It is playable, but there are some issues connecting to a new game after one is over. It is fun, but like I said it will take some getting used to. The Spartan abilities seems cool but the action is too fast to really get to use them like the ground pound. The shoulder charge is fun though.

Don't let 343 fool you.

They will say ANYTHING to get people to buy the game.

Coming out tomorrow. Anyone picking this up?

I have it in my Gamefly queue, but don't have the interest in purchasing a copy until I play it.

really wish they hadnt added special abilities to the halo franchise. i know it was desperation to keep people buying sequels, but i preferred simplicity

should i buy this?

I'm waiting for some reviews and to see how they handle matchmaking this go around. Considering what happened with the 'collection' last year...

so I played til about 5 am last night here's my initial thoughts:

I loved it! it handles so well. smooth gameplay almost on par with my first love, Destiny. Campaign is interesting so far. I like how you can pick members of the fireteam based on their loadout. It was pretty funny scrambling in between missions and making someone play Linda instead of Chief or Fred. It feels a bit easier than old legendary modes but the team I was running with was full of halo fanboys to the extreme so that might be why we didn't struggle the entire time. We made it to mission 7 on Legendary before we switched to multiplayer.

multiplayer: want to load games super fast? get this game. The wait time in between games was like 10 seconds. I felt like I was playing the speed team deathmatch mode from COD games. it feels really good too. ADS is now left trigger which feels so natural to me. We only played slayer and one game of SWAT but it was all good fun and I can't wait to get on and play more.

disclaimer: if you want barebones halo 1/2 like dayyys of oldddd (s/o to my boy variks) then this MIGHT NOT be the game for you. there are small additions to character movements/abilities like a boost which can go any direction, a smash/ground pound attack, an "angel of light" perk where ADS in the air suspends you briefly. but yeah I love the game so far. definitely feels fresh compared to grinding so many god damn hours on HM Oryx this past weekend.

I'd imagine a review would be favorable if you compare it to a game like Destiny.

Metacritic has it at 84 as of now, so I'm guessing about on par with Halo 4. Sort of fun multiplayer you play for a few weeks, then never touch again because there is no competitive aspect to pursue like in the old Halos. I heard the campaign sucks but I never judge a shooter off that when 95% of my time will be in multiplayer.

I think it is safe to say the days of standard competitive Halo have been dead for awhile, so I don't really think it is fair to compare 343's attempts to that of Halo 1-3. As it's own game, based on the Beta I think it may be worth trying. I just think it's stupid when people say "HALO IS BACK" and this game hardly resembles anything like Halo.

there is a competitive aspect - you play 10 games in any arena playlist and you get slotted into a division. the divisons are bronze/silver/gold/platinum/diamond. each division has a 5-6 tier and you move up the more games you win or down as you lose. once you hit diamond, you make the final push to Onyx and then Champion which is the top 200 players or something ridiculous.

you also have your overall CSR which gains xp from ALL gain types which unlocks characters and stuff like that the same in Halo 4.

haters gonna hate though - you don't have your regular 1-50 skill rankings for playlist but it's essentially the same thing, without the numbers

edit: oh yeah I played about 5 games of warzone which is great fun - 12 vs 12 zone captures essentially. It's the better Big Team Battle which I was never a huge fan of. you obtain requisition packs and can use them once you rank up in each individual game. it gives you more flexibility on what weapons you want to use and can earn.

Speaking from Halo 4 experience:

Longer kill times, no bullet travel, increased aim assist, random weapon drops, reticle bloom, smaller skill gap, no 1-50 rank.

It's directed towards the more casual fans, as a COD-Halo hybrid, now with microtransactions, of course. Essentially a Microsoft-demanded cash grab using the Halo brand name, which is what we have had since ODST/Reach/Halo 4.

I thought the beta was fun, it played like a Crysis clone with insane aim-assist. Just not classic Halo, which as we know from game sales and online population, is all players ever wanted.

^I actually feel like it plays like a faster more modern Halo 1.

The weapon balance seems good so far, Pistol and AR are good so you don't have to have a BR/DMR to be successful. So far I have almost no experience of just dying and wondering why or how which is a big pet peeve of mine and something that recent Halo game have been bad about (I fall over dead after one shot when I was hitting him with straight headshots?!?).

Lag seems very low at the moment. Way better map variety and design than Halo 4 so far. It is more accessible but I don't see that as a bad thing for a console FPS where I'm looking to have some fun, if you want hardcore, speed and aiming gameplay then go play counterstrike or the like on PC. 'Course that could just be the fact that I'm old now and will never have the time or reflexes to be truly awesome at any game ever again.

agreeing with this. I don't see it catering to more casual people as I had a few people in my party who were just playing halo until COD game out or for fun and they were going like 1-17. The average/consistent halo player is better than most other FPS players on COD or BF or Destiny - not to say halo players are all better but the I feel like the popularity of COD and other games definitely waters down the competition.

I got placed in Onyx division on SWAT somehow even with a pretty mediocre KD of 1.1 and I was getting absolutely DESTROYED. I'm def more of a Platinum ranking kind of player.

^ I'm not the biggest fan of the maps so far - I love coliseum though and the warzone maps are fun

The perceived speed aspect is from the Crysis 2-esque abilities and movement. In terms of kill times though I'm assuming the H5 BR is still a 5 shot kill minimum as opposed the 4-shot like H2 and H3?

^ I imagine the weapon damage rates have been adjusted because of the adjustments to the shield mechanics, but it does cause some cognitive dissonance where, you'll shoot the expected number of times and then just stop because your muscle memory says they should be dead.

They really need a social slayer or something that isn't ranked besides warzone. My buddy is Diamond/Onyx type of player and I don't do so hot in that range.

I'm loving this so far. The game is overall just really really smooth. No weird bugs that take forever to get into a game, no games randomly crapping out or massive lag like you'd see early on in nearly every single COD game, etc.

Valid criticism isn't "Hating". This game isn't even in the top 10 most played on Xbox Live right now, it is on pace to have the same popularity of Halo 4, which is sad.

Not saying it is a bad game necessarily, just that it obviously isn't comparable to Halo 1-3 in terms of success or popularity.

Way better than Halo 4, way way way, still not good enough to keep me playing it that much.
