I've only heard of one of those bands. Tycho opened for Alt-J and they sucked.

With that being said, I look forward to investigating these bands and hopefully finding something new I like.

I always feel that way, and I don't know if it's b/c

1) they're not in the genre I listen to

2) they're super indie

3) I'm old

I imagine it's a combination of all three and me not having great musical taste / listening to the same shit all the time

--
Folks I'm interested in are mostly hip hop:
Lizzo
Pusha T
Cakes da Killa
Skyblew
Carlitta Durand (love her voice)

Only actually seen two of these bands, which is probably the most out of any year they've had this festival. Godspeed opened for Nine Inch Nails when they were at PNC in fall of 2013 & wasn't really a big fan. Saw Wovenhand open for Tool in 2009 & that was actually pretty good.

It'd be awesome if one of you Type-A organizing types would sort these folks into genres

Or more simply, who are the folks that making this lineup worth buying into?

Just a quick glance, i only recognize Godspeed, Dwight Yoakam (funny, my gf was just listening to some songs off his new album last night), Eyehategod, Phil Cook, Birds of Avalon, Deerhunter, X, American Aquarium, TV on the Radio, and Must be the Holy Ghost.... and I'm not a big fan of most of those. but of course, I really don't keep up with music like I used to.

this will def. be my first year not doing VIP or even a 3-day pass for that matter. i'm probably just going to grab a thursday day pass this year as GY!BE, deerhunter, and battles make it worth my while. i'm sure TVOTR will be cool on friday, but i saw them 6 or 7 years ago when they were peaking and don't want to taint that awesome show. the saturday lineup sucks.

me from a few years ago would be psyched about deerhunter, but I didn't care for monomania

Juiced for X, Pusha T, and I guess I'm gonna have to start listening to Dwight Yoakam

Yea I'll def check out Deerhunter. I would have seen them a long time ago if Billy Corgan had not have replaced them with a fucking drum circle.

I've been listening to a lot of these bands on Spotify to check them out and the only one so far I've found that was good is Deerhunter, although there's a few I've heard that would probably be good live and/or while drunk/high. I also found out that Pusha T has had/co-starred in some hits that I was familiar with.

So, I've never been to Hopscotch. What are the odds I'll be able to see Godspeed You! Black Emperor without having to drop $85 on a day pass?

100%

they sell single event tickets for the City Plaza shows and they've been $30-35 in the past

Seriously, I just don't get it.

Why don't you get some Muscle Shoals-era Atlantic/Stax stuff and mix in some Neena Freelon CDs or other smooth jazz and you'll have the same effect, with people that can actually sing and also have actual soul.

Done hating, but damn.

never fails that they schedule 2 of my top 5 in roughly the same slot. this year it was Natalie Prass and Pusha T. I also wanted to see Le1f too.

got no real plans for Saturday night beyond seeing the amazing city plaza set of X and Dwight Yoakam - any suggestions?

I'm going to assume you haven't heard/seen her live. I like the album arrangements, but I think she's much better with a band backing her.

I haven't found many videos of actual live shows, but here's a decent example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AarmssVA5Sg

I don't like it, and that still offers no explanation. However, enjoy her at Hopscotch. Thanks.

I think the explanation is that people have different opinions and like different kinds of music. I know that blows your mind.

I think the explanation is you're following me around on your little website here like some child engaged in territorial pissing or something...

lol, what? this is the first time i've even addressed you (or even seen you post) outside of the chit chat thread where you decided to hurl all kinds of judgmental stereotypes and insults at me and others, even going as far as to send me a private message. Anyways, Hopscotch has lots of music. Some appeals to some people, some doesn't. It's a shame they won't have a Buffalo Wild Wings food truck there.

The Natalie Prass record is a little twee for me, but it's not bad.

It's funny that Grandma Sparrow got mentioned, because to me that record sounds like a lost Olivia Tremor Control album and I like it a lot. I'm sure the lyrics are incredibly silly, but I don't care because I don't know what they are.
