No, because it is an egregious and blatant waste of food. All people who buy pumpkins to carve them and then don't consume them will go to hell.

The carving kind are just barely edible anyway, and they contribute to sustainable agriculture in other ways by providing the soil of farmer's fields with an important break from staple crop rotation, and the leftovers contribute to 'green manure', much like daikon 'tiller' radishes or rye/oats that are not harvested, but contribute more to the soil than letting it fallow for a season. Pumpkin cultivation also supports beekeepers and native bees and other insects, as growers must be careful with pesticides to have a successful crop. If you want to talk about food wastage, an argument could be made that the Americas produce too much food for the current population, or have too much land under cultivation for current needs. The obvious counterargument is that crops aren't just food anymore, for one thing; and nobody will abandon good ag land at this point, nor shouldthey in view of the coming population explosion, at least until we can better manage yield, storage, and distribution. Growing another type of vegetable can be tricky, mainly in finding a market, but 'u pick' pumpkin patches make akilling almost anywhere without contracts or packing plants nearby. Rotation with non-staple crops will help keep this land relatively healthy compared to the 'lazy' megafarmers who just do corn and soy or corn on corn, and they also contribute to jobs for farm workers, as they are labor-intensive. So DON'T demonize pumpkins as a source of waste![Edited on November 2, 2015 at 12:57 PM. Reason : ]

Yeah, that was a silly thing to say.I carved a few, roasted the seeds, and the pumpkins are now providing food for the slugs in my yard, and they'll soon be in my compost pile and provide fertilizer for my vegetagles next spring (and they often lead to a few volunteer pumpkin plants)
