To the degree that hipsters extort an aesthetic of a format without genuinely being into it, then I'd say probably.

It hasn't even begun. I think they said something along the lines of "we're looking around the thrift stores to get tapes for you to rent." Wow.

Damn, I really miss the days when people accused me of being a hipster. I just love being able to dress up everyday like it was ridiculous cosplay or something and fitting right in with the crowd. Because, when you think about it, in a lot of cities hipster is more or less a norm these days.

Vinyl at least has great sound quality. VHS picture (and sound) quality degrades over time like a motherfucker.

^ While that's true, there is a ton of stuff on VHS that doesn't exist in any other format.

I know these folks, and they have thousands and thousands of VHS tapes.

but every time you play it (or rewind it, or fast forward it) it's going to degrade the quality. it should be digitized.

^^i think to be fair I'd have to look at their stuff. My whole thing has to do with how genuine they are about it. If they're really into vhs I have no complaints.

I love obscure movies, but this is a deeply flawed idea. It would be awesome if this actually built a community of like-minded individuals in real life, but VHS is a horrible format and even if something was only commercially released on tape there are likely better ways to watch it. I would imagine most of these movies that are worth watching (either because they're good, they're so bad they're good, or they're just fucking bonkers) are available in a better format, even if that just means somebody ripped it when it played on German cable at four in the morning and put it up on Cinemageddon. VHS is a terrible format to begin with, and it ages horribly. I get the romance of dead formats (I say as I sit next to my shelves full of vinyl, stacks of GameBoy cartridges, weeping yet again for the death of 35mm), but this is kind of silly.

Now that I've said all that, this sounds exactly like something I would have done when I was 22.

there are certain types movies I would much rather watch on VHS, even if there is a better quality version available somewhere, watching it on VHS just adds to the overall experience. For me these are the direct to video action/scifi flicks of the mid 80's to mid 90's. Of course I grew up in the golden years of these types of movies, and used to love just walking around the video store looking at the awesome cover art. I don't really think anyone in their early 20's could get the nostalgia factor like I do with them. Here is my vhs collection (which I also proudly hang as a piece of wall art):

Out of everything that is awful about them...I don't think the logo is all that bad. It's giving off a late 1980s apple logo feel. Which is probably what they're going for...well...looks like they're going for a complete rip-off. Guess you can't trademark a color scheme:

The parody logos are way overdone these days. They used the same font as the old Apples, and it's on some other stuff I can't remember right now. It was popular in the mid-80s.

Showings/screenings/events is cool. Chopping Mall and Death Spa, which they had an event for, is cool. But seriously, the rental thing is dumb. If they have anything worth renting, they're running the risk of losing the rarer, more expensive titles. Nobody wants to rent Titanic on VHS. Nobody except some idiot hipster anyway...

They felt the need to clarify that they are not racists or bigots:

"Just to clarify. Prisma-Video is a place for all people in the Triangle community. That includes all races, ages, orientations, classes, religious and spiritual beliefs. This is a safe place for people to have fun and share audio/visual culture, artistic expression and technological interests. Discrimination and hate of any kind will not be tolerated.

Also, is the webpage a work in progress? I go to it and it is just the logo.

I wish I could find a picture of all of their merch. The Seinfeld Prisma stuff is particularly good.

VHS is a horrible technology.

VCRs are prone to fail and destroy your media at the same time.

The fact that we moved past VHS should be celebrated, not lamented with nostalgia.

I can't imagine any scenario in which this business model works out.

This is one of those "learn something from failure" instances in which you learn that you were a fucking idiot if you thought this was going to work.
