America is pretty good, all told

you can burn the flag, and if you want hold a Muhammed-drawing contest, the police will come protect you against angry Muslims

and there's a lot of upward mobility and so on

America is pretty okay, in my book. Kind of like my parents. They do some stupid shit - all kinds of of stupid shit, all the time - but they're really wonderful folks, take it all around.

But theres not a lot of upward mobility. People on this site wont really know that first hand.

Anerican exceptionalism is propoganda. North korea thinks they are the best, too.

[Edited on May 21, 2015 at 12:25 AM. Reason : we are pretty far down the list on any ranking related to upward mobility]

There certainly used to be, I know that. I mean, upward mobility is hard to facilitate anywhere. But I mean, there're student loans and scholarships for minorities and poor people and shit. What, is it true that other developed countries have more upward mobility?

^^
My parents have a pretty nice house, actually.

Most people don't move out of their little income sphere. I know a pretty decent 2bed apt that costs 14k a month I can rent you when you break out of the bubble.

Student loans? lol. They are one of the main things keeping people down.

Its pretty absurd how people so quickly assume "america is down" also implies " down with america".

Aside from the simple fact that its hard to take down something that is already in free fall, anyone who wants to make america better would first seek to point out its flaws

You can do all of that, but if you ask for a white appreciation day you will get shot in the face.

The white people who ought to be appreciated do not want a white appreciation day. that's pretty much a talking point for people whose primary source of information is infowars and Fox news.

I feel like it's bad ass that even if you're dirt-poor, you can borrow $40,000 and (in principle) get an EE degree from N.C. State

yes, it's going to suck owing $40,00, but it's not going to prohibit you from having an eventually very lucrative career

I agree there is MASSIVE potential for self-sabotage w/ student loans, but I still think it's pretty awesome that they exist.

i find no reason to celebrate the color of my skin, of which I have no control. (well, other than going out into the sun which turns me various shades of red)

^^^or we could live in a country where it doesn't cost so fucking much to get a degree. And hasn't tuition/room&board gone up to be way more than $40k to get a 4 year instate degree from NCSU??

Yes, tuition and fees are now $4,275.44/semester. I was retardedly thinking that that included room and board.

Also, you make a good point: it looks like tuition is capped at 8000 pounds in England, and there isn't any fucking tuition whatsoever in Germany.

However, it's worth mentioning that the U.S. has shitloads of the best universities in the world, at least if you measure by quality of research.

Pay your shit off when you get that baller ass job and stop buying cars and houses and shit until after your shit is paid off. It's simple, people!

and don't borrow money to get a bullshit degree that you don't (or barely) use, to do a job that doesn't pay, and wasting 4+ years that could be spent earning money and gaining work experience.

Or do, but at least know what you're doing and understand that it makes no sense financially. We've made college the new high school, but our expectations haven't been similarly diluted.

the lack of upward mobility is so bad that

people have been brainwashed into thinking they should be happy to have the privilege to pay thousands of dollars more than the already ridiculous cost just to get access to knowledge and skills.

the fact that anyone thinks student loans are awesome is the essence of how bad the problem truly is.

Quote :
"Pay your shit off when you get that baller ass job and stop buying cars and houses and shit until after your shit is paid off. It's simple, people!"

that period is essentially slave labor, no?
Why should anyone have to pay 6 figures for a "public" education?
Quote :
" to get a bullshit degree "

If there is such thing as a bullshit degree, that would also be part of the problem. How would a public university offering a "bullshit" degree be an example of upward mobility? Sounds like taking advantage of the less fortunate to me.
Quote :
"to do a job that doesn't pay"

jobs that don't pay aren't a good sign of upward mobility. Why do these exist?
Quote :
"and wasting 4+ years that could be spent earning money and gaining work experience."

because nothing says upward mobility like "hey kids! stop wasting your time with education and get some work experience"

I don't usually agree with this e man character because he's generally trolling, but he's 100% correct here. Companies benefit from your spend on education, not you. You have to pay money to be able to join the club. Shit is indentured servitude, and the sooner society wakes up and realizes it, the better.

I worked through college to pay my tuition and room & board. The bill gets much smaller when you don't borrow all of it and be proactive. Only borrowed 11,000 for a 4 year degree. It doesn't have to be "slave labor" and actual slaves would be ashamed that you're referring to paying for a loan as slave labor. Man up and pay yo shit.
