One of the guys who killed him pleaded guilty, and will likely get a sentence of no more than 27 years. He's 17 now, so he'll be out by at most when he is 44. For murder.

Dude survived Okinawa, one of the worst battles of the Pacific Theater, only to be beaten to death in the twilight of his years by a couple of thugs.

I guess my point was not race or the fact that he was unarmed, but that the offender was only going to get at most 27 years for First. Degree. Murder.

Isn't that how plea deals work though?

you get a less harsh sentence in exchange for saving everyone the time, heartache, trouble, and $$ of a trial. this was obviously something worked out between the defendant, his attorney, and the prosecutor.

The plea deal was that he lost 2 other charges EMCE. He is still on the books for first degree murder, and in Washington that carries a 27 year max sentence.

also, being a veteran doesn't automatically make you a good person

i'm tired of the veteran worship in this country

fuck veterans

why isn't the media digging up all the bad shit this old fuck did in his life like they do when the victim is black?

let's hear about all the times Delbert Belton beat his wife

or how he was a pussy and hid for most of "one of the worst battles of the Pacific Theater"

also - according to Belton's friend Natalie Flom he frequently drank beer

Research increasingly shows that people age out of violent crime and that lifetime incarcerations don't really benefit anyone.

they punish motherfuckers who deserve to be punished to the max. and that benefits the families of victims, because they take satisfaction in it. and it benefits many other people, for the same reason.

I'm okay with the main purpose of prison being to fucking punish people.

In the last years, I've grown older, gotten married, made money, had a beautiful life and look forward to waking up every day.

That is what life is all about.

If you kill someone, you go to jail.

because that is what justice is

because you took away the life of others

They can't wake up and live their lives anymore because of criminal acts.

This is the purpose of an organized and just society. It's called deterrence.

time changes people. Age changes people. Life is for real, and killing people is unacceptable.

The reward in life is waking up every day and knowing you make the right choices and continuing to do so.

(One of the victims in the above referenced instance was also a veteran.)

Society needs to be more peaceful and incorporative. We need to welcome instead of hating.

Less road rage, less people being dicks, less insults on TV as entertainment, less mindless animation and violence in the movie theaters.

People are litigious, violent, and ugly because they are influenced by too many outside sources trying to promote violence and destruction.

I reflect back five years ago when I got back from Europe; the message of destruction and pushiness all around the USA was very apparent, and I realized that I had just been conditioned to always hear about sex/violence/drugs/cruelty every single place you look around here.

I speak for myself because I suppose the critical element I omitted is that living a daily life with small pleasures is the satisfaction of not being locked up.

Waking up in the morning in your own bed and enjoying your freedoms, the small things, and I think our culture as a country could improve if more people were grateful for the small things.

We need:

- more focus and appreciation on our military
- enhanced and detailed reporting of our overseas servicemembers
- less focus on potential protests that are not even protests
- a greater awareness of the criminal justice system
- enhanced civics education
- greater national identity
- improved economy
- steadily low fuel prices low
- less EPA regulations
- we need to bring back manufacturing real fucking cars in America
- less artificial violence

you said

Quote :
"That is what life is all about"

and it's not your place to decree what life is all about.

in fact, for some people, life is all about being locked up in jail: that's its purpose and that's the best way to live it.

just sayin'...I really don't care for sweeping generalizations to severely individualistic questions, like "that's what life is all about" or "I've found the answer."

The offender's offenses during his life sentence are a mosaic of human suffering. He killed a vet and then spent the rest of his time.....(courtesy of NC DOC):

Whether or not life is all about one thing or the other, it's a point of divergence, a frame of reference.

I say as an illustration:
think of where you were when the Tailgate shooting happened and then think of where you are now.

- The sum of what was accomplished between 9/5/04 and 1/9/15 and compare it to the 14 acts of a disobedient prisoner; his life's work so far-
The differential speaks volumes to me about what life is all about, but it is obviously not the only source of information to draw conclusions. It is one illustration of the passage of time and life overall, at least to me.

yeah, it definitely sucks to be locked up in prison and it really cramps your ability achieve goals/dreams. I was really objecting to an incidental point. also, that list is fucking depressing.

^ Yeah man I hit that point of appreciating the depressing list and conjured up, "well shit life is all about being happy"

So I guess that is why I surmise just waking up in your own bed and living your life right and appreciating the little things is what really matters and what life is all about for me.

I was just saying in the broader sense I think more people need to know that, and our society could afford to be more reflective in that manner and think about life and just slow the fuck down and start being nicer to each other.

One of the things.... and I guess this goes to a deeper level

one more thought.....

[pure speculation]
concerning the OP, the 17 year old kid may not have actually "beaten" this guy like super smash bros. He may have just shoved him, i.e., strong arm-robbery or gimme your phone type scenario [/pure speculation]

and he may have knocked the 88 year old guy down and he hit his head and died

The fucking kid will spend the next 27 years of his life for something like that.

I don't have the answers and nobody else does either.

Now the flip side:

We're all 20s, 30s, 40s

What if we don't know it yet, but it is our destiny to turn 90 and have some fucking kid who won't even be born until we're 83 years old beat the shit out of us and cause us to die in the same manner????
Epic thoughts ITT

you'd feel the same way if that was your granddad/dad?

all of you that are saying you don't care. you for sure do. you don't want to live that long if you are in good health and can get around?

if you kill a person, any person, for any reason, due to being mean/a dumbass/ any criminal act, you should be out of society forever. you took something away that can never be replaced, and in no doubt affected more than one life in the worst of ways.

what kind of scum even shoves an old man? who cares what color he is. he is a thug/dumbass/mouthbreather/ all of it. There are too many people in this country as is, why do we need people that harm others?
