http://www.wral.com/more-than-half-of-raleigh-s-cabbies-to-go-on-strike-nye/14315533/Plan on making other ways to get home or have a DD. That or use what they are protesting, Uber.
12/29/2014 9:02:12 PM
Getting a cab on NYE is impossible anyway, strike or no strike
12/29/2014 9:37:33 PM
If you use Uber be prepared for a ridiculous surge charge - like 6 or 7 times the normal rate.

I've got a station wagon. How much do you want to pay me for a ride home? I live in Durham and was going to head downtown Raleigh. Can comfortably fit three more adults.
12/30/2014 12:07:45 AM
Uber is just the worst fucking company ever.
12/30/2014 12:10:51 AM
I am getting a keg and having people over, no way I have to figure out how to get home or worry with how much its gonna cost.
12/30/2014 12:21:04 AM
Well let's just say that if you do have to figure out how to get home, you'll probaby have bigger things to worry about.

What's funny is that my neighbor drives for Uber and he loves it lol. I signed up to drive for them, though I probably won't actually do it.
12/30/2014 8:13:37 AM
Can I do uber with a two seater? I'll put up a divider on the center console, though. I don't want to talk to you fuckers.
12/30/2014 8:17:50 AM
^^ i used lyft for the first time a couple of weeks ago and the guy said he drove both them and uber...said he loves it and quit his "real" job to do it full time (apparently his wife makes good money, which would make sense considering he was driving a 2014 fusion hybrid)he said he preferred lyft to uber, though

You couldn't get a cab if you needed one in Raleigh any other NYE, so I don't see the big deal.
12/30/2014 10:53:13 AM
Man I wish I could sign up as an Uber driver just for this one night. Make $$$.
12/30/2014 1:11:40 PM
If I am approved to drive by NYE I'm gonna drive that night for the lulz, and prolly won't drive anymore after that.

i've used uber before and it was super convenient, but i really wonder what they are going to do when there is an incident of violence or crime while one of their drivers has passengers from the app. be it by the driver or the passenger.
12/30/2014 4:33:26 PM
...because Taxis, public transportation, air transit, and ferries are all crime freeI'm Krallum and I approved this message./]

Uber Crime? Ridiculous proposal. We all know that Craigslist Killers stick exclusively to Craigslist. It's a branding issue and a matter of serial killer preference, really. They have to stay true to their roots. Why would they ever venture into expanding their killings into the Uber realm?
12/30/2014 4:49:19 PM
The comments on New Raleigh's Facebook page are lolworthy.
12/30/2014 6:15:13 PM
Probably referring to unions

Fuck the taxis. I could not even find one on Hillsborough Hike night once, which is not really an area wide thing. They want to work office hours and not be online at night when drunken bar patrons need rides. Most cab companies phones were ringing unanswered like they were closed. What the cab companies should have been doing was creating a locate and dispatch app that was easy to use, they failed to evolve and are now getting shitted on. No one has to tell uber drivers to take a bath or clean their fucking car because the user reviews will tell the story and uber will ban the driver. Also, what exactly is preventing these cab drivers from putting the uber app on their phone and doing uber work in a private vehicle to take advantage of surge pricing.

Interesting ideas. I have heard complaints that many Uber drivers don't often make a fair wage, but was not aware of the other issues. I'll have to check it out. In the meantime the only safe bet is to hire a rickshaw driver and tip really well.
12/31/2014 12:21:04 AM
Its like a fucking conservative utopia. No rules, females and workers getting screwed (literally in some cases), prices jump up to complete assrape levels arbitrarily, drivers can get fired for no reason, drivers get no benefits or insurance. Here is the other side of it though. Municipalities have been fucking over cab drivers for years, charging them exorbitant fees to operate for licenses, medallions, and restricting the shit out of them. Very little of that stuff actually benefits the customer or end user, but cabs have to pay to play. What you often get is a dirty ass taxi and a driver that does not take any pride in your experience when riding in a regulated cab. No one is reviewing the cab company or driver. Uber drivers have no set schedule, they can work whenever they want, they can stop for the day whenever they want, they own all trade tools. They really do fit the description of an independent contractor. The surge pricing probably sucks to people that get stuck paying it, but the other option is try to find a regulated taxi when its impossible to do so. There is probably room in the market for both solutions or a little of each. If I went to a large city I would rather just take a licensed cab from the airport (bigger trunk, easy to see who is legit), but when getting home from the bar drunk in Raleigh uber seems like a better option. They need to come out with an Uber X2 option for late night kind of like that Safe Ride Home company that is in Raleigh. They could show up with two drivers and take the passengers and car home for whoever called them! https://www.saferidehomenc.com/
12/31/2014 1:06:04 AM
complaints over surge pricing would be more valid if they didn't make you confirm that you realize that surge pricing is going onpretty easy to not use the service during the middle of it
12/31/2014 8:17:27 AM
12/31/2014 8:19:09 AM
yeahyou have to confirm that you are ok with surge pricing before they send you a driver. I'm pretty sure that you also have to enter a confirmation code as well, but I'm not positive.
12/31/2014 8:29:27 AM
The app says "surge pricing is in effect" and then 2x, 3x, whatever it is in massive font. You then have to actually type "2x" or "3x" whatever it is back to the app before they send a driver.
12/31/2014 8:32:23 AM
you have to agree like 3 times during surge pricing. if you accept and take the ride it's your own damn fault.
12/31/2014 8:35:20 AM
^, ^^ Then what could anyone possibly complain about? It makes everything I have seen on it seem ridiculous.
12/31/2014 8:38:17 AM
also Uber just sent out an email to users basically re-explaining surge rates and to expect them across the board on NYE. ^exactly]
12/31/2014 8:38:38 AM
12/31/2014 8:39:05 AM
i could give a shit about surge pricing. it's the idea that uber thinks they are completely without liability when one of their drivers rapes/attacks/etc one of their passengers (or vice versa really). The whole "independent contractor" thing is such bullshit.
12/31/2014 9:26:13 AM
^^That app just came out this month. How long have smart phones been around? They should have had that app 3 years ago, not as a "we better get our shit together" reaction to Uber and Lyft...
12/31/2014 12:20:59 PM
12/31/2014 12:29:13 PM
So I guess if the taxi driver shot a passenger, the taxi company is off the hook as well.
12/31/2014 12:54:24 PM
on a treadmill?
12/31/2014 12:59:33 PM
The whole independent contractor classification is the most commonly abused thing in american business to circumvent all kinds of labor laws and taxes.
12/31/2014 1:32:20 PM
^ If the laws allow it then why not?
12/31/2014 1:36:11 PM
Isn't this like a retailer skipping black friday? ?
12/31/2014 1:37:46 PM
Most taxi companies are shady. We know this. What I don't like is the idea that because Uber is technology-driven, it's somehow different.Uber has all of the problems of a normal shady cab company, plus a misogynist corporate stance, and a reputation for taking advantage of customers whenever possible. To top it off, they skirt even more taxes and regulations by claiming they're not a cab company. Then, on top of that unfair competition, there's surge pricing. Yes, you have to agree to surge pricing. There's no bait and switch. That doesn't mean it's not greedy and wrong.
