Need to upgrade an old machine, anyone k ow of any reliable free downloads? Or am I stuck buying the disc from Apple?

On a related note (and might help you), Ive been able to download the image for older apple OS before from apple for free, but never have been able to get a burned disk to load. Any ideas there?

when i helped my ex format her old macbook pro for resale, after using the tools partition to wipe it, you could download os updates from the apple store. i installed mavericks
