http://i.imgur.com/4PN1MZp.jpg (huge pic)6/2(1+2)=1I'm not sure how I would have done so well if I was confused about basic order of operations. According to the comments on reddit the answer is 9. I am confused now, like when I found out its OK to put one space after a period instead of two. Is there really a difference between ÷ and /? http://www.reddit.com/r/WTF/comments/2i03tm/we_had_this_argument_for_hours_and_when_we/

6/2=6*.56*.5*3=9

6/2(1+2)first you do the addition in the parentheses6/2(3)then you divide 3(3)then you multiply9

^that's misleading though because you don't multiply before you divide. You do them at the same time, left to right
10/1/2014 8:37:30 PM
^but if you divide first you will still get same answer
10/1/2014 8:38:25 PM
This isn't really about order of operations. It's about how calculators work.

1. Parentheses2. Exponents3. Multiplication or Division4. Addition or Subtractionjust for anyone who is confused.]

^^^if you multiply first you WON'T get the same answer in this instance
10/1/2014 8:40:05 PM
^do what
10/1/2014 8:42:11 PM
if you multiply before you divide, instead of doing it left to right, you'd have:6/2(1+2)=6/2(3)=6/6=1=wrong
10/1/2014 8:44:16 PM
Proper use of parentheses would help eliminate any confusion
10/1/2014 8:47:52 PM
^^3 times 1/2 times 6 [Edited on October 1, 2014 at 8:52 PM. Reason : or 6 * 1/2 * 3]
10/1/2014 8:49:51 PM
my way you don't have to convert division to multiplying fractions thoughyou just add the numbers in the parentheses, then do the rest of the problem left to right6 divided by 2 times 3[Edited on October 1, 2014 at 8:53 PM. Reason : .]
10/1/2014 8:52:20 PM
^but your way yields incorrect answer
10/1/2014 8:53:38 PM
no it doesnt6 divided by 2 = 33 times 3 = 9why do you need to add a 0.5 into the equation for no reason?

A.6______ = 12(1+2)B.6__ (1+2) = 92And 6 ÷ 2(1+2) = 9, but it looks like the Casio interprets the division symbol as a fraction like A., so it's also 1.Either way, it's a nonissue. If you're trying to do something that matters, you'd make sure you used enough notation so that it wasn't ambiguous.^^He and moron are saying you could multiply by 1/2 (as if that's not the same thing as dividing by 2).[Edited on October 1, 2014 at 8:59 PM. there are plenty of ways to do math and get the correct answeri just happen to think my way is easier since you don't have to convert to fractions/decimals for no reason
10/1/2014 9:01:15 PM
is this a troll thread?Other than (1+2) PEDMAS, left-to-right, etc. don't matter.6 * (1/2) * (1+2) = 9
10/1/2014 9:02:07 PM
LET'S ADD A 0.5 TO THE EQUATION EVEN THOUGH THERE'S NO NEED TO
10/1/2014 9:03:47 PM
where did the fraction touch you TT?
10/1/2014 9:04:50 PM
it's just an extra step that's unnecessarythere's no need to convert 6 divided by 2 into 6 times 0.5[Edited on October 1, 2014 at 9:08 PM. Reason : Bridget gets it ]

I'm also surprised by the number of people who are drawn to the 1/2 in there.6/2 = 3 to me right away, not 6 * (1/2) and then 3.[Edited on October 1, 2014 at 9:08 PM. Reason : What he^ said. I'm slow.]

I remember something about how you are supposed to multiply the number next to the parenthesis into the parenthesis first, because 2(x+2) would be 2x+4. If you were to do the 6/2 first you would get 3x+6[Edited on October 1, 2014 at 9:19 PM. Reason : would you guys do it differently if it was 6/2(x+2)?]
10/1/2014 9:13:36 PM
distribution has nothing to do with that problem. there are no variables.
10/1/2014 9:17:57 PM
how is it not the same thing though?
10/1/2014 9:19:33 PM
it is solved left to right. you divide before you multiplyand before any of that, you solve the addition in the parenthesessee previous posts]
10/1/2014 9:20:04 PM
^still same answer right to left3* 1/2 * 6[Edited on October 1, 2014 at 9:22 PM. Reason : you can put them in any order you want. ]
10/1/2014 9:21:24 PM
Jesus, some of you are just fucking retarded
10/1/2014 9:21:48 PM
yeah i get that when there are no variables you do parenthesis first. make that 1 an x and simplify, then plug in 1 for x and you get 1. I'm obviously confused. It's been too long.
10/1/2014 9:23:58 PM
you're overthinking it. We're not solving for x. We're just doing a basic math problem with a real number answer.
10/1/2014 9:25:17 PM
I'm not saying solve for x, just simplify the equation statement and then replace x with 1. Is the answer still 9 to you guys? Or do you agree that you distribute the 2 into the parenthesis?[Edited on October 1, 2014 at 9:29 PM. Reason : d]

This is a pretty basic equation. Surprised to see so much arguing about it. Left to right, do the shit in the parentheses first. Not complicated.[Edited on October 1, 2014 at 9:36 PM. Reason : stupid auto correct]
