So I started out wanting one of those on-faucet water filters, but it seems like there are far better solutions out there. Any ideas? Have you set up any water filtration in your house?

the water dispenser in my fridge has a filter. That's pretty much it.

Unless you have particularly hard water that's creating other problems, why bother?

I have a fish tank, so it'd be nice to filter the water some before adding it...also I make tea pretty often and using the fridge filter for that is a pain.

I knew it! ha. I was going to post that my friends who have fish tanks have done various things.

I have one friend that setup a nice system underneath his kitchen sink with a bypass. Pretty handy.

talking about going RO? or just whole-house filter? Water quality test is priority #1, then go from there to determine the necessity for other equipment

i've got a small RO under the sink. works fine i guess. i'm on a well. also have a whole-house system similar to a softener in the garage that serves to take the brown color out of our well water. it's all from Culligan and came with the house.

for the last 3 years of my cichlid's life, I used water from the fridge spout with no problems

my parents bought this counter-top filtration system from walmart (a little more expensive than the Britas iirc) that comes with a water tester. water from my tap (Concord) was around 65 ppm, water from the fridge around 45 ppm, and water from the system 0 ppm.

I put in a sink bypass with a two stage filter. First is the big tube filter, good for ~5 years and has a high flow rate. Then it goes into a fancy filter, basically like a brita pitcher but with pressurized lines. That then feeds under the house and back up to my fridge dispenser (the fridge has never been hooked up to a water line previously).

Probably don't need the double filter setup, but I figured it'll extend the life of the fancy ($Texas) filter. Took about 3 hours to install everything, run the piping through the crawl space, drill the holes and purge the filters.

^ Do you mind sharing model numbers of those filters? I'm on well water with a Culligan softener but the smell isn't great and color isn't great either.

This thread read my mind. I'm super paranoid of drinking the tap water near camp lejune (re: mad sketchy).

First off, what's a good water quality tester? I'm not scared of doing RO, but I want some data first as far as knowing what the contents of the water are. I read this one thing that said my area is extremely low risk for dissolved solids. https://www.zerowater.com/

I want to know about chemicals, particulates, etc. If a Brita is all I need- awesome. But if it's so bad that RO is the only substantial option, then I gotta start makin' moves.

I'm really waiting for UV-C leds to come down in price... then i'm doing a 3 stage system with a a UV disinfectant stage for that 190 %... or just 99.9% microorganism neuter.

I've got one of the few wells left in the cary area, at least for homes in corporate limits.

I have to filter it where it comes into the house. Currently I just have a whole house filter, medium sized, but I am considering swapping it for a two stage system.

If I run the water on the outsite spigot too long, it starts pumping in the sediment and quickly clogs up the filter. A pre-filter to screen and drop the sediment could help in that regard.
