To the degree that hipsters extort an aesthetic of a format without genuinely being into it, then I'd say probably.[Edited on June 19, 2015 at 3:21 PM. Reason : k]
6/19/2015 3:21:11 PM
is that picture related? i.e. the owners or something?
6/19/2015 3:53:21 PM
This will last... one month. I give it until their first rent check is due.
6/19/2015 3:59:15 PM
i hope someone walks through this place with a magnet
6/19/2015 4:07:27 PM
It hasn't even begun. I think they said something along the lines of "we're looking around the thrift stores to get tapes for you to rent." Wow.
6/19/2015 4:09:26 PM
so this will be the place to go now for heroin?
6/19/2015 4:43:36 PM
Fact: Hipsters are super into old exercise VHS tapes nowadays.
6/19/2015 5:15:56 PM
Damn, I really miss the days when people accused me of being a hipster. I just love being able to dress up everyday like it was ridiculous cosplay or something and fitting right in with the crowd. Because, when you think about it, in a lot of cities hipster is more or less a norm these days.
6/19/2015 5:33:46 PM
i'm so happy i live somewhere where there are zero hipsters.
6/19/2015 8:09:18 PM
what is the actual point of a VHS store in 2015?
6/19/2015 9:27:01 PM
6/19/2015 11:13:37 PM
^ While that's true, there is a ton of stuff on VHS that doesn't exist in any other format.I know these folks, and they have thousands and thousands of VHS tapes.
6/20/2015 12:29:42 AM
but every time you play it (or rewind it, or fast forward it) it's going to degrade the quality. it should be digitized.
6/20/2015 1:10:05 AM
Not even worth arguing. Highly doubt their collection is worth batting an eye over. [Edited on June 20, 2015 at 1:15 AM. Reason : k]
6/20/2015 1:13:25 AM
I didn't say they were good VHS tapes. But there are thousands.
6/20/2015 2:06:36 AM
If they have Lawrence of a Labia I'm so there. These 3 guys look like respectable business men.
6/20/2015 9:36:32 AM
^^i think to be fair I'd have to look at their stuff. My whole thing has to do with how genuine they are about it. If they're really into vhs I have no complaints.
6/20/2015 4:37:12 PM
I love obscure movies, but this is a deeply flawed idea. It would be awesome if this actually built a community of like-minded individuals in real life, but VHS is a horrible format and even if something was only commercially released on tape there are likely better ways to watch it. I would imagine most of these movies that are worth watching (either because they're good, they're so bad they're good, or they're just fucking bonkers) are available in a better format, even if that just means somebody ripped it when it played on German cable at four in the morning and put it up on Cinemageddon. VHS is a terrible format to begin with, and it ages horribly. I get the romance of dead formats (I say as I sit next to my shelves full of vinyl, stacks of GameBoy cartridges, weeping yet again for the death of 35mm), but this is kind of silly. Now that I've said all that, this sounds exactly like something I would have done when I was 22.
6/20/2015 6:07:25 PM
^. Yo you got any nes, snes etc?
6/20/2015 6:48:15 PM
6/20/2015 7:13:09 PM
there are certain types movies I would much rather watch on VHS, even if there is a better quality version available somewhere, watching it on VHS just adds to the overall experience. For me these are the direct to video action/scifi flicks of the mid 80's to mid 90's. Of course I grew up in the golden years of these types of movies, and used to love just walking around the video store looking at the awesome cover art. I don't really think anyone in their early 20's could get the nostalgia factor like I do with them. Here is my vhs collection (which I also proudly hang as a piece of wall art):
6/20/2015 7:40:29 PM
^what I'm talking about. Totally legit and fine. See above for my overall complaint. Good job, dude. And I agree with what you said completely. I understand it, have friends like it, and respect it.
6/20/2015 7:48:32 PM
6/21/2015 1:13:33 PM
Hipsters are terrible. And no, I'm not calling vinylbandit one.
6/21/2015 1:56:25 PM
GD, synapse beat me to it.I was going to go more along the lines of:
6/22/2015 9:54:17 AM
6/22/2015 5:37:39 PM
ahahahahaha thread of the week!
6/22/2015 10:25:04 PM
6/22/2015 10:58:44 PM
Yeah their logo is really awful.
6/23/2015 9:18:45 AM
Out of everything that is awful about them...I don't think the logo is all that bad. It's giving off a late 1980s apple logo feel. Which is probably what they're going for...well...looks like they're going for a complete rip-off. Guess you can't trademark a color scheme:[Edited on June 23, 2015 at 9:44 AM. Reason : .]
6/23/2015 9:42:25 AM
The parody logos are way overdone these days. They used the same font as the old Apples, and it's on some other stuff I can't remember right now. It was popular in the mid-80s. Showings/screenings/events is cool. Chopping Mall and Death Spa, which they had an event for, is cool. But seriously, the rental thing is dumb. If they have anything worth renting, they're running the risk of losing the rarer, more expensive titles. Nobody wants to rent Titanic on VHS. Nobody except some idiot hipster anyway...[Edited on June 23, 2015 at 10:57 AM. Reason : Trapper Keeper]
6/23/2015 10:56:58 AM
I hope they have a deep selection of old WCW PPVs
6/23/2015 12:04:49 PM
I should donate my VHS copy of Gummo to them. It's better on VHS.Please don't say "Hipster spotted."
6/23/2015 8:29:34 PM
I've been looking for years for a copy of my handicapped uncle hitting the tree in our back yard on my mini dirt bike. Customer for life if they have it.
6/24/2015 1:09:07 AM
They should put Youtube videos on VHS and rent them out.
6/26/2015 12:27:49 PM
They felt the need to clarify that they are not racists or bigots:
6/26/2015 1:22:29 PM
You felt the need to make a big deal about it.
6/26/2015 1:36:26 PM
Just kinda weird to make a random facebook post about it. Almost like someone accused them of something. Also, is the webpage a work in progress? I go to it and it is just the logo.
6/26/2015 1:40:08 PM
^ That post is related to an issue with a show that was booked, it wasn't just out of the blue.I wish I could find a picture of all of their merch. The Seinfeld Prisma stuff is particularly good.
6/28/2015 10:50:24 PM
Renting players now. What are they gonna charge, a dollar?
6/29/2015 1:44:31 AM
Eh, a VCR in good working condition is not something you can just walk out and buy in most places.
6/29/2015 6:36:08 PM
VHS is a horrible technology.VCRs are prone to fail and destroy your media at the same time. The fact that we moved past VHS should be celebrated, not lamented with nostalgia.[Edited on June 29, 2015 at 7:15 PM. Reason : ]

I can't imagine any scenario in which this business model works out. This is one of those "learn something from failure" instances in which you learn that you were a fucking idiot if you thought this was going to work.
6/30/2015 8:06:00 AM
6/30/2015 10:44:07 AM
^^ I doubt there's a "business model" here to speak of
6/30/2015 11:00:24 AM
The current hipster density of downtown may be enough to sustain this business for a week.
6/30/2015 11:21:19 AM
I may be interested in buying some of their VHS tapes once they go out of business
6/30/2015 11:39:21 AM
I wish them success, but I doubt it will be one.
