Going to New Orleans tomorrow through the following Saturday. My weekdays (daytime) will be booked, but I'm free otherwise. I'll be staying near the Superdome during the week; the weekend before and after will be closer to downtown, or whatever they call it (Marriott).

Any suggestions on good food, beer, entertainment, etc.?

I went in July.

One of the favorite meals was at Commander's Palace. It is expensive but worth it. http://www.commanderspalace.com/

I also really liked Le Bayou. http://www.lebayourestaurant.com/

I loved sitting in bars and listening to jazz. If you have time, check out the World War II musuem. It will easily take you a couple hours to see the whole thing.

just seeing this, so apologies if it's late - but check out Bacchanal if the weather is nice in the evening for some outdoor drinking/dining. Live music many nights, just a cool place. you'll need to cab it from downtown, but it's not too (about 3-4 miles I think)

I'll be there from a late Wednesday night to Saturday Evening in mid-September. Could potentially stay Sunday - Saints are playing either Tampa or the Browns, which I don't care all that much about.

Where are the best places to eat that we can get a reservation? Best places for Jazz? Any must-see historical sites? I love cajun and French cuisine and especially love some fresh seafood/shellfish.

Trying to remember the place I went to...acme seafood maybe? Not bad, not great. I'm sure someone will chime in and say it is a place that only tourists go to.

^River run is worth it! New Orleans approach will keep your VFR FF through Armstrong class B and then they'll transfer you to Lakefront Tower. It's a fun 20 minutes.

Coops in the French quarter is a hole but has incredible Cajun food. Toups Meatery is also good.

^^ didn't make it. I worked my balls off making it VFR to Jackson (KMBO) and back the day before. We decided that our odds of getting weathered in there in the afternoon/evening were going to be pretty considerable, so we cnx that plan...we'll do it another time. Cruised the beaches for a while and then landed in Destin (DTS) for lunch, then some more sightseeing and back home.

This river-run of which you speak...tell me more. I was just gonna come in over Pontchartrain, as I'll be coming from the east. I assume you're talking about following the river in from Baton Rouge, coming from Corpus Christi? I mean...I could go VFR and file PCU-HMU-BTR-KNEW just for the sake of running the river. You do it at 500', maybe dipping lower if there are no people/vehicles/structures for a ways?

It's been at least 4 years since I've done it... but yes, we were coming in from the west and now that I brought up sky vector, we followed I10 and picked it up south of Baton Rouge. (about 175/10 off the LSU VORTAC) Looking at the chart, I would want to be at least 2,000 Ft to start, but I remember us being like 500 after we pass the first tower at Plaquemine (basically where you pick up the river). I wouldn't drop much lower if you're not familiar with the geography. I remember there being power lines that cross that river a few times.

Heading down tomorrow and staying in the French quarter. Never been, so looking for a restaurant or two (and bars, other things to see/do). Coops looked good and nearby. Probably trying to just walk around and drink and eat for 2 days if anybody has any recommendations

Check out Frenchman street for good music rather than the crap on Bourbon. Basically you go to Bourbon to say you did it and move on (like Times Square in NYC). You can get drinks anywhere so that isn't a problem (and you can walk around with them as well). Sign up for a tour of St. Louis Cemetery #1 as well (Free tours by foot but you will tip $5 or $10 which is worth it).

Just got back from there on Saturday, right as all the craziness for the LSU game was ramping up.

Commander's is legit for lunch. If you buy an entree, you can have up to three 25 cent martini's. Food and service were outstanding. Jacque-Imo's is still great for dinner. Did Brennan's for breakfast, and while it was good, I thought it was a little overpriced.

Frenchman Street is where it's at for nightlife, so if you're over 30, avoid Bourbon and most of the bars in the FQ unless you want to party with children.

Overall, I really enjoyed myself and I look forward to going back again sometime soon.
