As a mod, you should realize how serious topics are constantly being put in Chit Chat instead of their appropriate messageboard sections.[Edited on July 13, 2015 at 1:02 AM. Reason : also give me til about august 10th i believe to comment on the photo that spawned this thread]

The United states is cultural appropriation
7/13/2015 7:59:29 AM
I honestly never got this, the US is and always has been a melting pot of different cultures. As long as you're not mocking a culture, who the hell cares? If some white girl wants to put cornrows in her hair, I really don't see the big deal.[Edited on July 13, 2015 at 8:20 AM. Reason : 1]

^ I've recently learned that a lot of indians are really butthurt about cultural appropriation lately from some of the indian subreddits.I think these people are simply looking for a reason to be offended, because none of the shit they're all up in arms about is even close to mean-spirited. nobody is being oppressed. it's probably why i only have a small number of indian friends, and refuse to attend any large scale indian gathering. I get angry after interacting with 5 people.
11/23/2015 9:58:51 AM
Indians are some of the most prejudiced people you'll ever find. They're a very, very highly stratified society and believe in their own greatness as a people. Indians did everything first, and they did it 2000 years before everybody else. Just ask an old Indian man, he'll tell you. I love Indians and we could use a fuckload more of them in the US. They have a great outlook on hard work, education, and entrepreneurship. Like almost every large immigrant group they start off insular and eventually open up a bit more, it's just taking longer because a lot of the Indian immigrants are educated and/or relatively wealthy so they avoid assimilation a little bit longer than many groups.
11/23/2015 10:36:59 AM
yeah, i can't really argue much of that.Indians are so racist that we've invented ways to be racist against ourselves, and it's built into the culture for centuries. many or most indians also tend to be very insular, and avoid assimilation and interaction with non-indians. Thankfully, my parents weren't like that and thus, my sister and I weren't raised to be like that.
11/23/2015 11:05:03 AM
^,^^All Asians are pretty racist... Arabs, South Asians, East Asians, Central Asians, Russians, you name it.
11/24/2015 9:33:40 AM
Not sure if it's racist so much as nativist. I saw an Indian cell phone commercial on Cricinfo once where the parents are talking to their daughter in the States, and the joke for this corporate produced commercial is the daughter is trying to hide from her parents that she is dating a white guy. At the end of the commercial he talks and says hi, her mom says "he's a gorah" (Indian term for white people).[Edited on November 24, 2015 at 9:02 PM. Reason : /]

^ forget about that... look at the real racism within the countries against other tribes, castes, sects, ethnic groups, language speakers, colors, family names, etc.ask any real indian, pakistani, or arab about the different groups in his/her country and the relations/feelings between them.

I still maintain that all races on the planet need to have a massive bareback orgy and make a big swirl. I'd pitch it as the solution to end all racism in like three generations, but I'm just in it for the fucking.

Ha. Should have thought of this as a way to get better cafeteria food during college.
12/20/2015 8:58:34 AM
^^ seems like the obvious solution is to change the little sign from "General Tso’s" to "steamed chicken and fried rice"

it looks like a staged scene to me. might have been for a class or something. SFSU has a film school, so that's my guess.

Hate to be a fakesayer but it kind of does look like she's smiling/laughing...if it's not, that guy is a complete chump. He FELT emotionally unsafe or some such bullshit.
3/29/2016 9:28:35 PM
Probably staged, but the fact that it's even possible that this could be real speaks volumes about how fucking stupid people are. Dreadlocks aren't uniquely black, and honestly the idea of cultural appropriation rests on pretty unstable footing.

3/29/2016 10:59:29 PM
wait, I thought General Tso's was Americanized to the hilt already
3/29/2016 11:05:02 PM
Cultural appropriation is a natural part of human societies, it's the primary way cultures evolve, I'd argue it's a healthy sign. Conservative minded people who get bent out of shape that their perception of culture is becoming outdated or changing need to get with the times.Doesn't mean it's right to caricature or mock a culture like the Red Skins or parties where rich white people dress up like their impression of the ghetto.
3/29/2016 11:36:44 PM
^ hey man, that offends me. It's Redskins. Get it right
3/29/2016 11:48:15 PM
3/30/2016 12:02:51 AM
General Tso's chicken was (most likely) invented in America as a sweet and spicy fried chicken dish. To replace it with steamed chicken would be an insult to the Chinese immigrants who invented it.
