Just came to post this.Get ready to go fuck yourselves TWC
1/23/2015 5:08:59 PM
It's confirmed.
1/23/2015 5:32:03 PM
RTP only or are we looking at all of Raleigh?
1/23/2015 6:20:05 PM
another link giving more of a quasi-confirmationhttp://wraltechwire.com/sources-google-commits-to-bringing-fiber-to-triangle-/14382720/

I really hope this makes it out to the surrounding communities like Cary, Apex, HS, WF, Garner, etc.
1/25/2015 9:20:55 AM
yeah, i wonder what the likelihood is that i'll see it in my neighborhood...we're off a "main" (ie. busy and congested at rush hour ), but the neighborhood is a dead-end cul-de-sacbut it's within the raleigh city limits

Announcement at 1 pm today. Governor attending and will be streaming on WRAL.

please morrisville/davis drive. Not sure which matters for me since I am surrounded by Cary but technically in morrisville. Davis drive in front of my house is maintained by Cary, water sewer done by cary ...

also $120/month for internet+tv or $FREE per month for 5mbps/1mbpsI don't need a $70-$80 Gigabit service but I'm hoping that it causes TWC to lower their plan costs.
1/27/2015 12:25:55 PM
I don't particularly "need" it either
1/27/2015 12:37:26 PM
yeah, I don't need a GB but if I can pay less than I am now for my 30Mb/s and TV you damn well better believe I will. All things considered even if it cost more I might be tempted just so I can not give money to TWC.
1/27/2015 12:44:34 PM
we spend about $45/month for 20/2 but were about to up that to 30/5 for about $55. I'm not sure if $15-$25 extra is worth it just to say fuck you to TWCi'm curious about how the customer service is in areas it's already deployed. I know for their consumer products Google has never had the greatest customer service (although in this case the bar set by TWC/Comcast is much much lower than in other markets)
1/27/2015 12:54:05 PM
Stream is live and starting.
1/27/2015 1:03:45 PM
related: McCrory sent a letter supporting the TWC/Comcast merger

Sad that I found out about this through a SlickDeals deal alert rather than from the email list I signed up for with Google. Hopefully not a sign of customer service to come. That said, I'd grab my ankles for gigabit uncapped.
1/27/2015 1:56:05 PM
I'll have an erection during my call to cancel TWC for this.

I'm sadly be waving to all of you with my stupid TWC connection in Zebulon. Tears will be shed.

the only website that I have problems with is this one, even YouTube doesn't buffer for me. There are 2 people in my household, when do we need more than 30Mbps?[Edited on January 27, 2015 at 2:58 PM. Reason : .]

TV package seems competitive, but a lot of us already ditched cable

But if it wasn't clear, I'd totally pay $80 for gigabit]
I would pay $120/mo for gigabit but I am in Southport. 120 miles too far away.

Also if you have a PS4, your streaming experience when streaming PS3 games will benefit from higher bandwidth. When Oculus and HoloLens are out, i'm sure doing a real-time VR teleconference will want more bandwidth. If you use iCloud or CloudDrive, or want to do any online backup services, having as much bandwidth as possible makes this work a lot better.
1/28/2015 4:22:06 AM
I'd finally upgrade my 1.5 mbps.
1/28/2015 12:19:16 PM
1/28/2015 1:10:20 PM
how is google about caring what you download? I don't know anyone who has gotten in trouble on TWC
1/28/2015 2:20:41 PM
^^Yeah the whole DVR thing is a ripoff ($10 device rental, $15 "service" ) that I'd just assume drop but I'm keeping the girlfriend happy .Thought about getting a Tivo but wouldn't likely save me money since I'd still have to rent a cable card and pay for their service making it a wash. I also considered building a DVR box and getting a cable card tuner but I'd still end up spending a decent amount on that.Problem is a fundamentally like cable tech over the alternatives. I don't have a lot of faith in satellite tv and while Uverse is fine and dandy, I'm not big about the web/TV bandwidth being shared and the limitations that having that shared connection can impose and when I spec'ed out a similar config to what I have now it wouldn't really save me too much.Once the Sling TV gets a little bit more mature and a few more channels I'll probably consider jumping over to that for my TV since most of what I care about is sports.

1/28/2015 2:44:47 PM
is the google fiber a limited time offer? why would you pay more than you need for more service than you need instead of upgrading later when you need it?
1/28/2015 3:08:30 PM
So when will Charlotte and Raleigh have this shit operational? 2017?
1/28/2015 3:26:15 PM
i was under the impression that construction could start as early as april...i have no idea how long it will take before they roll out the first leg of service, but i wouldn't be surprised if Q4/2015 or Q1/2016 sees some neighborhoods with active service
1/28/2015 3:37:26 PM
So we don't get this in Wake Forest!??!!?? WTF!!!!
1/28/2015 3:57:04 PM
wake forest never participated in the earlier rounds
1/28/2015 4:04:40 PM
1/28/2015 4:13:29 PM
Yea I wonder where they are planning to start from too, as I am right on the western city limits of Carrboro, so I'm probably not going to be top of the list.
1/28/2015 7:20:54 PM
Apparently the 20/2 TWC plan is becoming 100/10 and the 30/5 is becoming 200/20, higher plans are becoming 300/20Upgrades should start later this year (probably the same time is Google starts rolling out)
