Anyone got any experience with BMW diesels? My 2002 Jetta now has 450k+ miles on it and starting to look for something to replace / back it up.

Looked at a 14 BMW 328d xi and like it, but not sure how it might hold up... want to get another 400k out of the next car.

Don't want another VW as their quality has drastically gone down and they pissed me off with the my last purchase -- a 2006 Jetta TDI for my wife which I have since sold.

I rented a new one in Germany a couple of years ago, so I don’t have any long term reliability info on them, though inline 6 diesels have historically been very stout. That said, typically the engine itself may not be the issue on most modern cars.

Anyway, I wanted to write in to say that VW’s 2006 diesels were not the highlight of their reliability, though they only had a handful of issues (which to be fair, if you had to pay a shop, would be expensive), and as of about 2008, they’re significantly better FYI.

The VW never had any motor issue, it was just the radio buttons, the CV joints, hole in the exhaust manifold, EGR valve, headlights, and DSG transmission...

All had to be replaced.

Working in the automotive industry, and having been in VW and Ford plants in Mexico I'm determined to not have something built in Mexico.

FYI the F60 3 series doesn't have a 6 cylinder diesel like the E90. They downgraded to a 4 cylinder.

I had a 2011 335d (awesome car by the way) for 3 years and never had an issue with the engine. Recently had a baby so traded it in for a 2012 X5 35d and havent had any issues yet. Any of the BMW forums (im a member of Bimmerfest) should help you research any issues.

The biggest issue with the 6-cyl diesel was carbon buildup (especially on the 335d which didnt really push the engine during normal driving), but I imagine the 4-cyl diesel drastically reduced/fixed this issue since it is a smaller engine. Im sure you're aware with your diesel experience but driving long enough for the engine to come to full operating temp on a regular basis seems to be a key to the longevity of diesel engines.

AVON and I went and looked at it. he kinda chickened out because somewhere someone had an issue w/ the 4x4 sensors or whatnot. he's a coward and is looking at prius now... man card status --> revoked

it's a newer BMW.

no way in hell you're getting 400k out of it.

you'll be lucky to make it to 100k without at least $10k of repairs.

yeah... i don't even trust the truck diesels to last like that with all the common rail electronics.
