Royals fan here, we aren't going to win the central. No way we replicate some of the statistical anomalies we had last year.

AL East - Baltimore
AL West - Seattle
AL Central - Cleveland
WC - KC, Boston

NL East - Washington
NL West - LA
NL Central - Chicago
WC - St. Louis, San Diego

Would be nice if my AL wild card pick won a game this year.

In other news Mets' fans should be beating their meat tonight.

Anyway,

It is completely ridiculous that Jon Lester hasn't attempted a pick off move in two years. You can't convince me he's not fucked in the head.

“I like to talk — and I have spoken as candidly as I can with you people, if that’s not good enough, I won’t say a fuckingthing. I’ll go, ‘yes sir, no sir.’ And I can do that. But fuck, I’ve been as candid as I can fucking be about this team and our players, and we’ve got to deal with this shit, every fucking team that we fucking play has to know every fucking guy that’s here and what they can and can’t do? fuck me. It’s a fucking disgrace. I’m fucking sick of this shit. It’s fucking hard enough to fucking win here to have fucking every fucking opponent know exactly what the fuck we bring to the table every day. It’s fucking horseshit. I don’t like it. It’s what I’m saying.”

The poor woman in Pittsburgh...I wish I hadn't watched that. Now I'll probably never sit behind home plate even if I have the chance to do so.

I listened to some ESPN analysts calling it suicide to not be paying attention at a baseball game. Yeah it's dangerous, but I feel that language is too strong. Also, the insinuation that mobile devices are to blame is ridiculous, when the woman was clearly just trying to get to her seat. She shouldn't have turned her back to the field, and a lot of interweb commentators are saying it's her own fault, but I disagree with that as well. The net didn't seem to do any good and every park needs to tighten them up to keep this from happening.

tightening the nets only leads to a greater chance of balls breaking through the mesh and entering the crowd. that's why there's slack in every batting cage net ever.

is it her own fault, yes. but if she was returning to her seat the section officiant should have waited for a stoppage in play as well.

^Agreed. Most sporting events (and even non-sporting events like theaters and concerts) there are certain times you can't get to seats from the concourse. Baseball is different because of how little the "ball is in play" but if you have to leave your seat you should wait until the next half-inning change to come back.

Million to one shot, doc. Million to one. Probably less than that. Freak accident and I doubt something similar has happened in the last 40 years, or at least since all stadiums have had that screen behind home plate. Unfortunate, but lets not do anything drastic just because of one statistical miracle.

it was one guy (Tim Kurkijan, I think) and he was specifically referring to some seats next to the first base dugout in Fenway that are presumably not behind a screen, which is a lot different situation. I've sat in some seats near/next to the dugout at minor league parks where there was no screen and it had me on edge enough to move after a couple innings, even though I was paying attention.

also yeah, tightening up the nets would be dumb. if you are in the front row, you should 1) pay attention and 2) not get that close to the net. I'm sure thousands of people have done it before, but this is why it's a bad idea.

The Wainwright injury certainly tightens things up a bit in the Central. The Pirates and Cubs should both get a boost to their confidence if he's done for the year. I still think St. Louis has the pitching depth and winning mentality to win the division by five or six games.

Yesterday's scores were some of the highest I remember seeing in a single day. Of the 28 teams in action, 13 teams scored at least 5 runs and 7 teams were in double digits.

"It turns out this hasn’t happened since 2012, and it has only occurred on nine days over the last decade of baseball. One of those days in 2007 had eight teams break double digits, and all of these days occurred on days with 15 games being played. Yesterday, there were only 14 games played due to the postponement of the White Sox – Orioles game. Most of the occurrences happened earlier in the 2000s when the run environment in Major League Baseball was higher. Today’s low run environment makes days like yesterday less and less likely."

The games column should be labeled number of teams. It was only 6 games yesterday since the Nats and Braves did it to each other. I'm not taking the time to check but there are probably a few other days on that list where the same is true.

Eh, I gave in and checked just for 7/27/07 since it had 8 teams listed. There will double-digits scored in 6 games (A's and Mariners played each other, as did Padres and Astros). Interestingly enough, there were 2 other teams with 9 runs and one with 8. So lots of scoring that day overall.

I posted this on facebook yesterday:
Quote :
"Due to concerns for safety in Baltimore, Wednesday afternoon's baseball game between the Orioles and the White Sox will be closed to the public. This means that the game will still be played, but with no fans or spectators in the stands...
...making it no different than any other Orioles game."

Although a lot of folks liked it, a few now consider me an insensitive prick.

I don't get it. Both teams have had some rough years, but I'd bet the Orioles have outdrawn the Mets just as often as not over the last 20 years. They've also made the playoffs more, IIRC.

NY Mets have definitely out drawn Baltimore in attendance over the last decade and a half, but in the last 5 years neither have been the cornerstone for fan attendance. Even with the recent success Baltimore has only ranked midway in attendance numbers.

that being said i'd much rather see a game at Camden Yards than Citi Field.

last 15, you're probably right, keeping in mind that Camden was 8 years old by 2000 while the Mets both opened a new ballpark recently and hosted their final season in a historic venue that was much bigger than both Citi or Camden. but without looking at the numbers, I'd wager that the Orioles have higher average attendance over the last 20 and just as many seasons outdrawing the Mets as not.

also, agreed on Camden being awesome. taking the in-laws to their first game there this summer and looking forward to doing the ballpark tour while we're there.
