Holy crap. I've seen this stuff on menus, but I never really paid attention to what it was or how it was obtained. I'm by no means and animal activist, and I hate PETA, but damn. You basically force feed ducks to get their liver to a certain fat content before their slaughtered.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foie_gras[Edited on February 5, 2015 at 10:17 PM. 2/5/2015 11:42:40 PM
This looks like a good job by the chef, but not really that appetizing imohttp://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/82/Foie_gras_en_cocotte.jpgI'm from the south but I'm not even a big chicken liver fan. Let alone some mushy duck liver.

Every chef in the world says bans of this are literally worse than Hitler. The CA ban was recently overtuned, so I'm tempted to try it, but every fiber of my being says it's beyond evil. LOL OH WELL
2/6/2015 2:17:14 AM
Lol who doesn't know (hasn't known since at least early 2000s) what it is?Anyway, I only eat foie gras from gluttonous obese geese/ducks with no self-control that over feed on their own.

I don't eat plants because we kill other plants, grind them up and then use that to grow more plants. Its a unethical to steal seeds and use them to benefit man.I'm Krallum and I approved this message./]

I don't eat this shit, because the production process is so cruelhowever, I gather that the process at breeding-houses/slaughterhouses is pretty cruel too...not the actual act of slaughtering, but just the conditions leading up to ithowever, I haven't investigated slaughterhouses too much, because I want to be able to eat meat with a clean conscience
2/6/2015 11:11:38 AM
I understand that the meat industry is cruel by nature. But imo you can eat meat and still be opposed to excessive or unnecessary cruelty. And this is about as cruel as you can get. It's continual torture.

They should force feed the ducks liquor until their livers are so saturated with alcohol that they die. Then you could eat foie gras and get a nice buzz too ]

^^ have you ever been to any farms and slaughterhouses?I saw a video of some Muslim people setting a guy on fire. I guess all Muslims do that, because I saw it on a video. The vast majority of all the parts involved in animal agriculture are not cruel, but get bad reputations from the few individuals who do horrible things.Oh, and just so you know, many times in these "undercover" videos, the person being cruel was hired by an animal rights group such as Peta or HSUS.

uh oh...here we go grasping at straws again....some <> alllots <> most

The meat industry exists to provide us with a very necessary part of our diet. This is not a hit on the meat industry whatsoever. There's a difference between the general meat industry standards and practices that provide us with nutrition, and force feeding ducks before they die just for a frickin delicacy. To me there's just no real need for it. It's just unusually and unnecessarily cruel.

All dtownral does is try to bring me down a notch up in this place.I've been seeing it on menus for a long time, just never cared to investigate. When I go to places that have foie gras on the menu, I've typically decided before I get there what I'm going to get. Take Second Empire for example. We eat there from time to time, and there's usually something on the menu, usually the upstairs menu, not the tavern, that has foie gras. But since the menu changes regularly, I've usually checked it out online before I get there and have decided what I want.Besides, I'm pretty picky. Sorry dtownral, but I grew up in a pretty redneck town, and as a youth my parents never had the money to take me to four and five star restaurants. I'm glad your such a well traveled and worldly individual. You can continue dazzling us with your amazing experiences.
2/6/2015 9:06:47 PM
dtownral is a good person. he donates foie gras to the homeless in Moore Square.
2/6/2015 9:11:53 PM
I mean, does it make me an ignorant person because I don't have $120 to lay down on fancy dinners? And because I really wasn't curious about how this product was produced until I saw an article about it in the news? Shit, we cook at home 99% of the time these days. It happens when you grow up and have a family. We still go out to nice restaurants on special occasions, but I still wouldn't give foie gras a second look. I don't even like liver.
