The republicans on Fox News think he deserved death for selling untaxed cigs, even though republicans hate taxes.

Sadly comical how this all works.

It is tough to think about this case without getting emotional.

It makes you want to cry.

We need reform in this country, but it needs to be done in the proper manner and without destroying the foundations of cooperation and living as an advanced people of law and order. Orchestrated protests and people attempting to profit off this are more evil than the underlying evil that caused this.

Everybody wins. The dude is not charge, hefty sum of money for the family...

I think I don't even worth a fraction of that after death

At 1.50 a pack in a city of over 8million, I'd take that bet. The city probably makes 6mill a week.

This is comical it weren't so tragic. Killing a guy for selling loosies then paid out 5.9 millions. Food for thought, what is the current U.S. soldier death benefit?

maybe these cops should focus on corner stores selling entire packs of cigarettes smuggled from Virginia that fund possible threats.

Oh wait they just gave away their budget.

If we didn't have a government to manage that aspect of society, I could see something like "racism insurance" cropping up in a libertarian fantasy land, where private mercenaries go around "investigating" racism and shaking down business that increase their liability for their minority clients.

Quote :
"The city spent $732 million on judgments and claims in fiscal 2014, an increase of $208 million from fiscal 2013.

Last year, Mr. Stringer’s office reached an agreement with David Ranta, who was wrongfully convicted of murder and imprisoned for more than 22 years. Mr. Ranta had sought $150 million; he agreed to accept $6.4 million.

Mr. Stringer also settled with the family of Jerome Murdough, a homeless veteran who died in an overheated cell at Rikers Island. His family had sought $25 million; the settlement amount was $2.25 million.

In 2014, the city opted to settle a lawsuit by five men who had their conviction of a 1989 beating and rape of a female jogger in Central Park thrown out. The city agreed to pay $41 million, an about-face from the administration of Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The Bloomberg administration had spent 10 years fighting the lawsuit."

So they will pay out millions of dollars, but will not fire any govt employees for the conduct that led to being sued....

Why would they? It's not like any of it actually came out of their pockets.

There's no impetus for change when there is no direct impact to the police or politicians. Until we start eliminating some of the protections like qualified immunity that cops and prosecutors have and start allowing them to be sued directly this behavior will not change.

Now it is up to the city's police commissioner whether the officer will keep his job.
