This. 13 was a real disappointment. The entire game felt like it was on rails - nothing like the earlier games where it felts like you could pretty much go anywhere or do anything.

So this is a road trip buddy comedy where you occasionally pull over and fight medieval knights with assault rifles and giant buffalo?

So - I noticed it's getting generally favorable reviews so I went ahead and pulled the trigger on a copy for myself.

Will be binging this weekend, much to the ire of my girlfriend I'm sure!

I don't understand how people with kids have time to play video games - I'm not denigrating people who play at all - I just wish I had time to, but I just can't get the kid to bed early enough to have any time to sink into games.

I'd love to get back into FF. I haven't seriously followed the series since 7 on the original PS.

I bought a copy, but realistically it will probably only get a few hours of play before it and my PS4 continue to gather dust.

And it isn't for lack of trying either. I tried Fallout 3, couldn't get into it. I tried the latest Dragon Age, couldn't get into it. I almost finished Assassin's Creed 3. Almost.

Red Dead 2...now that's a game that will probably get me...back in the game.

I have an open trade in for amazon for my launch day ps4 for $143. It's collected dust since May. But then Watch Dogs 2 and FF XV came out and idk if I should buy either or both. Also TLOUII announcement but in that respect I think I'd rather get out from ps4 and then buy PS4 Pro bundle when that comes out in 2 years.

I'm digging it so far. Still in the early chapters just doing sidequests mostly.

Voice acting is pretty good, and they're leaning hard into this making your own family/brotherhood trope. However, it seems to work so far.

Lots of systems to manage, including spellcasting which out there and I'm still getting used to.

Combat is a lot more intense than I'm used to, more along the lines of Witcher than FF. It's really cool as you get the hang of it though, the warp mechanic is an interesting introduction.

All-in-all I already like this more than any of the others (non-MMO) I've played since FF10.

This game has pleasantly surprised me. I'm about 20 hours in. The world is fun to explore and the characters aren't terrible (like FF 13). The battle system is deep enough so I still haven't learned how to fight very well. Def feels like a JRPG Witcher and that's a good thing. I'm still gonna be pissed when the story falls into incoherence.

I'm watching this crap Kingsglaive movie to bone up on the story. This CGI stuff was kinda cool for a minute but spending more than 5 mins in uncanny valley gets old.

Didn't like this game. The plot made no goddamn sense. Major characters died off-screen without much explanation. The few on-screen deaths landed with a thud because I barely knew or cared about them. The battle system sucked, you could equip the right weapon and hold the attack button for most fights. The few tough fights were more a matter of having enough healing items than using any sort of strategy. Voice acting was decent, writing less so. Pretty much done with this series, which is depressing since it was one of my favorites in the SNES/PS1 days

I don't really agree with that. I don't want to get into spoiler territory, but I will say that while there were many issues with pacing and how the story revealed itself, the plot is pretty straightforward in the end.

I have no idea who you're even talking about. The only arguably major character who dies off-screen is Regis, Noctis's father, but that's revealed to Noct in the story well enough. And if you really care to see it happen, it's in Kingsglaive.

Who else even dies off-screen? I guess Jared, Talcott's grandfather? He's not even close to being a major character.

Quote :
"The few on-screen deaths landed with a thud because I barely knew or cared about them."

There are only, like...three on-screen deaths of characters who have anything to do with the plot. Two of them are quite major, and the story provides plenty of context for them. Now, admittedly, the game alone might not be enough to make you care. Watching Kingsglaive helps with that.

Quote :
"The battle system sucked, you could equip the right weapon and hold the attack button for most fights."

When you say "most fights," do you mean "the bare minimum of battles required to finish the story"? Because there is a wealth of variety in the battles among hunts, the maze dungeons, and all the side quests, and many of them require a change in tactics to succeed. I guarantee you didn't finish the Costlemark Tower maze dungeon just holding down the Attack button. Those Menace Beneath... quests probably have more battles than the story does!

Quote :

It is true that you can brute force your way through most battles by healing yourself until you wear the enemy down, but I don't see that as a mark against the game at all. That's true of most RPGs. Would you rather have battles so difficult you couldn't advance at all? Most battles end when you use Summon, too.

I think the combat system in this game is very, very good. There are several styles supported and lots of customizability. I went through the story focusing on swords and magic, did many hours with daggers and phasing after that, have just started focusing on linked strikes as my primary damage output, and I've hardly dipped my toe into many things: machinery, Armiger attacks, the Royal Arms, etc. I've put in 150 hours.

So did you not play FFX, X-2, XII...? That's the most recent 15 years of the series! I'm not even a Final Fantasy head, and I've played X and XII at least.

I really don't understand the experience you've had with XV.

So turn off Wait Mode, use only starting equipment, and don't use items. Make the challenge if it's too easy for you. I don't get it. You have all the tools you want at your disposal to tailor the challenge of the combat. And that's true of, like, every single game with any kind of combat. Restart the game if you take a point of damage.

Let me ask you this another way: What concrete, specific changes to the combat system would create the kind of challenge you want?

Nah, there are some major gaps in the story. (spoilers, select to read) I still only have a vague ideas of what significance of The Oracle and The Prophecy. It's not clear why the main villain was denied the throne (I had to learn that one from a wiki article) or why Noct had to hibernate for 10 years. That Geitania (how whatever you say it) woman seemed to be some sort of goddess but how/why she shows up is never explained.

Quote :
"I have no idea who you're even talking about. The only arguably major character who dies off-screen is Regis, Noctis's father, but that's revealed to Noct in the story well enough."

I was referring to (spoilers)Ravus and The Emperor. I kept expecting to hear more about them but they're off-screen almost the entire time until I suddenly hear they're dead in Chapter 13. Also one character gets blinded off-screen, which seemed like a missed opportunity (actually it sounds like it'll be covered in DLC)

And that's a huge problem. It doesn't take a 90 minute movie to make me care about a character, just throw in a few scenes to establish their roles and relationships. That wasn't necessary for Regis (he's a King and Noct's dad, pretty straightforward), but (spoilers) Lunafreya needed a lot more explanation. As it is I watched Ardyn kill her and basically shrugged. Also her and Noct are engaged and in love even though they haven't seen each other in twelve years, when they were kids? Ok.

Quote :

Not exactly. My main way of playing RPGs is to play a bit of the main story, do a few sidequests, play some more of the story, do a few more sidequests, repeat. So I did a decent number of hunts and the like, but didn't try to do every single one before moving on to the next part.

Quote :
"Would you rather have battles so difficult you couldn't advance at all?"

Ideally most battles would be like they are in other FFs: You can eek out a win if you've fought enough battles to gain the necessary XP and skills while progressing through the main story. Nearly every FF has bosses balanced so that you can take them down without having to grind too much. In this one the few tough battles I fought were a matter of having enough Elixirs and Hi-Potions to keep my team alive. The best way to deal with the bosses' heavy-hitting attacks was to use skill attacks because everyone is invincible while they're winding up. Also in other FF games, items aren't instantaneous. You have to give up a turn for that character to use them, meaning any turn spent healing with items is a turn you're not attacking. In this one items are used nearly instantly and you give up nothing by using them as the enemies don't seem to hurt your party while it happens.

To get an idea of what I consider ideal, a few weeks before XV I was fighting Seymour Flux in FFX HD. This is one of the hardest bosses in the game as he can hit for massive physical damage and inflict zombie status on your party, followed by Full-life for an instant-kill. Fortunately my characters were just strong enough that I made it through using a combination of status buffs, holy waters, and attacks to take him down. Also, despite some horrible voice acting/writing, I have a good idea of the motivations of my party members. They did a great job of explaining the role of summoners, the world of Spira, and the followers of Yevon. No separate movies/anime required.

Quote :

I played FFX, X-2, XII, and XIII. Liked all of them except X-2 and XIII. Skipped XIII-2 and Lightning Returns.

I'd like to get into the spoilers, but I can't format my text to hide them since I don't have a premium subscription, and nobody ever bothered to implement a [spoiler] tag.

But like to speak to your FFX example of combat, even Seymour is cheesed with grinding and summons. I don't get how you draw a line through challenging, just hold Attack, and just use items. At some point, the scale tips.

THIS GAME HAS MAJOR ISSUES. The strange thing about is that I actually liked Chapter 13 which is now notorious among people who have played the game. I knew I was in for a ride so I decided I was going to slog through the whole thing in one sitting. I think I started at 11:30pm and didn't finish until 2:30am. Holy fuck, did it just keep going on. I'm not sure any game made me feel despair like that. Maybe not even Dark Souls. Mission accomplished.

SPOILERS

My main issue with the game is that Noctis never meets up with Lady Lunafreya. It's like they killed her just so they wouldn't have to actually write more story.

Chapter 13 is a mess. This is when multiple characters die off screen. Their motivations for changing sides are not explained....who the fuck knows. FUCK DLC

There is a reveal for Prompto that is herp derp diddy fucking what??? I still don't know what a fucking MT is outside of Magi-Tek because the story doesn't emphasize it. I'm not reading notes.

No backstories for Gladio or Ignis? Why is Ignis so smart and cool? He's my favorite character because I'm smart and I like to cook but I'm not as good as Ignis. Prompto is an MT? What the fuck is an MT???!!

The battle system is just OK. You just pummel potions and stuff for hard fights. I think if they could take items out of the game it could be a legit system.

Backstory for each main character abounds in the web series Brotherhood Final Fantasy XV, which you can watch in its entirety on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLbhHt7tfNMCAhpjJlSh3Rm7KSdcmuzM4m

It's five episodes, about 15 minutes each. You should watch it, and don't bother bitching about how it should've been in the game, because it really doesn't matter. It's online, it's free.

I'll never understand the complaint "you can just use potions." Yes, you can just use potions. When you fuck up. Because you aren't learning. Would you prefer dying every time you fuck up because you didn't learn? When you learn how to fight and pay attention to enemies' differences, you won't be using potions. You rely on potions to grind your way through a fight then complain that the battle system is "just OK." You wouldn't know, because you aren't bothering with the system! You just fucking suck at it.

Wow. It's been what, over 30 years since that first FF, and they still have mega elixirs? Sounds like this might be one for me. I liked the simple FF's. When it got to the point to where you needed to know how to solve diff equations to make it through a battle, I kinda zoned out.

Yeah, it's definitely more action-oriented than, like, FFXII. One thing I like in particular is that your party members will actually call out things during the battle, e.g. "Prompto's been turned into a frog!"

Fanboy much?

Let's face it. I fought through Costlecock tower which was a shitty dungeon by the way with ugly dark textures. No color or anything interesting to look at. Most dungeons were like that. At my level I HAD to use a bunch of potions to fight 3 giant armors things and a snake thing. It breaks up the flow of combat. If they wanted a big boy action system they could have limited the need to heal. They are moving more and more toward an action system like Devil May Cry. You can use a few items to heal in DMC but you are penalized for it in the score. They could have penalized the EXP you gain if you use potions or given Noctis healing spells. He had too much MP anyway.

And yes, the backstories should have been in the game. The movie was shitty so I expect the same out of the youtube videos. It's obvious they are stretching the content as far and thin as they can. There will probably be DLC for when Gladio disappears, when Ignis goes blind and when Prompto flees because he's a fucking MT. It's awful and should be called out. I'm wondering how many episodes they are going to stretch this FFVII remake into. Square has been a shit company for a very long time now and at this point I regret buying the game.

I have mostly zoned out of the JRPG world. The last I checked, it sounded like the Final Fantasy series was going after the mainstream and just doing what they could for mass marketing appeal. Dragon Quest still appeared to be a true JRPG with meat on the bones, though. I wonder if that is still the case, or if they even bother to localize DQ beyond Japan.

Every time I think about getting a new console to relive the JRPG fix, I just flake and remember all of the SNES era RPGs I still haven't played. Simpler times with rose-tinted glasses, I suppose.

I've heard very positive things about the Dragon Quest remakes (and DQ IX) on Nintendo DS and 3DS. Probably worth your time if you want that old-school JRPG feel.

Costlemark has a huge central screw as a staircase, a sliding block puzzle, and a crazy hi-tech elevator that leads down to the a crazy hi-tech boss chamber. How is that shit not interesting? That dungeon isn't like any of the others, unless you're the kind of cocksucker who says it's a maze that has rooms and enemies in it, so it's basically the same thing, in which case holy shit shut the fuck up

So you either fucking suck or you went into a fight you weren't prepared for because you fucking suck. There is little need to heal unless you are improperly equipped or make errors in combat.

Did you bother using Ignis's Regroup technique? That should more than cover just about any need to heal that you might have. You should be using techniques in combat anyway, so that shouldn't break up the flow unless you're sitting there wondering what techniques are, which you probably are because you fucking suck.

Regroup basically is a healing spell. But "he had too much MP anyway," that's how I know you fucking suck. If you are phasing to avoid attacks, using aerial combos, and using Warp, you will not be complaining about having too much MP unless you've stacked accessories to increase your max MP.

But no, you aren't phasing, you're soaking up hits and having to use potions to heal in combat because you fucking suck.

Holy shit I hate this new hunt for Melusine.

It takes place in the shallows of the Vesperpool against a large enemy. The trees constantly get in the way. It's hard to see her attacks, which include petrifying projectiles, a two-way sweeping poison attack, a near-instakill sweeping breath attack, something that inflicts confusion, and one of those goddamn singularity attacks.

It's a level 99 hunt, and she has a fuckton of HP. I think the intent is for her to be a monster you learn how to use Cross Chain attacks on, but it's very difficult to set her up for them. I think she has two attacks you can block & parry, a big-ass jump attack and something I've never actually seen because of the fucking camera and fucking trees.

That means you can't put her in Vulnerable reliably, which means you don't get many opportunities to start a Cross Chain combo. When she is vulnerable, I don't think Cross Chain works as long as even one ally is in Danger mode.

I've fought her twice now without beating her. While I haven't died, she's disappeared at dawn, because she's an enemy who only comes out at night. It's such a fucking waste of time. The fucking game doesn't bother actually providing a comprehensible tutorial for Cross Chain, so the first fight consisted of me dicking around a lot. The second consisted of me knowing what I was doing and just not being in place to block her because the camera fucked my movement up so bad.

I started up a third attempt figuring that the game expects you to attack her with your nifty new Magitek Exosuits only to find that the fucking things take twenty hours to recharge in real time.

It's not fuckin' worth it. It's 10,000 XP and what, a Magitek Suit? A fuckin' V1, not even the good one?

Oh yeah, and I forgot that one of her attacks is to catch you out of a Warp Strike and slap you down to 1 HP.

Update: She dropped a Death Penalty for me. The quest reward was a shitty Magitek Suit, though.

I just got around to playing this game (PC) and really like it overall. I'm at 150 hours or so. I thought the bro-centric thing was going to be really dumb, but it's actually really well done. I didn't care for it one bit during the game, but the photos feature was really nice at the end. I give it an 8 out of 10 as far as gameplay/entertainment. I give the story like a.. 3 out of 10.

I'll stick to my cons:

I have a general feeling that the story was really short and missing a lot of detail as ShinAntonio mentioned. I felt nothing for Lunafreya. I'm all about Sarah from the alien sidequest That could be on me though because I was big into hunting which probably killed some sense of story continuity. Looking back, I'm like "how did I get on the quest to find all the Royal arms again?" and "Wait, why did I go around looking for the Gods again?"

The camera and hit registration really sucks for big bosses. It made it REALLY annoying to build and pull off Armiger attacks. The tutorial barely helped me with timing that shit. I figured it out on my own, though I'm still only about 50% successful.

Those combined with the insta-kill strikes from the higher-level enemies gets annoying AF. God damn Omega and the swamp snake girl had it down pat. I probably downed about 50 potions and 30 phoenix downs for those two. It was a good thing I had somewhat learned to time the Armiger by then, so I could actually do some damage assuming I could see Noctis at the time. I never bothered equipping Regroup, so I'll definitely have to check that out. I didn't know Armiger when I killed that stupidass Adamantoise using 99% regular attacks LOL. Special shoutout to the samurai daemons and tiger cheetahs.

It was frustrating learning how to fast travel by car. There are very certain ways you have to select destinations, and it wasn't evident in the first 20+ hours. It was smooth sailing after I got the gist of it. BTW the 4x4 and jet did nothing for me. Give me the plain jane Regalia

I didn't use any magic/elemancy. I didn't like the flask system at all. BUT I generally don't use magic in games, so no biggie for me.

The world map sucks so bad. I don't play enough games to know of how best to map an expansive modern-day game, but I didn't like it. Hey, something is only 3 miles away? I can chocobo my ass there for fun. 2 miles later... nope, it's surrounded by sheer rock and inaccessible shrubs. Teleport back to car...

No way to alphabetize inventory The item sorting is all sorts of jacked up as well.

I haven't downloaded the side character DLC's and I'm not sure I'm ready to delve into entirely new fighting systems rn. That little bit I got at the end of the game had me going WTF.

Right now, I'm going through the first of my "Menace" dungeons.

I don't think the DLC is really worth it. I played the ones for Prompto, Ignis, and Gladiolus, but there was nothing particularly fun or interesting about them. I wound up skipping Episode Ardyn completely.

Game still sucks ass.

FFVII Remake fixed it all. Beat that on hard mode. Guess I suck.

I don't know if you sucked at that, but you sure must have sucked at XV. It's apples and oranges to VII Remake in any case.
