So I think I did something to my knee. I stepped a bit funny a while back, and that seemed to kick it off, but I also had a motorcycle accident 3 months prior as well.It seems to hurt in the joint, on the outside behind and under the kneecap... I'm slightly worried I jacked up the meniscus. Its been about 3 weeks now, and while I can walk and everything okay, something like a one legged squat or stairs will put me in a lot of pain.Any advice/thoughts? Before anyone proposes just GO TO a DR, please include in that advice what type of doctor.

Go to the doctor, specifically an orthopedist. I've been to several in the area and really enjoy Raleigh Orthopedics. They did my ACL reconstruction and did a phenomenal job.[Edited on January 30, 2015 at 10:54 AM. Reason : ]

had an x-ray, other than verifying that there is no bone on bone contact, and that my bones are nice and round..... they recommend PT and a sports medicine specialist, said they may be able to give me more info... Give it another month and then if still in pain get another MRI.I went out and snoboarded today, it was slush, and heavy, was tough on the knee but it held up.

I've got a bum left knee, and I just proactively load up on an anti-inflammatory before skiing. I was really worried how I would hold up last week, but the knee held up. It's bad enough that I can't run without severe pain, so just glad I was able to ski.

Orthopedist, specifically a Board Certified Orthopedic Specialist who focuses his practice on knees. If you just pick an ortho, you could end up with someone who has a fellowship in hands, and that's not going to be your best bet. You'll definitely want an MRI if they suspect a meniscal tear. Any instability when you're walking/stair climbing? Or just pain? If you don't have instability, it may not involve your ligaments, but could just be inflammation. If that's the case, you may be able to get away with an injection or two to calm down the knee and not need anything drastic.

Just had a meniscus surgery to "trim it up" a couple of weeks ago. Pretty easy surgery and you are back on your feet the next day if that is all that is done. I also had some cartilage damage behind my kneecap, microfracture repair on that put me on crutches for 6 weeks. As for you diagnosis, it sounds a lot like the pain I was having. Knee was fine in most cases, but squatting caused pain and swelling. Finally got to the point where I was having to ice if I did any activity that required squatting or kneeling. They did an MRI and saw the meniscus issue easily. A flap of it would fall into the joint every so often, resulting in the pain.
