Does anyone know of a legal way to watch this in NC or can someone teach me Italian real quick? From a few zip codes I tried I don't think it is playing anywhere in NC (I tried Asheville, Hickory, Charlotte, Raleigh, and Wilmington) all came up with no showtimes. I tried NY just to make sure it is playing in the US and of course multiple options popped right up. Now I'm not leaving NC to see this movie haha, does anyone know of a legal way to watch this movie? I have no problem paying, but if they make it impossible, then well...

See where it says "(Limited)?"

That means the Sept. 26th release was NYC/LA only.

Depending on how it does, release will spread. We'll likely see it in a month or two.

Yes I understand Limited, but I didn't know it was Limited to only two cities in the entire US.

My question is how is an Italian Web Rip floating around, but there is no way to watch it online in English legally?

BTW, don't bother with that, it's dubbed in Italian, I was hoping for English w/ Italian subtitles.

Limited release almost always means NYC/LA. Sometimes they add Chicago.

Well considering it is Andre I checked ATL and it is playing there also.

Surely there is somewhere that shows all cities without having to search zip codes. However I haven't found a website dedicated for this movie which seems a little odd. I guess once it is more widely available it will get one.

I'm sure Ridley doesn't want too many people knowing about it until they see how it does.

Edit: I guess this is the closest thing to a "website" this movie has currently: http://www.darko.com/film_allisbymyside.html

Also saw this interview with Ridley on the film: http://www.rollingstone.com/movies/news/jimi-all-is-by-my-side-john-ridley-talks-about-his-hendrix-biopic-20140313

Seriously, I remember hearing about this a loooong time ago.

I recently heard that the Hendrix estate wouldn't grant rights to the songs, so there are no original songs in the movie?

It's not about if they will grant rights it is about the amount they ask for. If you knew anything about Hendrix you would know he didn't have a lot of original material ready at this point of his life. To be clear we are talking about pre-Monterey Pop (the first time most people ever heard Hendrix), (1966-1967).

At Monterey Pop (where this film should end right before he starts) Jimi played:

Can You See Me? (Original)
Purple Haze (Original)

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
Monterey
Killing Floor
Foxy Lady (Original)
Like a Rolling Stone
Rock Me Baby
Hey Joe (Original)
The Wind Cries Mary (Original)

Wild Thing

(Totaling 49 Minutes)

I count 5 originals out of his debut to an insanely large festival. However Hendrix would own rights to the all of the original recordings from Monterey, because he played them (along with Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell).

Uh...that's not how rights work.

Warner Brothers initially owned the rights to the Monterey recordings. The current version that exists is produced by Sony, but there's also a Universal version in the same packaging. It's possible that Experience Hendrix has acquired the masters in the intervening years since the performance was first released in 1970 as a split LP with Otis Redding's set from the festival, but Hendrix most certainly didn't own the recordings at the time they were made.

Considering when Jimi died and when it was released on vinyl, it is obvious I meant that even though they are not originals, they would still be considered Hendrix recordings. Obviously he doesn't/didn't have direct blanket rights over his first large scale debut...

Also Criterion has the best version of the mentioned recording and it comes on two Blu-Rays, although the main one has very little Hendrix. The Monterey Pop Blu-Ray and Jimi Plays Monterey & Shake! Otis At Monterey.

http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-Complete-Monterey-Pop-Festival-Blu-ray/99304/

I didn't know we were going to have a dick measuring contest over copyright knowledge or I would have been more specific. Uh...

Lol I did say "to the all", that should have been a hint I was just speaking in general terms of "ownership".

I thought musicians got every single dollar from their recordings, are you telling me that isn't true??? WTF!!?!?!?

Now wait, Andre is not going to get a 1:1 ratio payment based on his time on screen?? Please give me knowledge.

Well shit, look at how well Google works:

"The film does not include any songs written by Hendrix, as the filmmakers' request to use them was denied by Experience Hendrix LLC (Hendrix's estate). Instead, the film – set in London in 1966 and 1967 – will include the songs that Hendrix performed during those years, shortly before the release of his debut album, Are You Experienced.[2]"

"Last month, Experience Hendrix LLC, which oversees the Hendrix estate, issued a statement regarding the movie, which has been in production for four months. The company, which is run by Hendrix's sister Janie, said that it "has made it known many times in the past that no such film, were it to include original music or copyrights created by Jimi Hendrix, can be undertaken without its full participation.""

They chose Andre because he looks a lot like Hendrix and Andre can actually play the guitar, although I am sure whatever we hear will not be what Andre actually plays on screen. They may be able to use actual Hendrix guitar solos from cover songs pre Are You Experienced. Maybe VinylBandit can enlighten us on that.

Quote :
"The response follows new reports that the long-stalled biopic, tentatively titled All Is By My Side, is moving forward once again after being blocked last summer. The biopic aims to explore Hendrix's life between 1966 and 1967, when he released his landmark debut, Are You Experienced? Pre-production is said to be underway in Ireland, with principal photography expected to start in three weeks in Wicklow and Dublin. John Ridley, who penned the scripts for Three Kings, U-Turn and most recently, Red Tails, is both writing and directing the film.

While Janie Hendrix (Jimi's sister, and the CEO of Experience Hendrix) and the Experience Hendrix board have not ruled out the possibility of a Hendrix biopic altogether, the estate has refused to license music out to several other planned Hendrix biopics in the past, including one by Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Ultimatum, United 93). In its latest statement, the estate reiterates that Experience Hendrix would have to be involved from the get-go with any film that plans to use Hendrix's original music."

Sounds like the Hendrix clan wants to make their own biopic, although if they did it, I bet it would suck minus the original music in lossless 5.1

A 5.1 mix of recordings that were designed for, and sound best in, a mono mix. Got it.

Well the Criterion Collection does not agree: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-Complete-Monterey-Pop-Festival-Blu-ray/5950/

Quote :
"English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1
English: LPCM 2.0 (Original)
English: LPCM 2.0"

Stereo had been around since the mid 1940's, so it is not that strange for them to record a festival of this size in stereo. You should know how easy it is to separate stereo into 5.1.

I agree that vocal dominant recordings like Joplin, do sound best in mono. However for Hendrix I would prefer stereo due to Hendrix vocals, drums, guitar and back up vocals. Also for someone who claims to be so knowledgeable, can you tell me how the panning effect Hendrix was known for would be "better" over mono? That is like saying Whole Lotta Love would be better in mono, lol. Before you begin to argue, please read:

Quote :
"...Both men used new techniques, bringing many microphones to a concert and mixing the performance as it happened—in the manner of a remote broadcast—recording onto stereo tape recorders for release as stereo and mono records. Hamel's first truck grew from simple to more complex in the first seven years. He started with stereo, obtained a three-track machine on which he taped a Barbra Streisand concert, then in 1965 he configured the truck as a complete recording studio. In 1966 he installed a four-track machine, then moved to eight-track, and by 1971 was recording on sixteen tracks.[7]

Many of Heider's recordings became hits or critical successes. One of them is the classic album Live in Concert by Ray Charles, captured in 1964 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.[8] Heider recorded the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967;[9][10][11] its many musical acts and the increasing importance of high quality sound for a concert film signaled a major shift in scale and importance for the remote truck operator. After that, other recording studios assembled their own remote recording trucks and more concerts were saved on multitrack tapes."

They even produced the film in Quadro, lol:

Quote :
"Monterey Pop was shot on 16mm film blown up to 35mm for theatrical release.[1] Director D. A. Pennebaker said he recorded the audio on an 8-track tape recorder borrowed from the band The Beach Boys.[1] The movie's theatrical released used a four-channel soundtrack that included two to three minutes of rudimentary surround sound. Dolby noise reduction was added in 1978 when fresh prints of the film were struck."

Quote :
"The festival was the subject of an acclaimed documentary movie entitled Monterey Pop, by noted documentary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker. Pennebaker's team used recently developed portable 16mm crystal-sync motion picture cameras that stayed synchronized with double-system sound-recording systems. The film stock was Eastman Kodak's recently released "high-speed" 16mm Ektachrome 100 ASA color reversal motion picture stock, without which the nighttime shows would have been virtually impossible to shoot in color. Sound was captured by Wally Heider's mobile studio on state-of-the art eight-track tape, with one track used for the crystal-sync tone, to synchronize it with the film cameras."

Now the funny part is in 1986 when Sony acquired the rights they did away with any surround and went back to stereo.

It is obvious it was recorded in stereo, but it was up to each recording studio to use stereo or mono for vinyl releases. It goes without saying how easy it is to drop from Stereo back to Mono.

However why are we talking about this? I feel like I am in Chit Chat.

This is about this movie, not about everything you disagree with that I say. There are very many recordings that were originally stereo that sound better in lossless 5.1 formats. Most recently ABB @ Filmore 1971 Blu-Ray Audio, although the stereo is very very good, I prefer the added ambient effects of the 5.1 DTS-HD MA track.

Can we get back on the subject of THIS movie FFS.

Edit: One more thing, the reason for mono sounding better on many vinyl records is not due to mono itself, it is due to a flaw in how stereo was created on vinyl.

Original stereo recordings used horizontal and vertical modulation to create stereo, however horizontal (mono) modulation was inherently better than vertical (needed for stereo). Vertical introduced more distortion and large amplitude changes were not as easily produced clearly.

When this vinyl flaw of stereo is bypassed by using the original multitrack recordings, there is no "designed for" mono argument anymore. "Sounds best" is always open to discussion based on the source material and the talked about release. Like I mentioned, I prefer solo artist with dominant lead singing in mono.

This is most easily heard in the Blu-Ray part of Dark Side of The Moon Immersion Set which offers the recording in stereo, quadro and 5.1 DTS-HD MA. I've listened to all of them and it depends on the setup played on which sounds best, but overall most people I've listened to it with prefer 5.1 along with myself. Now Wish You Were Blu-Ray audio is a little more up to the listener's preference.

No, the reason some mono mixes sounds better on any format is because the recordings were mixed specifically for mono, not stereo. For instance, the mono Beatles albums are vastly superior to the stereo versions, because the Beatles spent time working on them. The stereo mixes were an afterthought with no artist supervision.

This obviously varies from album to album, but the mono mixes of the Hendrix tracks with the guitar overdubs featured prominently in the vertical bandwidth are far superior to the hard-panned rudimentary stereo mixing techniques that were being used at the time (and would continue to be used on rock records until the early '80s, as heard on the atrociously-panned Van Halen records).

Quote :
"It goes without saying how easy it is to drop from Stereo back to Mono."

This isn't at all true. The original UK mono mix of Pet Sounds, for instance, is a fold-down of the admittedly-already-terrible US duophonic mix, and the phase is all fucked and it sounds horrible.

Mixing stereo back to mono is not a simple "button-press" process. Mono mixes make space for each instrument's place in the frequency spectrum, something that's not as important when panning things across the soundstage.

Experience Hendrix owns most of the recordings made in Hendrix's pre-Reprise career, so all of those are out. In addition, they're involved with all of the current Jimi Hendrix Experience reissues, so I assume they own all the publishing on his originals, so any song Hendrix actually wrote is out. That leaves a very small number of recordings that actual feature Hendrix.

I wouldn't call withholding recordings and song rights from an unauthorized project "greedy." EH wants to be involved with a biopic from the beginning. They weren't with this one, so they're not offering the music. It's their property, so it's their rules.

Jimi didn't have some cushy family relationship and he didn't even grow up around his real sisters, much less the adopted one... Both his parents were alcoholics and became violent regularly, driving Jimi to hide in his closet as a child. The entire family grew up in poverty and when his parents eventually divorced after years of abuse, his Dad took one of his brothers, Leon and separated Jimi from the entire female side of the family and his younger brother Joseph. His mother and father gave up all of his younger siblings to foster care except Leon, leaving Jimi and his younger brother Leon with his father. When his mother died his father refused to let either Jimi (14 years old) or Leon go to the funeral, instead instructed them to take shots of whiskey and told them that is how men deal with loss. In other words Hendrix had a fucked up family and he barely knew his blood related sisters, much less his damn stepsister Janie, now CEO of Experience Hendrix. Janie Hendrix was rumored to have coerced Al Hendrix (Jimi's Dad) into removing Jimi's brother Leon out of the estate all together and attempted to remove a dozen other family members and friends.

Read this and you'll see why a lot of fans hate her, she only met Jimi a handful of times before he died and now has full ownership since the other Jimi's first cousin who was COO of the estate died in 2012. Keep in mind this court case took place in 2004.

http://www.seattlepi.com/local/article/Judge-splits-decision-on-Hendrix-estate-1155072.php

Quote :
"Garnering international attention, the lawsuit pitted Janie and her (step)cousin Robert Hendrix against Leon Hendrix and a dozen beneficiaries of trusts and companies set up by the late Al Hendrix, Jimi and Leon's father. Simply, Leon wanted back into an inheritance he once had but lost when Al wrote him out of the will six years ago.

Leon, 56, claimed Janie manipulated an infirm Al into denying money for Leon and his children. Ramsdell disagreed. But in the separate legal claim filed by beneficiaries of the estate who said Janie and Robert were unfit to run the funds, Ramsdell agreed.

The judge, however, left the pair in control of the Hendrix companies, such as Experience Hendrix, which are the sources of the trust money.

...The beneficiaries -- other family members named in the will -- had claimed that Janie and Robert illegally refused to disburse money to them while they drew plush salaries, took no-interest loans and bought expensive cars on estate money. In the trial, Janie and Robert defended the spending as "bad advice" from accountants. They said the lack of disbursement was merely acting on Al's will that no money go out until the estate was debt-free.

Ramsdell found the arguments implausible. "The abdication of their duty as trustees is not justified by reference to any directive from Al," he wrote, adding that Al himself gave little indication of such an order."

If Janie and Robert don't sound like a bunch of greedy assholes, but at least Robert knew Jimi and went to concerts with him. However for these two to end up with full control and deny and money to legitimate family members is absurd. The only reason I bet Janie allowed Jimi's first cousin Robert into the picture is because he supported Jimi's father and of course Janie for a certain amount of years. It is hilarious they say accountants advised them to buy expensive cars and take out no interest loans on estate money. Were these accountants on drugs worse than Leon during their advising?

Then you have this part:

Quote :
"Developer Craig Dieffenbach spent nearly $3 million of his own money to fund Leon's challenge. Janie and Robert borrowed money from Sony to pay for their defense."

Now take a look at this and how Sony falls into the picture over the now released ‘People Hell And Angels: http://www.completemusicupdate.com/article/long-disputed-hendrix-recordings-to-be-released/

Quote :
"In removing Janie and Robert as trustees of three of the seven trusts established by Al, Ramsdell ordered that the two pay the legal costs from their own trust accounts. The three trusts represent 17 percent of the estate.

This, too, could push into the "high six figures," said David Osgood, attorney for the successful beneficiaries (actual Hendrix family members). Osgood, while happy about the partial victory, said he remained worried about unanswered questions.

"(Ramsdell, the Judge) recognized that Janie and Robert breached their duties," Osgood said after the verdict was read. "But I would have liked for him to go a bit further."

Specifically, Osgood and other plaintiffs wondered what it means when Janie and Robert continue to run Experience Hendrix and other Hendrix companies that fund the trusts.

"Are they fit to run this company?" Osgood wondered rhetorically. "Our position still is no, they are not fit to run the company."

In researching the book (Room Full of Mirrors), due in August, Cross said he discovered that many of the people who Hendrix was closest to as a child -- particularly on his mother's side of the family -- never received a dime in any of Al's various wills and estate plans through the years.

And unfortunately, said Cross, who attended most of the trial, fights over money made on Hendrix's talent are nothing new. "The sad legacy of Jimi Hendrix is that ever since his first record came out, people have been fighting over the money.""

So basically you have a greedy father who somehow wrote out most people Jimi was close to from receiving a dime. Then when he dies you have a replica of him in Janie and Robert who kept it the same, which is now just Janie. This is why I call her a greedy bitch.

On Jimi's older brother Leon Hendrix (who is still alive):

Quote :
"Hendrix has been clean for over twelve years and lives with his girlfriend who is a doctor in Los Angeles, California.

Hendrix was employed for many years as an expert draftsman by Boeing.

In recent years the father of six and grandfather of four has been attempting to make a living from music and art.[2] The Leon Hendrix Band released one album in 2006, Keeper of the Flame, as well as the earlier Seattle Rain.[3] Hendrix has also toured with The Magic Carpet Ride performing large venue concerts. Hendrix's wish is to keep his brother Jimi's legacy alive by dedicating his songs to Jimi when he performs.

In 2012, Hendrix published an intimate biography of his brother titled Jimi Hendrix: A Brother's Story. It was co-written by Adam Mitchell and published by St. Martin's Press.[4]"

He sure sounds like he is a terrible person and that 2004 decision made perfect sense...

Now you tell me after reading all that you believe non blood related Janie is not in it for the money. It is legally documented in the court case she met her stepbrother Jimi a few times in her life and denied money to actual Hendrix family members.

Quote :
"Leon Hendrix and his attorney Richard Curran said they were disappointed by the decision. Leon, however, said it was good that his stepsister no longer will control all of the Hendrix trusts, even thought he won't benefit from them."

Sorry Leon, she does now..

The most interesting thing I read had to be this:

Quote :
"Hendrix's paternal grandfather, Bertran Philander Ross Hendrix (born 1866), was the result of an extramarital affair between a black slave woman, also named Fanny, and her white overseer, a grain merchant from Urbana, Ohio, and one of the wealthiest white men in the area at that time"

They have to make a full on biopic starting there, I mean COME ON, that whole story is screaming movie gold mine. The reason Janie won't do it is because she would either have to admit to being a greedy whore of a stepsister or she would alter herself out of the story and leave out the whole legal battle, which would be my assumption since it happened in 2004. Hell end the thing right at or right before the death of Jimi.

You can call some of this speculation, but most of it is documented in the court case and had to be legally proven for the decision to be made. Even after the judge made his decision he said both Janie and Robert had breached their responsibilities financially. So even the Judge is saying they were doing something wrong before they were even given full control. My question is how was the Hendrix estate only worth $80 million in 2004??? Well we will just have to wait for the wicked step-sister to die and see where it goes after that, but she is only 51 or 52... I bet Janie fought like hell over the release of ‘People Hell And Angels. Although without that money from Sony in 2004 she would never be in the position she is now.

So far it seems like the critics and audience enjoy the movie, for what it was allowed to be:

http://www.dailycal.org/2014/10/13/jimi-side/

Quote :
"For a musical icon as consistently deified in the classic-rock canon as Jimi Hendrix, it would be far too reductive to shoehorn him into the overripe “instant rock star” tropes that have riddled the vast majority of pop-culture films. Much like the Hendrix depicted by Andre Benjamin — Outkast’s Andre 3000 — “JIMI: All is By My Side” offers a meekly subversive contextualization on the standard classic rock biopic, and while it might not revolutionize the form, it is ambitious in its own right for not succumbing to the genre’s multitude of pitfalls."

I am really looking forward to being able to watch this, I hope they will offer a limited stream maybe on Amazon or something to allow us to watch it outside of large cities and relevant locations like ATL. One thing I do not understand, why the hell was the initial release in Russia on May 8th? Seriously?? One of the most famous guitar players of all time born in Seattle and Ridley shows it to the Russians first?? I mean what in the fuck?

I've watched the movie and I have one major problem with it and that is the made up part of him beating his girl friend Kathy Etchingham with a telephone in a club. Kathy Etchingham even went on record saying the scene was entirely made up for the movie. Why in the fuck would they include that in the movie?

Quote :
"The real Kathy Etchingham, who dated Hendrix between 1966 and 1969, says that the scene that depicts Hendrix (André Benjamin) beating up her character with a telephone is "completely made up." In fact, Ms. Etchingham was so disturbed by the movie depicting their relationship as an abusive one, she has considered taking legal action against the filmmakers. "If I don't, it'll just get repeated and repeated and it'll become the truth."

Kathy, whose full name is Kathleen Mary Etchingham, says that screenwriter and director John Ridley never consulted her for the movie. She told the Daily Mail Online that she had even contacted Ridley and offered to help at no cost, but never heard back. Kathy further addressed the Jimi: All Is by My Side true story by saying that her relationship with Jimi Hendrix wasn't the only thing that the movie got wrong."

(this link would be considered a spoiler for most movies, but if you know the history of Hendrix it should all be old news aside from the few things like I put in above)

Other than that the movie is really well done and they couldn't have done much better without getting the bitch Janie Hendrix to sign on to the movie. If Janie had signed on then none of this beating of Etchingham would have been added for dramatic effect. The sad part is people will now probably assume that shit is true and believe Hendrix beat up some white chick in a club.

It was fucking hilarious when he came on stage with Clapton, that shit was awesome. By the way, that is Andre singing during the few singing parts of the movie and Waddy Wachtel is who is playing the main riffs. Overall Andre did better than I expected him to do, from the sound of his voice to the guitar antics Hendrix was famous for. Most people however can't see this movie for what it is (based on view reviews I've read) and that is a brief glimpse in the life of Hendrix, this is not Ray or Get on Up. This is 2 years of Hendrix put into a movie and it is mostly accurate. I would need to watch it again before really saying what I think of it because when I saw him beat up Etchingham with a phone I kind of lost the immersion that Ridley had achieved up to that point. At this point I would basically agree with Rotten Tomatoes saying a ~7/10 and I'd buy it on Blu-Ray when it is available.

Well Prince is a hell of a guitarist, but better than Hendrix in terms of raw talent? I don't agree there. You have to keep in mind how little Hendrix had to play in comparison to hone his skills. It is like comparing him with Jimmy Page, Buddy Guy or B.B. King who have all had well over 50 years to play.

saying Prince is better than Jimi is like saying Patrick Ewing is better than Kareem

Jimi and Prince are both virtuosos. Jimi was more innovative, Prince has more natural talent. They're different, and that's okay. I prefer Prince.

What? Page was the #1 working guitarist in England by the age of 21. You of all people should know that.

I'm not sure how Page playing as a session guitarist has anything to do with what I said and he quit doing it because of how shitty the music was.

Quote :
"My session work was invaluable. At one point I was playing at least three sessions a day, six days a week! And I rarely ever knew in advance what I was going to be playing. But I learned things even on my worst sessions – and believe me, I played on some horrendous things. I finally called it quits after I started getting calls to do Muzak. I decided I couldn't live that life any more; it was getting too silly. I guess it was destiny that a week after I quit doing sessions Paul Samwell-Smith left the Yardbirds and I was able to take his place. But being a session musician was good fun in the beginning – the studio discipline was great. They'd just count the song off and you couldn't make any mistakes."

Not to mention Page started playing when he was only 12 (this is before everyone and their mother had guitars post The Beatles, Zeppelin, The Who, Cream, etc etc) and Hendrix only had 12 years with an actual guitar total. Hendrix had never even been in a recording studio until the age of 22 (5 years before he died). So I stand by what I said, you can't compare very many guitarist to Hendrix so directly. Hendrix created a sound that nobody up to that point in time had ever even heard before and he puts it in the best wording himself that is included in this movie, "I want people to hear music how I see it". Look at what happened when he tried to jam with Cream, Clapton just loved him!

Schecter Guitars is what Prince is playing by the way, which is what yours truly plays (Tempest Custom).

Although I rarely agree with many "top guitarist" lists, this one is one of the "best". Prince comes in at 14th with Hendrix at 1st. However I have so many problems with top anything lists, as does probably anyone who enjoys almost every style of music.

Prince's Cloud guitars were custom made by a Minneapolis luthier in the '80s.

The Schecter Cloud guitars were copies made for sale through the Prince Fan Club.

Prince's most famous single guitar is a Telecaster copy made by Hohner.

Lately he's been playing Vox HDC77's.
