Is this a popular store/retailer? I had to google it. Do the frat boys at State wear this instead of North Face nowadays?

For me: A good quality water bottle. For a suggestion: A decent vacuum flask like clean canteen or hydroflask. I use mine every day. Best purchase I've made there after all the shitty mugs/thermos kept breaking.
10/23/2015 12:10:27 PM
i too could use an inexpensive multi tool

I've got Leathermans, Surefires, Streamlights, Spydercos etcSo I don't need to go to whatever REI is for flashlights, knives or multitools from what sounds like The Gap - Outdoor Edition

^ you gotta be trolling, not knowing about REII do agree that the clothes are more about being trendy than functional. People in Raleigh be like, I gotta get this $299 Mountain Hard Wear jacket so I can go brave the elements in Umstead Park.
10/23/2015 11:36:25 PM
I've heard of a lot of companies that make jackets, but not REIPersonally, I only wear Summit Ice
10/24/2015 12:28:22 AM
With $20, I'd buy a pair of exofficio underwear and call it a day. That's some comfortable stuff
10/24/2015 11:35:33 AM
If you are trying to be trendy you do not buy REI branded clothes, you buy a name brand
10/24/2015 12:30:45 PM
For staying warm, y'all should try being drunk.
10/24/2015 1:11:57 PM
I wouldn't expect to have to say this but apparently their are some misguided people up in here. First of all, REI carries more than their own brand. They carry Marmot, MH, Patagonia, TNF, and so on. So saying you shouldn't go to REI to buy clothes because their brand isn't good (which is also off base) is just baffling to me. Secondly, their clothing isn't functional but only trendy? What the fuck? Just because some people wear it to be trendy doesn't mean it isn't functional. Technical wear is designed specifically for function and that's where the price goes up in a lot of cases. I usually buy my outdoor gear and clothing online but you can get enumerable pieces of gear from REI that you would confidently take on multi day trips, up >6000m peaks, and all kinds of extreme outdoor pursuits.

^ Fo real. I rarely spend more than $15 on a pocket knife, but that's because my needs are more along the lines of cutting up small chunks of food or fruit, maybe cutting rope/cord.I guess if you're going to go on some stealthy serial gutting rampage then REI may not be your best bet for knives.

lol REI sells outdoor shit sometimes for very cheap (and yes they also sell all the big name brands). I have found more stuff there for cheap than I've found online especially during their outlet sales, yard sales, and last season sale racks. If you do pretty much any physical outdoor activity then it's arguably the best place to go try shit out and easily return it if you don't like it. Plus their REI brand stuff is great quality. Especially some of their tents and clothing. Anyway for $20 I'd probably buy a bunch of Mountain House biscuits and gravy. That shit is delicious for freeze dried ready to eat meals.[Edited on October 28, 2015 at 10:19 PM. Reason : freeze dried not freeze fried]
10/28/2015 10:11:58 PM
I've never tried the biscuits and gravy. Is it really that good? Doesn't seem like it would turn out well. I live by the rule of, "If it's reddish orange, it probably tastes good."
10/29/2015 4:58:31 PM
So I've really only eaten it the next morning after a long day of hiking or something else and it's great. Salty and very tasty. I'd say better than most fast food biscuits and gravy. With that being said I haven't tried it at home and not really hungry but I recommend it for backcountry trips. My other favorites are chili mac, beef stroganoff, pad thai and sweet and sour chicken. Those are all pretty great.

Also some of their "urban camping" branded stuff this season looks fun. I think it's branded as 'Evrgrn'. Here's the stuff: http://www.rei.com/search.html?q=evrgrn&ir=q%3Aevrgrn&page=1This one is particularly funny: http://www.rei.com/product/882939/evrgrn-crash-sack
10/29/2015 5:49:13 PM
I had not seen that REI line before. Check out how much overlap it has with all the stuff that "poler stuff" (http://www.polerstuff.com) makes. It's like almost the exact same! The urban lumberjack/80s canvas hiker/PNW vagabond look must really be popping for REI to jump in too.I've actually considered the napsack by Poler. Seems like it would be good for getting out of the tent to watch stars/sunrise/take a piss (pissing may be more complicated in it actually.) I kinda wonder how warm it would be as an actual sleeping bag though. Like maybe use it as a summer/early fall bag (not sure on weight either)?[Edited on October 29, 2015 at 6:55 PM. Reason : Poler not poker]

Haha the BROTANICAL is hilarious. Picked up an REI brand fleece for $30 after the 25% off coupon for members and a pair of Prana pants that were marked down like 40%. Per usual the sale rack was packed with xs and xl+ stuff. Really nice Marmot, Northface, Arcteryx, etc stuff from last season marked down 40-60%. If only I weren't a medium.
