value) of a person's work is certainly "taking it out on people". So please, go ahead and place that cock into your throat.
11/13/2015 9:34:00 AM
brah, your argument doesn't even make sensethis is the type of ridiculous overzealous patriotism that we need to challenge. Not every service member is a hero, most of them are just doing their job, some of them are even bad at it, some of them are assholes, some of them are criminals, it's okay to accept that.[Edited on November 13, 2015 at 9:45 AM. Reason : .]
11/13/2015 9:35:44 AM
If LCDR Penland had merely been just "doing her job" she would have never sucked so much D. I think it's safe to say that many people go above & beyond the call of duty and should be recognized for that.
11/13/2015 9:39:30 AM
how dare you talk about a hero like that
11/13/2015 9:44:34 AM
^ Perhaps you, good sir, have found your potential calling as a JAGIf you like rooting out corruption and evil in the oft-times bloated, inefficient, and unjust military machine (And you aren't impressed with the glazed over version of a patriotic military) then please begin a career as a prosecutor putting Penlands in the brig.

your argument is a simple one that really displays personal butthurt. it's a commonly used one. here's a few examples:stop acting like every police officer is a racist they aren'tstop acting like every transgender is a person with a disorder they aren'tstop acting like every black person is a victim they aren'tstop acting like every white person is a privileged asshat they aren'tstop acting like every person that lives in downtown raleigh is a walking example of faggotry they aren'tevery job field has worker ants and bad apples and misuse of funds. we all know that. just because people appreciate the military as a whole and thanks everyone within the organization doesn't make it overzealous patriotism.
11/13/2015 10:15:39 AM
My only issue is the fact that people seem to think soldiers have the monopoly on courage. Like it somehow diminishes what a soldier does if someone else is called courageous. We've all seen what I'm talking about on Facebook.

11/13/2015 11:42:09 AM
my favorite are these guard members that have never been deployed (much less injured) accepting free shit from the Wounded Warrior Projector traveling to the next state for training for a month and then "surprising" their kids at school when they returnthese fucks are riding the coat tails of people that have actually done shit for our country[Edited on November 13, 2015 at 12:01 PM. Reason : most vets are not heroes][Edited on November 13, 2015 at 12:03 PM. Reason : but many deserve our thanks]
11/13/2015 12:00:35 PM
So why do you exactly care if someone is doing something like wearing a yellow ribbon or buying a meal for vet? How does it affect your delicate little world. If someone holds the door open for you, do you scream at them for assuming you needed the door held open?
11/13/2015 12:01:03 PM
is that a question to me? it doesn't at all, i don't give a shit.but it's part of a greater problem this country has of blind nationalism and that's a problem that we need to confront. also, the military is a jobs program for a lot of people and that's a problem. we need a major national jobs program, but that effort should be focused on domestic issues like infrastructure. we should radically reduce the size of our military and form a new Civilian Conservation Corps

I don't mind honoring veterans, if nothing else for their perseverance and honor of the commitment they took to serve even when the cause was really a fabricated hoax to further american imperialism in the middle east. It is not the soldiers fault. The one thing I don't get is all the organizations focused on getting donations and gifts to soldiers currently in deployment. From the soldiers I have known and met, they aren't exactly struggling financially. Sure the paychecks aren't the biggest but with all the overhead covered by Uncle Sam, all their income is disposable. Back in school I always remember the folks I knew coming back to visit from deployment driving brand new motorcycles, wearing the newest Abercrombie, always buying rounds for shots.I'd more likely support a wounded veterans group. I really do feel bad for the guys that come back fucked up from the middle east, with life altering injuries all the name of getting Halliburton better defense contracts and setting up better oil alliances. (At least from an Iraq perspective)
11/13/2015 2:37:44 PM
^that's mostly because they don't have mortgages to worry about, so shots, abercrombie clothes, or a motorcycle isn't really that big of a purchase when compared to a home. also, depending on their age, financial literacy isn't always very high. those care packages that some of these orgs put together do actually help for deployed people stuck in the middle of nowhere. money doesn't really get you anything when there isn't a walmart in your part of Afghanistan.
